On a visit to the attic last night I spotted our old boxed up DVD collection.
I remember putting them up here the time of the heavy snow which was Dec 2010, they probably hadn't been played for a few years before that.

I've kids that have never played a CD or DVD in their lives, the latest laptop we purchased didn't even come with an optical drive.

I never thought I'd witness the death of physical media in my lifetime, the artwork, the booklet, the notes, the feel of the package used to ad to the experience yet we found it easy to say goodbye once the ease of downloading took over.

Anyway, what was the last time you played a piece of physical media ?.

CD - lasty night in the car.

DVD - played one for the kids a couple of days ago.

VHS - can't remember. The last time I went near a VCR was to remove some food from it that my son hid there to pretend he'd eaten it.

It's definatly been a few years at least. My boyfriends niece(7) came across a VHS tape the other day and asked what it was. She looked so confused when I explained it was a film! Made me feel really old!

Watched a DVD on Saturday. Still more likely to opt for a DVD than use Netflix or a streaming website.

Only really listen to CDs when driving, most recently at the weekend.

Last watched a VHS a year and a half ago when copying to a blank DVD.

    Digital media is still relevant.
Analogue media hasn't been relevant for almost a decade and a half.
Streaming is handy but physical media will be with us for a while to come.

I have a HP microserver in my home office that will stream full bitrate BluRay rips to my smart tv running plex over gigabit Ethernet. I have one laptop that has a DVD drive and that's the only optical drive in the house. I just got a think pad Carbon X1 Ultrabook from work and I'm thinking of ditching the old MacBook.

Would throwing them about like Frisbees count? If so, no to long ago! :pac:

[Was clearing out all PC-CD/DVDs, a lot of them dating as far back as 1992...]

    Really? They're hard to hide!

Mine is most definitely in a non-physical format...which somehow ended up in a hidden folder in my user profile in a folder called "sys~32_DOC$" :pac:

Well, I tell a lie, I actually deleted it all a while back *sheds a tear*

Analogue Media such as vinyl is making a small comeback since it just sounds better than a compressed digital sound in many ways.

That said ever since I got my Wi Fi/USB enabled Smart TV last year I have not played a DVD since. High Speed Broadband is also a factor.

That was a DVD by the way. I have a six-way CD changer in the car and I use that just about every day.

I played Vice City (from CD-ROM) on my laptop over the weekend. Looked great with everything turned up to 11, I couldn't do that back when I bought it in 2003-ish.

    DVD - Yesterday Afternoon
    Blu-Ray - Last night
CD- This morning while making breakfast
    Vinyl - Sunday afternoon
VHS - Couple of weeks back when I bought the The Return Of Josey Wales

Psychical media isn't dead, it's just not as popular as it once was. That HMV stores are thriving over here says quite a lot. Since it reopened in Galway a few weeks back the store has been constantly busy and one of the staff told me they are doing better business now than before.

I imagine kids have little interest in it though? Kids growing up will probably have little infinity with the "touch" and "ritual" of having physical media, so it ain't dead but surely it's dying. For them it's all about bloody iTunes and NetFlix...everything a click away.

I don't know, I often see kids and teenagers in HMV and the like with CDs or DVDs in their hands. It's going to be a long time before psychical media dies, that many parts of the world don't have broadband good enough to accommodate streaming will play a huge part in keeping psychical sales alive. Streaming a film or TV show is all well and good but until you can get compression less versions then it's not going to take off like DVD did. There's also a lot of music and film fans who enjoy special features, a company such as Masters of Cinema put a lot of love and time into crafting extras for their releases and I know that as long as they continue to do so, I'll continue to buy their products. I'd also imagine that a lot of people like myself, enjoying have a collection of media that they can pick from. A few files on a hard drive just isn't the same as having a few hundred Blu-Rays on shelves.

God I hate clutter. A little anonymous server is heaven for the likes of me.
