Sad news, but not a great actor imo and his stand-up stopped being funny a few decades ago.

Propensity for all his roles to descend into mawkish sentimentality.

    Thank you Judge Judy!

Never pay much attention to celebrity, but this is a gut-punch. Early memories of Mork & Mindy. Loved the One Hour Photo and Insomnia period.

Dead Poets Society still gets me.

    O Captain, My Captain...

    RIP,
For a strange reason I can't see him being depressed, very sad.

i think that can often be the case with depression sadly, i know when i was in that situation, i covered it up as best i could, badly in my case thankfully for me otherwise i wouldn't be here posting and bothering you all now, but obviously he was better at covering his real feelings which in some ways makes this sadder than it already is,

if his death does anything it should make us all stop for a moment, look around us and maybe ask people we know and love how they are and really listen to them,

and if you yourself are feeling down, don't just talk, but talk to someone who can help you, and keep talking until you find the person that does. don't ever quit, take it from someone who's been there, life can always turn around and surprise you in the most amazing ways.

RIP. We have learned so much about our physical well being but sadly when it comes to the mental side of things we really do have so much still to learn.

Woke up this morning to see my newsfeed on facebook crammed with news about his passing. Still all groggy eyed and tired thought it was Robbie Williams and couldn't care less tbh. Had a shower turned on the tv and was shocked when I saw it was Robbin Williams. Loved his older movies but despized Flubber and Jack. Patch Adams always makes me take a feels trip when ever I watch it.

Yesterday was truly the day laughter died.

This is a great speech from the 2005 Golden Globes.

I also want to thank the Hollywood Foreign Press for acknowledging comedy. Jim [Carrey] you know this. Normally, they look at comedians as, like, very special people... And you allow us to be in the room with the adults. You nominate us. You even have a category for us: comedy... and dancing! There's a lot of dancers that could've been up here tonight but they didn't make it!

Touching tribute to Christopher Reeve at the end, too.

He really was. In more serious roles like Awakenings or One Hour Photo, he really showed there was more to him than comedy.

Exactly - One Hour Photo in particular showed what a diverse actor he was - great movie

Of all the people you'd least expect to be depressed !

    Nanu nanu

I heard someone on radio say the same thing - "never knew he was suffering from depression."

But he was clearly very manic at times - even for a larger than life comic. It was obvious (imho) that he would have had corresponding low periods.

Loved The Birdcage, The World According to Garp, Dead Poets Society.

So so sad, looked like a very nice and genuine person. Will be sadly missed by all of us who grew up laughing with him. RIP

    RIP

Loved him in good will hunting. It's my go to movie for curling up on the couch with a duvet.

never a fan of his in the early days, found his comedy too manic too american for my liking

but must admit i did warm to him as the years past esp with his interviews & acceptance speeches he came across as a likeable chap

his serious roles were more memorable, notably one hour photo he was mesmerizing in that

    RIP

Never would of thought of him as being depressed. Great actor and great voice actor. Been singing Aladdin songs all morning.

RIP Robin. Gonna be humming that Mork and Mindy song all day now. :-(

He'll be remembered by many for his comedy..

I always thought he was a great dramatic actor as well, his work on Awakenings and One Hour Photo showed how versatile he was as an actor.

    A great talent....RIP

The world got a little darker.

I liked his comedy, "Good morning Vietnam" is still something that will make me laugh outloud. But I think he was fantastic in his more serious roles, "The Fisher King" is one of my all-time favourites.

I'm amazed actually that so many people here remember him so fondly, I always kind of felt as if he wasn't all that well-known.

I remember him once going on Letterman, or Leno - I forget which .........

but he went into this "zone" of comic genius .....a zone....of pure comedic outpouring.......he was ranting, raving, making noises, pulling faces, jumping up and down, telling gags, the interviewer was bit bits laughing, the audience was rolling over laughing.....

its a epic comedy, only as Robin could deliver.

    RIP to him.

I hope he's at peace now.

    RIP Robin.

It's sad to think that a man who made so many of us smile and laugh could have been so unhappy behind it all.

I hope he's at peace now.

Just so sad really . Imo, I think we sometimes forget that actors as good as he was , can also have their own demons that haunt them , we think they're beyond the clutches of depression .

Truly great actor , his eyes always got me, sad and soulful.. RIP..

Really? I'm not sure how you could have thought that. I can't think of a single person who wouldn't know him, and that includes my primary school aged children. They love the Night at the Museum movies, but have also seen Jumanji, Hook and Mrs. Doubtfire as they are all screened fairly regularly on TV.

Only hearing this now. Very sad. One of my earliest tv memories is watching Mork and Mindy on RTE in the early 80s and being fascinated by this crazy alien. His ability as a serious actor was just as remarkable as his comic talent.

I'm so sad to read he had such a long struggle with the dark side. May he RIP.

Indeed, that seems to be a fairly common reaction, people don't seem to be as familiar with manic depression.

I've always felt Williams was quite undervalued as an actor, but it's only on reflecting on that this morning that I realised just what a body of work he has left behind - Good Will Hunting, Dead Poet's Society, Awakenings, Good Morning Vietnam, the Birdcage, the Fisher King, One Hour Photo, Mrs Doubtfire, the list goes on. His role in Aladdin pretty much redefined acting in the animation genre.

Well, whenever I mentioned to someone that he was my favorite actor, the reply was usually "Really? I never knew Robbie Williams had made any films?"...

Do you be talking to young children, like? Jaysus, he's one of the most recognised comedy actors of all time
