    Had a serious look at this option there and it's tempting but don't think I'll go for it. You're basically tearing up the rest of the team for a short term punt as I don't think 32.5m tied up in the front three will work long term at this stage of the season. If Sturridge had better fixtures GW1-3 I'd probably do it.

    Worried about Sturridge v Southampton but think on fixtures Costa has to be in for the first few weeks at least.

    Backed away from the idea myself.

    United are having a tough time trying to sign a centre back. I think their opening fixtures are too kind to not start with De Gea, but if they don't bolster their defense before the end of the transfer window, I'd definitely be worrying about a leaky and inexperienced defense.

    Jones, Evans and Smalling are many things but in expeiencd they are not. They will be fine against most teams.

    While not entirely unhappy with it, there's a number of things wrecking my head!!!

    Defense is a bit of a nightmare(with the budget allocated) - i'm basically looking at £23.5M to splash on 5 def's, and with my insistence on having one from Chelsea, it's proving quite troublesome. Luis i rate highly, but let's be honest none of us know for certain will he start gw1! Tomorrow's friendly may give us a better clue on the answer to that...

    I'm happy to go with Hutton as my £4M def, couple of nice fixtures gw2-3, and won't be needed that often anyway. After that we have my 3X £4.5 def's. QPR good opening home fixtures so went for Ferdinand(funds being no issue would have chosen Caulker). Chambers in with a good chance of clean sheet gw1 and the almost inevitable price rises should that happen... he may indeed be good for gw1-3 appearances actually, when you consider the crucial champs league qualifiers sandwiched in between (i'd expect Kos-Mert to be starting those games for their experience). Lastly i chose Yoshida. He's £4.5M and currently nailed-on for Southampton, who after gw1 have a very nice run, especially at home. There is, i accept, the risk that Southampton buy another cb before the Sep 1 deadline and i'm left with a non-player...

    i've heard Naughton mentioned in Walker's absence, have to say that one's tempting at £4.5M, although Spurs' defense has been very patched-up pre season(i'm not sure how they'll actually fair once the real business is under way!), Mariappa very tempting also but yet another one we just don't know will he start!! Anyway any help/advice would be welcome as defense is the one area i'm struggling with the most at present :o:o:o

    Midfield:Young i'm prepared to take a punt on early on. His form simply can't be ignored, coupled with United's opening fixtures and his price-tag... could do well under the new bonus points system also. Ramsey i'm 100% happy with. Isgrove as my cheap emergency mid happy with also. Coutinho i have currently but i'm not looking very long-term on that one. Unsure on Lamela/Eriksen, and think Liverpool could knock a few past Saints so have him in there for now. Also may be shifted to accomodate one of a number of alternative midfield-striker combinations(more about that in a bit). Navas at £7.5M a bit risky but seems to be in favor as the only City mid with real pace. Has shown good pre-season form also like Young, and could benefit from the new bp system. Another option to shift(like Coutinho) if i want to go with a different combo...

    My front 3 i'm fairly happy with as you might imagine! (gives me great captaincy options)

    The midfield-forward combination options i mentioned previously:

    Navas + Costa(currently selected) VS Hazard + Jovetic

    Coutinho + Costa(currently selected) VS Hazard + Giroud

    Likwise Rooney could be taken out for Costa (but given United's opening run i'm unlikely to do that)

    Anyway options(and concerns:pac::pac:) aplenty. Feedback welcome!

    A particularly long-winded post, but hopefully some (fellow)tortured-minds in advance of gw1 might appreciate it :)

    its good to see something different and I think the big front 3 option could work. I just think there are too many risks in the rest of your selections and its quite possible you could struggle to field eleven in the first couple of weeks. Players I think are risks are Navas( not a regular starter), Yoshida( Southampton linked with a CB) Ferdinand( has been a few seasons since he has managed to play week in week out) Isgrove( dont know much about him) Young( a good pre season but still not guaranteed) Chambers( will probably only play the first couple) Luis( slight chance of him not starting). The above is all worst case scenario but honestly Id see you wildcarding within a few weeks if you start with the above team. Id go with 3 of the above options and replace 4 of the above with safer picks.

    Too many people pick players based around the team they support.

    Any thoughts appreciated!

    Lovren out, he's a good player --> bad opening fixtures
    Coleman out, see above
    Barkley out --> Maybe Siggurdson/Nasri

    GET ROOOOOOOOONEY!

    Really don't like your defence. Dawson and Cameron may not start and Vlaar plays for Villa!

    Jovatic is also a rotation risk and Yaya is too expensive, he is impacting too much on your defence and subs.

    Starting to think Lovren might be a better option than Debuchy.

    Young and Herrera could be 2 great differentials.

    I go with D Costa personally ahead of Sturridge, purely based on fixtures. Although not many have Sturridge, so again, he could be a great differential.

    Sturridge is the 3rd most selected player in the game

    My gut feeling was that Rooney & Costa were first choice, my bad.

    Very similar to my own apart from one or two positions - I have Lamela & Dzeko instead of Sterling & Giroud. Main reason for that is that I'm afraid of not having City attacking cover. You're defense looks a bit tastier than mine as well.

    Here's my effort with 1m still burning a hole in my pocket.
    DDG
    Azpi - Wisdom - Debuchy
    Fabregas - Mata - Lamela - Ramsey
    Dzeko - Rooney (C) - Bojan
    SUBS: Siggy, Bruce, Marippa

    For a first draft that is a very good start... The obvious potential holes are Luis (Starter?) and lack of Man City cover as well as having a punt on Bojan hitting the ground running. But I've picked him as well so I hope he does too. I think everyone's hoping Man Utd clean up in the first six games with 2-3 Utd players in everyone's team...

    Seconfd draft... completely changed from the first. Opinions please?

    DDG (Myhill)

    Wisdom - Lovren - Vlaar - Shaw (Bruce)

    Ramsey - Henderson - Fabregas (El Ahmadi - Ince)

    Diego Costa - Sturridge - Rooney(C)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,789 ✭✭✭Coat22

    This is my first dip – will change over the coming days as I start to get under the bonnet but wouldn’t mind some thoughts

    De Gea
    Krul

    Ward
    Luis
    Cameron
    Koscielny
    Cahill

    Sidwell
    Yaya Touré
    Sterling
    Mata
    El Ahmadi

    Rooney
    Remy
    Bojan

    MY thoughts:

    Expect to go 4-3-3 but currently looking like 4-4-2

    Goalkeepers:
    Was going for Speroni again in place of DDG as Pulis is the master of clean sheets in the bottom half but given United’s start and 0.5M difference De Gea gets it.
    Newcastle play home the same weekend as United and Krul unlikely to be used anyway (unless United really tank) so might drop him for a cheaper option, maybe Myhill which will bank 0.5M

    Defence:
    Ward has served me well last season and expect similar again, Cameron probably a squad player.
    Cahill & Luis – Jose the king of the clean sheets and Cahill can score. Luis I don’t know too much about but surely he’ll start most games early on?
    Koscielny – need to have 1 Arsenal defender in there and he’s done well for me before.

    Distin is an alternative option, Not plumping for Coleman yet (although could he be a target for United?)

    Midfield:
    Mata a no brainer given Uniteds start and his position in LVGs new system.
    Toure – think I will drop him before Saturday – not sure of his value just yet and repeating last year will be tough.
    Sterling – should start up front and will score plenty of assists if not. Cards a problem though.
    Sidwell / El Ahmadi – good squad options for the price. Can bag goals.

    Attack:
    Rooney – same reason as Mata
    Remy – good start for QPR and might move before window is out.
    Bojan – reasonable option for what I could afford.

    Thinking of swapping out Toure which will free up some cash. Worried about poor attack apart from Rooney but he can be hit and miss too. Rodriquez did well for me last year before he got injured but not looking at Southampton at all as reckon they’ll be in freefall. Could free up 2-3M by sawpping out Toure and Luis/Krul which should let be bolster the attack but think there’s still plenty to do.

    Lovren could be a good pick but Liverpool conceded loads last season so he better work!
    Vlaar could end up at united – cute pick but risky for a week or two.
    Shaw might not start the first couple of games but should get plenty of assists if he does.

    Pretty decent the rest. Wonder about Costa though but could be a masterstroke. Hard also to know how Fabregas will work out.

    Dropped Sanchez in favour of Sterling, and side-graded Ings to Fletcher, freeing up £3.0m to spread around the defense.

    Team is now sitting at:

    Mannone | Krul
    Terry - Debuchy - Shaw - {Vlaar, Wisdom}
    Hazard - Sterling - Mata - Siggy - {El Ahmadi}
    Costa - Rooney - Fletcher

    ----

    Also very tempted to go for a 2-5-3 team with:

    Mannone | Krul
    Debuchy - Cameron - {Bruce, Wisdom, Dummett}
    Hazard, Mata, Silva, Sterling, Siggy
    Costa - Rooney - Fletcher

    Just a quick draft that took me 5 minutes. Not close to the team I will choose, but what do people think;

    De Gea - [Krul]

    Cameron - Debuchy - Dummet - [Wisdom & Bruce]

    Sterling - Fabregas - Mata - Lamela - [Isgrove]

    Rooney - Soldado - Costa

    Main problem is only one certain starter in defence (Debuchy), I'd expect.

    Midfield is fine but I'd question the use of Soldado, maybe downgrade to Bojan or Fletcher and use funds to bolster defence.

    My thinking was Shaw could rack up a good number of assists this season playing as a wing back in LVG's formation.

    If I was to do as you said I'd be looking at;

    Shaw - Ince

    to

    Cameron - Barkley

    Stoke have a good start to the season bar GW3 when they play City they are playing 15th, 16th placed teams from last season and 2 promoted teams in the first 5 games.

    Thoughts?
