Oh also, on the Apple vs Android debate (AGAIN?)

I have a Macbook Pro because they are the best built laptops you can get (I treat mine very carefully and it's lasted 5 years so far without a hiccup, and I've done my own upgrades). It's last the same length of time as my previous 3 laptops (2 Dells and a Toshiba).

I use an iPad 2 because when I bought it (March 2010) Android tablets were all rubbish and I was developing an app, so the iPad was the obvious choice. Still going strong and I have no need to upgrade it because it does everything I want in a tablet (movies, games, basic office work).

I use an Android phone (Nexus 5) because the iPhone is too locked down and, unlike the other devices listed above, I need my phone to be the most versatile thing of all because I always have it on me. I need to be able to do things like open a PDF, make adjustments, zip it and upload it to my FTP server for others to download and I just can't do that on an iPhone (or my iPad).

Brand snobbery goes both ways, and I've met far more people who snort at Apple users than I have Apple users who put down the PC. I know I personally couldn't go back to a Windows PC (I used a massive PC workstation for video editing at work so it's not that I'm out of practice or anything)... Mac is just a nice OS to use and the hardware has stood the test of time. My iPad is first and foremost a toy so I don't need all the customisation and tweaking options offered by Android, but if I did I'd get a nexus tablet.

Just get the device that does what you want it to, because at the end of the day the 'best' phone is the one that suits your needs and budget.

    Very wrong.

Try finding a windows laptop with all flash storage and a very high quality, high definition screen and build quality and you'll learn they are around the same price as the MacBooks.

The €500 computers you're buying are not comparable at all to them, that's a myth.

Computers are computers. phones are phones.
That's what I'm trying to say.
I got my phone for 190 euro, which does all the email, PDFs, word, excel, internet, the lot. I have not seen a lot of difference between the Sony I have, and an iPhone.

And I didn't say I have a 500 euro computer, I would NEVER spend that much on a laptop, I got my Toshiba for 300, the most expensive item I own!!

Maybe its just I don't have extremely high expectations and don't need "the best" of everything.

But if people want to spend money on HD screens, large screens, and memory,
Go ahead. But I think ye are bonkers!

But that's it, that suits you and your needs. I don't look down on you for buying cheaper products than I would, because why would I care?

My sisters spend obscene amounts on make up and clothes, but that's grand because it's worth it to them, so I don't see anything wrong with it.

There are undeniable differences between high end laptops and smartphones, if you don't care for anything other than the basics, there's nothing wrong with that, but you can't say a computer is a computer, just because it'd be wasted on you and your needs.

I'll be ordering a MacBook Pro during the week, but it has everything I want in a laptop and it'll last me years over a PC -not to mention a similar spec PC would be about the same price anyway, so I'll go for the Mac instead.

There's nothing wrong with having different priorities. You might drop a huge amount of money in areas I wouldn't or wouldn't see necessary, for example.

Some people like apple, some people don't like apple, some people couldn't give a flying fcuk.

    What's the problem?

Again, it's all down to what your needs are. I need a decent GPU and a lot of memory because I work as a photographer and videographer and my machine needs a fair bit of grunt. I also need the package to be portable because I do most of my editing on the fly, so it has to be a laptop. The use cases above combine into something that isn't cheap, so where you say you'd never spend more than 500 I say I'd be surprised if I could get something that suited my needs for less than three times that.

But again, different people have different needs.

Hahaha, as if North Face could ever be used on anything that is more than an 8km doddle around Glendalough. Now if you said people were cutting about Dublin in a RAB or Mountain warehouse/Equipment jacket, then I'd be judging!

Most of the clothes that Jack Wills make for women can only be pulled off by women with top tier genetics, the type of women that can relate to me.

People who wear Birkenstocks are right-on vegetarian hippies with liberal arts degrees, unkempt hair and an embarrassment of recycling bins in their kitchens.

Birkenstocks are amazingly comfortable though. I truly believe it's why their wearers are so stupidly mellow.
I yearn for the day I can afford them again . But they will never make me a liberal unkempt veggie. Never I tell you.

    Peace out ðŸ¾ðŸŒˆ

There are a few Birkenstock wearers who shirk the stereotype alright, and they are nothing if not comfy.

I spoke to a gentleman in purple cords and a yellow jacket about recycling and pollution recently, and I knew before I looked at his feet that he'd be wearing Birks. :)

I have numerous pairs of them myself. Nothing mellows anyone out like a moulded footbed :P

You make an outlandish claim involving a superlative and then follow it up by listing two brands for comparison that are infamous for poor build quality. :pac:

Not really outlandish. MacBooks have the highest reliability scores of all laptops.

    According to..?

Nobody rigorously tests this or takes all factors into consideration, so in general I suppose it's a fairly pointless debate to get into. When these things are scored it's often on the basis of user votes, or review scores, which doesn't really give you a clear non-biased result as people are, in my experience, less likely to display the kind of brand loyalty to a PC laptop supplier as they will to Apple.

Now, to be clear, I'm not disputing the fact that Apple generally provides good build quality, but I would absolutely expect this from a premium brand; they don't sell budget machines.

If you buy a laptop in the same tier from the likes of Lenovo or Asus, you will find the standard is similar. That is why I take issue with superlatives like 'best' in this case - it's totally misleading. Generally speaking, you get what you pay for.

I remember when anyone who wore a Ben Sherman shirt was thought of as a scroate. At the other end it would seem that quite a few daddy's little princesses end up wearing Abercrombie and Fitch.

Outside of clothes some people feel that Apple worshippers can be a good indication of that person being, well, a bit of a wanker ;)

What labels and brands (if any) do you judge people on?

Anyone who judges someone based on their clothing brand is a first class arse hole

Infamous for poor quality maybe, but examples of what most people would end up spending 3-500 quid on. If memory serves Lenovo are still the highest rated Windows laptop for build quality but I don't think they have anything with discrete graphics and enough grunt?

When you look at Macbook pros and the associated price tag and compare them with an equivalent Windows machine the difference isn't nearly as drastic as others have suggested. I have yet to come across a single Windows laptop with all of the things I value in my MBB (nice screen, brilliant battery life, great build quality, great trackpad). If I did I would seriously consider it, but tbh I do also just like working in Mac so it's apples and oranges (no pun intended). Didn't mean for the claim to sound outlandish and I'd agree that plenty of people buy Apple stuff just for the name, but there are some of us who've come from a PC background who genuinely think the MBP is the best bang for buck for what it's going to be used for.

If you want a Windows laptop and Lenovo don't have a model that suits, take a look at Acer or Asus. In the higher price brackets they won't let you down. Apart from that, if you are happy with Apple then far be it from me to tell you to do anything different. That's not what I was taking issue with. ;)

Your life would want to be pretty meaningless to define yourself so strongly by the operating system installed on your mobile phone.

Do you mean THAT pattern? Because Burberry clothes other than that can be quite nice. And the pattern in itself is grand, it just attached itself to people looked down on by others. Can't imagine the damage it did to the brand, must be pretty profound.

First it was the caps, then it just exploded. This was a turning point:

It's hard to market your heritage pattern as elite after that! Burberry are still struggling to regain their original market.

You need to be in fantastic shape for leggings to look even remotely flattering, most women certainly in Ireland just don't have the shape to pull it off.

You don't have to show off your arse in them, you can wear them with longish t-shirts or short dresses. Most women are able to pull them off if worn like this.

Oh yeah, I got dragged off my original point. I was taking issue with people suggesting that everything Apple makes is priced for the brand, and pointing out that an equivalent (even higher specced) Windows laptop will usually end up costing close to the same price, and that I had a Dell laptop that cost the same as my Mac but lasted less than half the time. That's it!

I negatively judge people who insist on buying the "luxury", "quilted" toilet tissue. To me it smacks of snobbery and social climbing.

It's bog roll ffs, you're only going to be wiping your hole with it, not eat your dinner off it.

(Having said that, I usually only buy the second cheapest version, that "recycled" stuff just doesn't seem right) :o

Its not a social climbing issue its an absorbtion issue. You need to use a lot more of the cheap ones to get the same effect. Hence it's false economy. To paraphrase a popular saying buy cheap, wipe twice.

Maybe you need a dietary adjustment?

But yeah, buy the cheapest bog roll available and you'll end up cursing and washing your hands a few times during each visit.

to paraphrase further: buy cheap, wipe twice, then wipe the **** off your fingers, wipe again, then once more for luck. Then wash your hands four times.
