You call it a high horse, I call it obeying the law.

Ireland is already a part of the EU, so youre too late to avoid nutty dictators!

OP if it happens again, here is the number to report it. Make sure you record it on your phone too.

I'm not as up on the law as you claim to be, but isn't that entrapment and no court or garda would entertain it.

Entrapment? As I am not from Ireland, I would not be aware of all the little changes in the law from the UK, so I would be perfectly justified in asking the staff a couple of questions to ensure I myself was not breaking any laws. After discovering it was all illegal I would be sure to leave, now that you have warned me it is against the law to be on the premises after 30 minutes.

I wonder if they called "last orders" 30 minutes before they locked the door, from the OP it seems not as the OP seemed surprised to suddenly see the ashtrays appearing.

I know in the UK some places tried to avoid being caught by claiming "private party" and people would allegedly put money behind the bar before it closed, and then redeemed the money as drink after it closed, therefore they tried to argue they never technically sold drink after the cutoff time. You can imagine how that stood up in court, poor effort.

What I'd like to know does this happen in a lot of pubs were they let people smoke after hours ?
In ones I have been in you had to go to a separate area, if allowed at all.

In many pubs I go to illegal smoking is going on all the time, during regular hours, this is since the areas which appear to be smoking areas as illegal as they do not comply with the regulations

    Outdoor smoking areas
While smoking in an enclosed workplace is forbidden, employers have discretion to provide an outdoor smoking area, subject to the requirements of the law.

The law has defined an outdoor area as:

A place or premises, or part of a place or premises, that is wholly uncovered by any roof, fixed or mobile.

An outdoor place or premises that is covered by a roof, so long as not more than 50% of the perimeter (outside) is covered by a wall, windows, gate or similar.

Some are borderline, some completely take the piss, I remember being in one pub smoking area and was wondering WTF people were doing smoking inside, my mate pointed out we were "outside", it was roasting hot and stuffy, thought I was still in a fully enclosed room.

Slattery's tried this I think but it didn't last long. I'm not sure if that was for legal reasons or not. Upstairs in market bar too but I think that's still on the go

Interesting... As part of the argument here who choose to be selective in terms of the law they obey you also are very selective as regards the laws you are going to admit to having an understanding of. You are not qualified to be considered anywhere close to competently understanding the debate. Go off and educate yourself and perhaps come back to us then with complete with your idiots guide to morality and feel free to lecture us on the basis of actually knowing what you are talking about.

Actually PM the OP and you can both go for a jar with your google glasses and your moral high ground you'd be well suited pair of....

Stop your "them and us" mentality, the law applies to everyone, the sooner you come to terms with that very simple concept the better.

I would not expect you to understand, I hear you lot still think you're rebels. Definitely without a cause!

I have a concept of the law, you don't yet speak as a moral authority and assert to certain actions which in fact would make you break the law twice, the guy with the after hours pint is only in theory breaking it once. As you have twice admitted to. It's time you joined the rest of us and got the concept yourself. ;)

TireeTerror I honestly can't tell if you're trolling or not. If so, good one buddy! If not...well I just don't want to meet any new people all of a sudden.

Excuse my ignorance but I would have thought screaming would be quite difficult if you were dying of lung cancer.
Was that a disgusting attempt at a joke or are you just genuinely a moron?
I'd say a bit of both. You'd be surprised at how someone can scream when they're crippled with agony and facing death.
I'm sure a lot of attitudes here will change when the ' it will never happen to me' bubble bursts. Hopefully no one has to experience it, but statistics say otherwise.

You know I actually have setup a bar in my house, with draught and pool table and all that kind of thing. My friends got awfully excited about the idea of being able to smoke inside while playing pool. So far its alright seeings as its scorching hot these last few weeks, but I cant wait until the winter and they are standing in the rain greeting to get back in. My smug joy at this will be suitable compensation for about 3 years of my life being called "square" because I was the only one who didn't smoke despite their best efforts to try and humiliate me for not wanting to.

Oh how the tables have turned looking down upon them from my ivory tower!
