I'm genuinely saddened at this news. I was just on IMDB reminding myself of all his great roles, and what struck me was the amount of scenes that sprung to mind that were incredibly moving and memorable, from Dead Poets Society, to The Fisherking, to Good Will Hunting, to Mrs. Doubtfire. He had a warmth and a humanity that brought something special to his roles, but sadly, probably also made him vulnerable to the mental health issues that tormented him.

R.I.P Robin, and thanks for all of the top class entertainment.

P.S On a side note, in an effort to verify the information as quickly as possible, I landed on Sky news just in time to hear them read out Sharon Osbourne's reaction to the news. Who the **** is the slightest bit interested in what she thinks?

Steven fry almost did himself in while depressed too.
He had planned to do the whole garage/exhaust asphyxsiation thing but was interrupted iirc.

Even aside from it being disrespectful, what exactly is the point? Do they want to see a feckin' body bag or something?

When I saw the title of this thread it made me stop in my tracks and knocked me for six. Celebrities rarely interest me beyond their work as there's few who I'd care about but Williams was always one of those exceptions, he was a fascinating man.

The man was a manic fruitcake, but exactly my type of fruitcake. Growing up, as long as there were people like him out there then I knew I wasn't alone in my humour which was shaped a lot from him.

I absolutely loved his energy and how fast he'd come out with a quip during a conversation, he just left interviewers in the dust.

Every time I saw an interview of him I always said "I need to watch a movie of his again" and slap one on. We watched Mrs. Doubtfire about a month ago again because of that reason (His last appearance on Graham Norton) and we still loved it.

I grew up watching all his stuff from Mork & Mindy, Popeye, Hook, Mrs. Doubtfire, Jumanji, etc. Even the schmatlzy stuff he was in I'd give him a pass as he was the only reason to watch even his less well-received films. By golly, though, he could knock it out of the park in more serious films like One Hour Photo and Good Will Hunting.

He was a complete riot in interviews but when it came to something close to him like his close friend Christopher Reeve he showed a far deeper (but still funny to lighten things up) side to him:

Absolutely loved his speech to DeNiro:

I knew of his past problems but just never expected his life to end this way, such a large ball of life to be suddenly snuffed out. He was like a hyper friend you always knew but could also turn off that madness to show that there was far more to him than just gags.

Unfortunately, a lot of times, people like him are hiding something more behind that exterior others see. It's good to talk to someone if you need to because they might not see beyond that mask, just as much as you might not see beyond theirs either.

A terrible end to such a great presence, he never failed to put a smile on my face but never will either, even now that he's gone.

His appearance on Inside The Actor's Studio is a thing of utter, manic hilarity. 5 mins into the interview before he even answers a question, amazing improv skills

    Be tried again pretty recently.

I wish Robin loved himself like the public did him.

I've been there myself. Fortunately what stopped me was stopping for a brief moment and thinking about the aftermath for my children and my family ..... mostly for my children.

I'm very sad for Robin's family right now. :(

I'll always think of Robin Williams as the genie from Aladdin, that character still beings me to tears of laughter :) At the time he was recording the voice of the genie Steven Spielberg was filming Schindlers List, and Robin Williams used to make calls to the set to cheer everyone up as it was such a depressing movie to make. That struck me as the kind of guy he was, he just wanted to being a little bit of happy into other people's lives. How sad to think he struggled to find it in his own.

    RIP.

I found out about his death on the Indo tonight. :(

I'm heartbroken to hear that he died in the way from a mental illness that can hit everybody regardless of their status in this world. His talent in his acting is now tragically cut short and this shouldn't have been the case if he was still here making us laugh and cry while at the movies.

R.I.P Robin. We will miss you.

He was a frequent visitor to deployed troops. I recall a very entertaining evening in Iraq. I view him as a successor to Bob Hope. I'm not sure who would take up the mantle now.

    Robin Williams was fantastic,

But WHY do we have to suffer the plastic faced moron with the Hollywood sign behind her as Embley asks her the most trite questions on BBC News?

Why can't she just appear in a room....or do we have to see SH!T in the background all the time now?

Very sad news. This world is f***ed up. Such a waste. He was a wonderful man and made all the more endearing because of his daughter and how she got her name. R.I.P. Robin and my sympathies to your family and friends.

Ok well that has me in tears :( Not a nice thing to wake up to. Like loads of people I grew up watching mork and mindy. I think this is one of those deaths that will touch a lot of people because of the nature of it and what a unique man he was. RIP

Yeh, something melancholic about him underneath it all. I think similarly of Jim Carrey, who is likely to have been very much influenced by Robin Williams.
Not trying to be funny but I can't say I'm exactly shocked at the news, my friend and I thought it was widely known that he had issues, or if we'd both just made the assumption. We also both mentioned Jim Carrey, though I think the issues aren't the same for both.

Touching note about RW just posted by the actress who played one of the young girls (the older daughter) on Mrs. Doubtfire.

I usually don't really care about celebrity deaths, but this one kind of devastates me. Oh God why. He always reminded me of my childhood - Mrs Doubtfire, Jumanji, Mork and Mindy....oh this is awful. NO!

RIP Robin ... Everyone loved him except himself, it seems... So sad..
Great memories of him from my childhood...

Just thinking of that scene in Mrs Doubtfire where she says that holding the cold meat she's reminded of Winston. Then claims it was the drink that killed him to which Miranda replies, "how awful, he was an alcoholic", however Mrs Doubtfire quickly clarifies that he was actually hit by a Guinness truck. I love that scene along with so many others and can't imagine anyone else having the delivery that Robin Williams has here.

I guess the world is lucky to ever have had a character like him. I really agree with what Obama said that he really was a once off.

    Definitely someone ill never forget.
