One of the most famous nicks I suppose was Salvatore Lucky Luciano. I visited his Mausoleum in St Johns NY, he's part of the dead celeb tour. His birth surname Lucania is over the door, apparently he renamed himself Luciano because his father disowned him for being involved with the Mafia.
