Thats a dangerous "standard" setting to say the least.

You believe wrong. It backs up as a pic is taken. So if you take a pic, it's backed up almost immediately. If you delete from your phone, it's still on iCloud unless deleted there also.

Best I can tell, what's happening here is that people don't realise that they have "cloud photo backup" turned on, so all their photos are being backed up to iCloud pretty much as soon as they take them. . Or they know it's on but don't appreciate the consequences. Google has a similar facility on their Android OS too, and I have one of those, but I actually read the message, said "heck, no", and then went in to Settings and double-checked that it was indeed off.

People taking pictures of themselves naked is a fairly common thing and people are entitled to a degree of privacy, even famous people. If a famous person is sending naked pictures of themselves to someone, that's their business and no one else's. I don't think they really deserve to be humiliated over it, especially since that seems to be the primary goal of this kind of crap. Someone being famous doesn't really give any right to some asshole on 4chan or Reddit or whatever to violate their privacy.

I'm glad the guy has been identified. Too many people think they're safe behind a computer screen, not to mention the fact that they have way too much time on their hands to go around trying to catch celebrities out. Get a life.
