Smoking in Pubs after hours

I was in a pub (which I wont name unless I'm given permission to) in camden street in dublin last night when it got closing time the barmaid shut the main door into the pub and starting handing out ashtrays then half the pub started smoking.

This was a shock to me I have not been in a pub were people were smoking since the smoking ban was bought in. It made me remember what the horrible smell of tobacco was like which I was forced to inhale.

I woundn't mind so much if this pub had a special room for smokers but this was in the main bar and it was impossible for non smokers to avoid breathing in the smoke.

What I'd like to know does this happen in a lot of pubs were they let people smoke after hours ? or maybe I just went unlucky to have gone to a very dodgy establishment ?

You could leave. You were invited to stay on for a lock in where it's impossible to have people going in and out the door for a smoke. Happens at every lock in.

I was not invited to anything the pub just stopped letting in any more customers.

They should of kicked you at at the normal closing time.

You were invited by not being turfed out at closing time.

They handcuffed you in there, right? You were kidnapped, no word of a lie. Stockholm syndrome is a bitch.

There's always the one, the one who gets in on "it" and fcuks "it" up for everyone else who quite liked "it".

When it closed it's not trading, no longer considered a workplace and becomes a private party? A guess only.

People can't go outside to smoke as the pub as it's supposed to be closed.

    Stop being such a square.

well it must be dodgy establishment if its open after hours:P:P

that being said a barman said to me before...its a much worse offense to serve after hours than ignore the smoke ban....so they couldn't have the smokers out on the street like

The law bit stopped after they locked the doors and you were happy enough breaking that one ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,563 ✭✭✭leeroybrown

Sorry? But you're complaining about a pub allowing smoking when they're already allowing you to stay after hours for a pint? You are aware that you're breaking the law yourself by being there? I'm not a fan of smoking but what a publican does in the premises after legal licensing hours is their own business and at their own risk. Get over it.

Congratulations. You attended your very first lock-in. After your first communion and you confirmation, this is the next big step in your life. When you grow up, you will realise that the purpose of the lock-in is to give the birdie to the nanny state and ignore their rules. Not only did you witness a person smoking a cigarette, but if you looked hard enough, you may also have noticed someone being given a fresh pint after the state-mandated closing time! And nobody died!!!

However, should your hear anybody mention a dirty word - you know the type; the f-word or the s-word, well, then you should go immediately home to your mammy and tell her everything. She'll know what to do.

At a private party you don't hand over money to buy drinkers.

Sure they were already breaking the law by serving drink after hours anyway, "now that we're here, we may as well go too far"

It was after the pubs opening hours but not the legal opening hours.

Eh, you did have a choice. You could have chosen to leave the pint on the counter and leave the place if the smoke was bothering you that much. You weren't "forced" into anything so stop feeling sorry for yourself and just be glad you got a lock-in.

Those places would have a late licence, anywhere that closes the door at 1am has a regular one.

OHMIGOD!!! How did people not die in droves before the ban???? *loud noises*. Jesus, when did we become so bloody beige.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

    Fire for a start
They had no license for after hours .

Surely though any bar that does this runs the risk of complaints the next day as the smell will linger and customers won't like it, complain and not go back and possibly report them leading to fines?

OP it was a lock in. They would have already been breaking the law by letting people stay on the premises and by serving drink, I doubt that letting people smoke or not would be top of their concerns. Besides imagine not letting people smoke after they've had a few drinks on them, it would be bloody carnage!

Yeah, I suppose it was like being in a sort of a time warp OP? Happens occasionally down the local if it's lashing outside, people are told to go down by the fire and say nothing. It's honestly not the end of the world.

No point having a lock-in and having people standing at the door with sniper beacons

So, technically a regular pub license allows sale of alcohol until 23:30 on a Wednesday with 30 minutes drinking up time. Unless something very odd (and it would be very odd given the cost of late licenses) happened the bar was already serving one hour after hours at 1am.

Give me patience. Now we'll have half of AH traipsing around Camden Street next week looking for lock-ins. Which is a bit stupid...as if you've got to go looking, you're already locked out. Unless you know the secret tap.

Yes but it would be hard to prove they were serving drink if anyone came they could just say they were letting people finish their pints.

Has happened at any lock in i've been at. I dont smoke, but where else would I expect the smokers to go.
