On a visit to the attic last night I spotted our old boxed up DVD collection.
I remember putting them up here the time of the heavy snow which was Dec 2010, they probably hadn't been played for a few years before that.

I've kids that have never played a CD or DVD in their lives, the latest laptop we purchased didn't even come with an optical drive.

I never thought I'd witness the death of physical media in my lifetime, the artwork, the booklet, the notes, the feel of the package used to ad to the experience yet we found it easy to say goodbye once the ease of downloading took over.

Anyway, what was the last time you played a piece of physical media ?.

The weekend before last. Watching the box set of the x_files. Have it on DVD for two years or more and only on season 4

    CD - 2 days ago
    DVD - Last Week.
I gave away my entire VHS collection and VCR on Adverts for free about four years ago.

CD - lasty night in the car.

DVD - played one for the kids a couple of days ago.

VHS - can't remember. The last time I went near a VCR was to remove some food from it that my son hid there to pretend he'd eaten it.

It's definatly been a few years at least. My boyfriends niece(7) came across a VHS tape the other day and asked what it was. She looked so confused when I explained it was a film! Made me feel really old!

Watched a DVD on Saturday. Still more likely to opt for a DVD than use Netflix or a streaming website.

Only really listen to CDs when driving, most recently at the weekend.

Last watched a VHS a year and a half ago when copying to a blank DVD.

I can't remember for any of them tbh. Actually the only device I have that could even play CDs or DVDs is my 360.

    Digital media is still relevant.
Analogue media hasn't been relevant for almost a decade and a half.
Streaming is handy but physical media will be with us for a while to come.

    Glazers Out!

I have a HP microserver in my home office that will stream full bitrate BluRay rips to my smart tv running plex over gigabit Ethernet. I have one laptop that has a DVD drive and that's the only optical drive in the house. I just got a think pad Carbon X1 Ultrabook from work and I'm thinking of ditching the old MacBook.

    Really? They're hard to hide!

Mine is most definitely in a non-physical format...which somehow ended up in a hidden folder in my user profile in a folder called "sys~32_DOC$" :pac:

Well, I tell a lie, I actually deleted it all a while back *sheds a tear*

Analogue Media such as vinyl is making a small comeback since it just sounds better than a compressed digital sound in many ways.

That said ever since I got my Wi Fi/USB enabled Smart TV last year I have not played a DVD since. High Speed Broadband is also a factor.

That was a DVD by the way. I have a six-way CD changer in the car and I use that just about every day.

I played Vice City (from CD-ROM) on my laptop over the weekend. Looked great with everything turned up to 11, I couldn't do that back when I bought it in 2003-ish.

    DVD - Yesterday Afternoon
    Blu-Ray - Last night
CD- This morning while making breakfast
    Vinyl - Sunday afternoon
VHS - Couple of weeks back when I bought the The Return Of Josey Wales

Psychical media isn't dead, it's just not as popular as it once was. That HMV stores are thriving over here says quite a lot. Since it reopened in Galway a few weeks back the store has been constantly busy and one of the staff told me they are doing better business now than before.

I imagine kids have little interest in it though? Kids growing up will probably have little infinity with the "touch" and "ritual" of having physical media, so it ain't dead but surely it's dying. For them it's all about bloody iTunes and NetFlix...everything a click away.

I don't know, I often see kids and teenagers in HMV and the like with CDs or DVDs in their hands. It's going to be a long time before psychical media dies, that many parts of the world don't have broadband good enough to accommodate streaming will play a huge part in keeping psychical sales alive. Streaming a film or TV show is all well and good but until you can get compression less versions then it's not going to take off like DVD did. There's also a lot of music and film fans who enjoy special features, a company such as Masters of Cinema put a lot of love and time into crafting extras for their releases and I know that as long as they continue to do so, I'll continue to buy their products. I'd also imagine that a lot of people like myself, enjoying have a collection of media that they can pick from. A few files on a hard drive just isn't the same as having a few hundred Blu-Rays on shelves.

DVD - last night (24 Series 6) and frequently.

VHS not for a while as my player's heads need replacing....and I have some brand new VHS movies that I'm dying to watch. Seriously tempted to buy a new VHS/DVD combi while they are still available. Many worthwhile movies have never made it to DVD.

CD - never was big into them and while I still have some I'm more inclined to delve into my Grooveshark library.

LPs - still have a few and occasionally toy with the idea of getting a new player but will probably never get round to it. Now a Jukebox, with full visibility of the workings, full of 1970s 45s...that's a different matter and on my wants list. :D

I have close to 1000 Blu-Rays on shelves and it doesn't look cluttered at all. In fact it looks rather nice and I often find myself losing half an hour going through them trying to decide what I want to watch.

Blu-ray is better video quality than streaming hd and the audio quality is way better.
And you get bonus features. And there's a better choice of films.
Why would I give that up?

The correct answer is Midnight Run, it's always time to watch that.

Don't really buy many DVDs anymore, but if there's a good anime series, I'll probably want to get that on Bluray. :D

Cd, would have been last week, after getting bored of listening to radio in the kitchen.

Dvd would have been within the last couple of months. Vhs too.

My kid is going to know all about rewinding the tape when finished!

CDs every day, DVDs not very often. And when I get the chance every few weeks, some vinyl. Nothing like poring over the artwork and notes with some beer while you listen.

One thing people don't seem to think about when they're looking at the likes of netflix is that it's all well and good for popular shows and movies, but once you get into more niche interests, they're not great. I remember on another forum people were giving out loads because they were watching Farscape on netflix and then all of a sudden the whole show was gone, or someone on boards was asking for a recommendation of a good anime show available on netflix, and people were saying there was sweet **** all on there.

  • Registered Users Posts: 552 ✭✭✭Salmon Leap

DVD last weekend, but buying BluRay mostly now.
CDs most days in the car
    VHS about 6 years ago

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,387 ✭✭✭eisenberg1

CD very regularly in the car, but hard to beat the Ipod on a long drive ( no fluting about trying to put CDs back in cases
DVD a few times over last weekend
    VHS, not in years.

I also uses a Kindle, but still have a lot of books. I love the idea of books and CDs on shelves, I always find when you are in someones home for the first time, you can get a good idea of the type of person they really are by looking at their collections.

I think you underestimate the ages of a lot of posters here :D

I still have a reel-to-reel that I use now and again, plus a betamax player that's sitting in a press somewhere, still in working order. You'd be surprised when they come in handy - I've been asked by a few people over the years to encode various old formats to something that they can play on their computer.

And I've had the pop out windows (Datsun Cherry) and the slidey-to-one-side windows (Renault 4). 'Wind the window down'... pfft, we could only dream of such things :p

Yeah, thats something a bit annoying about netflix, my issue isnt so much the library overall, but the availability periods of items within it. You kinda never know whether or not to get stuck into something that'll run for a while.
