How is it hypocritical exactly? Paddy Barnes is fighting as an Irishman from the jurisdiction of Norniron in the commonwealth games. Unlike McIlroy I don't think Barnes has ever considered declaring for Great Britain.

Still though, maybe he might hand back his medal if it looks like this. :)

Huh, that's odd. The medal says 'British commonwealth', not just 'commonwealth'.

(So I guess it was called the British commonwealth, someone said I was wrong :p)

I cannot find a link on Google that shows 'most of the athletes in Glasgow are being followed by police', care to share?

    I know, my point is:

Empire < British commonwealth < commonwealth < super adventure club?

I know what the Commonwealth is and it's history but if you are trying to make a point about Barnes winning a medal, do use the correct one

Who are you trying to kid Sutch?

    Us or yourself? :p

Why are you (in particular) so anxious in this thread to belittle the commonwealth games?

You have made it very clear you do not wish to ever see Ireland compete which is fair enough, but to be so unrelentingly negative about the games themselves strikes me as being quite curious.

Glasgow has done a fantastic job with these games. The venues are world class, the crowds have been excellent and the sport has been thrilling. What is not to like?

Aside from entering these games, a few people mentioned better relations or trade links with other countries.

Is this based on anything , are there any free trade agreements or anything that exist ?
No. The first thing that has to be said here is that the Commonwealth is not a common market, trading bloc or free trade area. Members enjoy no formal economic access or incentives to trade with each other.

Hence Ireland (or indeed any EU member, such as Portugal or Denmark) enjoys vastly greater access to Britain (and British markets and capital) than even the most favoured Commonwealth nation. For those major Commonwealth economies outside the EU (Canada, Australia, S Africa and India), Ireland is perfectly capable of negotiating bilateral trade/access treaties. Hence, again, Ireland has better visa access to Australia and Canada than most Commonwealth nations. (We also benefit from EU membership in this regard.)

So the argument of 'trade links' comes down to 'well, they'll like us more'. This is something that both overstates the importance of the Commonwealth (as if membership automatically made you more attractive than other Europeans) and ignores the ability of Ireland, like any other country, to strike up bilateral relations with certain countries. For example, Commonwealth membership was irrelevant to last year's trade mission to India.

So I see nothing to suggest that joining the Commonwealth would have any meaningful impact on the Irish economy. Certainly not after the costs of annual membership dues were accounted for.

In what way do you think Ireland needs to mature? That is very patronising. Rejoining this excuse for an organisation - a relic of Britain's former empire - would not be good for this country nor our self esteem.

It would be the equivalent of a battered wife returning to her husband after many years of separation because "he has changed". It does not matter how much Britain has changed

So India, Bangladesh, Jamaica etc are all what, stupid?, ignorant of their past? Suffering from low self esteem?

Do you not think your comments are patronising?

Think you made that up but all by yourself because I don't see it in the quote?

Anyway, what advantage is it to Ireland to rejoin the commonwealth? Apart from getting to hang out with our imperialist buddies every few years?

I don't see any great advantage, but why are Ireland somehow morally superior for staying out, when many other countries with a similar history play an active role?

It's not about history to some posters, it's about having a chip on their shoulder.

It's like someone slagging off their neighbours brand new bmw because all they can afford is a fiesta. It just comes down to good old fashioned begrudgery.

You can be sure it's much of a muchness.

While I agree with your idea that Ireland joining the commonwealth being a bit pointless, what you specifically said about police following most athletes around is in now way in hell even close to what the story in your links - any of them - let alone being anything of a "muchness".

Quit sensationalising. One, if ruins your credibility even when you have a valid point; and two, you always get caught out.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

How are we morally superior for not taking part? Where are you getting this general consensus from? Infact, I've yet to hear anyone talk about it outside a few bits in the media. People don't give a fcuk that it's on one way or the other, lest not care enough for any "I feel morally superior to Britain" bull****.

How do I as an Irish person have a chip on my shoulder because I don't want to be associated to Britain or the Commonwealth? I like their people, many of them are the salt of the earth types, some c*nts, some alright, just like in any country. But I'm Irish, they are British and that's that. And I think most people feel the same.

So how do we have a chip on our shoulder as a nation? Cause some little unionist posh boy's D4 family, who got left behind in Dublin after partition, and fawns over everything British, says so? And looks for non-existent, anti-British sentiments and tries to blow them out of proportion at every chance, to show how we're a nation of Celtic jersey wearing, British hating, armchair republicans with some inferiority complex to Britain? Who's really the one with the chip on their shoulder?
