Today the plan called for 14 miles easy.

The weather in Conn today was a bit all over the place, lovely sunshine followed by biblical downpours. Was getting a bit of cabin fever in the house today, so we decided to take a drive to Gorteen Bay in Roundstone, there is an absolutely beautiful sandy beach there, and although the legs had almost no stiffness in them this morning I thought they'd benefit from a dip in the Atlantic.

Another downpour as I was putting on the togs but sure I was getting wet anyway. Had a quick dip followed by a late lunch in Roundstone.

Set off from the house around tea time in glorious sunshine, the first half mile was hell but after that I was surprised how comfortable it got. Really happy with how easy I was finding it to bash out 7.30 miles with relative ease. A hill at mile 12 was the first time I felt a bit of a pinch and the last two miles were up hill.

Felt like a very goods weeks training but this running lark is like being on a Boetius Wheel and next week I'll probably be on here crying on the collective shoulder!

    Ended up doing 15 miles, splits;

    8.22
    7.36
    7.37
    7.17
    7.23
    7.26
    7.30
    7.23
    7.24
    7.25
    7.29
    7.37
    7.16
    7.57
    8.02

    Ha Ha Tang,

I've given up trying to keep within an asses roar of Kielyunusual2 (aka Yaboya).

This was more like, Jesus my teenage Coach does really know his ****, and it all seems to be coming together nicely :)

I was gonna try and knock out my first ever sub 6 min mile mid way through but that would be showboating on an FBOT type scale (and I'd have ended up in a mucky heap!)

15th day straight running, 44 years 49 and a half weeks to go!

Woke up this morning tired and stiff, after the "over exuberance" of my "easy" run yesterday. You'd think at my age I'd listen to what I'm told!

Plan today called for a 3 mile easy run but I had again to juggle this weeks sessions as I'm going to London again tomorrow.

am: did 4 miles recovery at around 9.30 pace. Had very little love for this and was just wishing for it to be over.

pm: headed to the loop at the back of Barna golf club after work for a planned 7 miles with strides. Took in the new wind farm that is adjacent to the loop. Legs still moaning and groaning so called it a day after 6.2 miles and decided that the body wouldn't handle the strides.

Had to head in towards Salthill after the session and as I passed Blackrock swimming tower, it looked like vegetable soup with the amount of heads bobbing up and down in the high tide waves.

Pulled over a bit further down the prom and got straight in. Absolutely invigorating and I stayed in for ages. Might try and make this a bit more of a habit and it seems to work for Marthastew (although swimming in Dublin might justify a visit to a toxicologist)

    All in 10.2 miles.

I was running out by the prom today. The whole way out and back I was really tempted to go for a dip. It looked lovely out there...

It's not exactly flat up by Barna GC. Not surprised you skipped the strides.

Super run on Sunday btw after your heroic performance in the Duck Waddling Championships on Sat.

    Tnx Ferris,

Probably wasn't the smartest thing to do but can't change that now.

Couple of nasty hills around that area all right.

I'm still getting comments today about my running form, I was told this morning that my running style was made for going around sharp bends :)

I must have just missed you this evening too, ran by the windfarm this evening.

Can you still run through the bog roads in the farm? I ran through it a few years ago just before work started.

    Hey MM,

They have two compacted road sections and the rest is grassy bogland, only did a short section on the grass myself to get over to the other road section, so it's not that far, only a short loop and then back out onto the road. I'm sure a trail expert like you would ferret out a decent route though.

After the swim in Galway Bay yesterday and an Epsom salt bath last night the legs felt a bit better today.

Heading over to London so had to get today's planned 7 miles steady, done early.

Picked a local hilly route and set off, first mile was very hard and finished it in 8.21!

Managed to work myself into the session and was happy enough to get it done.

    7 miles @ 7.41

Looking forward to a recovery day tomorrow :)

what does a recovery day look like for tbl these days?

In a hotel beside Gatwicks North terminal, and the roads outside are a spaghetti junction so unfortunately today's recovery was a torturous hot and sweaty 3 miles on the hotel threadmill.

Much preferred last weeks recovery, gentle jog, swim, steam bath, jacuzzi and curry cheese chips :)

I'm gonna be in the same hotel 4 days next week, on the off chance, would anyone know of a decent running route reasonably close to the airport?

3 miles in just under 30 mins.

Very busy over the last couple of days and only got a couple of hours keep over the last two nights.

One would think at my age I'd be starting to get a bit of sense and mellow, but I'm getting crankier, more impatient, grumpier and more competitive!

The latest manifestation of this was late last night after arriving at the airport, I always make a beeline to get to passport control quick before it gets thronged and started walking briskly. Some lad in a suit speed walks by me, I pick it up to match his pace, quick glance from him and he ups it again. I'd an overnight bag and he had only a laptop case but feck this, I pulled ahead of him again. He jumps on the travelator and I get the duck waddle in full flow and round the corner to passport control a fraction in front of him. The balls of sweat were rolling off me and I was surprised I made it through without a second glance from the Guard.

Picked the wrong line though as the suit got through before me and gave me the facial expression equivalent of the finger as he passed me :)

Anyway today's plan called for another mystery session with Coach.

Wasn't looking forward to this at all as was wrecked tired and poor diet for the last few days had me feeling like crap.

Met up at Tymon and Coach changed the session when I told him I was feeling a bit crap. Told me we'd be doing mile reps at around HM pace off 60-75 sec recovery. Did our warm up and started. Deliberately left the watch behind as I've found it great to just let someone else dictate the pace. First mile was pretty tough and I wasn't comfortable, second and third reps were getting easier. The 4th had me in a bit of a hoop as it was mainly on the slight incline.

I thought we'd be doing 5 reps but it was to be 6, wasn't sure I'd manage it at that stage TBH. Don't remember much about the 5th one but sweet Jesus the 6th one really took it out of me. I was hanging onto coach for dear life who was shouting words of encouragement. Also got a laugh when was instructed to stay behind and use him as a wind breaker. I'd have gotten more cover from a cocktail sausage stick :)

Very happy with the session, especially as I felt I'd very little in the tank at the start.

Finished with a nice chat and cool down jog.

    Splits:

    6.34
    6.31
    6.28
    6.27
    6.27
    6.11

    This had me in stitches.

That suit fella is a marked man. Elbows out next time.

Today planned for 3m easy am, & 7m easy pm.

Decided to switch the order this morning when I started and ended up doing 8 miles in the sun @ 8.01.

By evening time I was glad I'd done the longer part earlier as I was completely wiped, took a big effort to get out at all and decided to mix it up for a bit of variation, took in some trail, couple of laps of the local GAA pitch and some road. Started very slow but slowly got into it.

    4m @ 8.21

Total for the day 12 miles.

Hope I perk up or I'll have to borrow FBOT's new toy!

    20th straight day running.

Plan today called for 7m easy.

Decided to get this out of the way early this morning coz although the body was willing the head would have preferred to have watched the entire boxed set of Glenroe episodes 1983-2001 :)

Was very windy out there but got around comfortably enough. 7 miles @ 8.01

Happy with the way the body is responding to the increased mileage and consecutive days running.

    Plan today called for an 18 mile progression run: 6 @ 8min, 6 @ 7.30, 6 @ 7.00.

Was fairly apprehensive about this as I haven't done one in a fair while.

Lovely sunny day but extremely windy with occasional strong gusts.

Managed the 8's and 7.30's handy enough and thought I'd manage the 7's ok. A combination of inclines and cross winds made this section very hard. After .4 of a mile on the second last mile, I was doing 7.50 pace (and almost gave up and stopped) and the last 2.5 miles were into very strong headwinds. The thought of doing another 20 miles at that pace is daunting but there again I thought the same at this stage of the previous training cycle. Had to work hard on the last mile to maintain the average.

    Glad that's done!

    18 miles average 7.29.

    Splits:

    8.21
    7.54
    8.06
    7.53
    8.00
    7.53
    7.29
    7.25
    7.26
    7.29
    7.31
    7.17
    6.52
    7.02

Plan called for the Nursing Home special again, 3 miles at recovery pace.

I usually add a mile or two to these runs but was very stiff all day, so shuffled the three miles off at 9.32 pace.

Would have probably taken a rest day but it's the 23rd straight day running and I've got that world record in my sights, only 44 years and 49 weeks to go :)

Gonna ask the nurse for an Epsom salt bath tonight and hopefully the legs will loosen up as I've the dreaded track session to look forward to tomorrow!

Is the running streak by accident or coaches design?

Hey Bulmers nice run yesterday. Mainly coaches design, (think I ran with Ferris on a planned rest day, my ears could have done with a rest after that :) ) trying to up the mileage now to get used to running on tired legs. The consecutive days running thing is only a bit of a physical illusion though, as those recovery runs are really really easy. (I actually find them better for me than a day off altogether, that might change soon!!)

    Tnx Murph,

Winds a bitch (both internal & external), and with my body mass I really struggle running into a stiff headwind! Wouldn't have kept that pace up for much longer though. You're motoring nicely at the moment.
