This is shamelessly stolen from Lazygal who posted it in Ranting & Raving - look at this beautiful, simple cake!!
I haven't been so amused in a long time

    Love the instructions:
"Repeat until you’ve used all the donuts."

I could do this on my way home - head to doughnut booth on O'Connell St and then head to Moore St for flowers.
Now if only I was getting married, that would be the cake sorted in 10 minutes.

OK. I tried this recipe today but substituted the cake stand ingredient for a plate ingredient instead. What a failure, It was nothing more than a plate of donuts no matter how many flowers and greens I put on it. A bastardly plate of donuts! I am ashamed. #glitterfail

"This recipe seemed perfect for my rehearsal dinner, but I find donuts too sweet so I substituted sprouted, whole-grain, gluten-free bagels. I wanted the occasion to have that trendy, DIY hipster feel, so I got creative and replaced the flowers with taxidermied fetal foxes. The next day I found myself waiting alone at the altar, weeping. What went wrong? This is a tricky one."

    Hahahaha!!!

"Crud - I did it all wrong! I read the recipe backwards and made a donut-shaped cake! I hope my friends still like it"

I'm lacking any inspiration for dinner tonight. I did want fish, but now I've changed my mind and don't know what I want.

Can't seem to decide on anything. I'd like something spicy and meaty though I think.

    The search continues. :(

    Thai red curry with monkfish?

    Prawn linguini with chilli?
    Spicy meatballs?

So I made naan bread to accompany dinner last night. First time making it.

We had a few friends coming over, herself was making a huge pot of curry and I had a load of flour in the cupboard, so I said why not. The bread came out surprisingly well, the guests were mighty impressed. (the curry was up to its usual high standard, I should add :) )

Thanks for the suggestions, prawns are out as my OH is allergic to them, don't think he likes fish curries which is a pity :(

Might do spicy meatballs, thanks Merkin.

Everyone knows you can only catch things through PMs, not off the general forum.

Is there something going on between you two?

Ooh it's a nasty one too - I'm just starting to feel human a week in. Hope you're feeling better soon.

We're really Joan Burton and Frances Fitzgerald and we're having secret Dáil meetings via PM ;)

Was planning to make meatball subs for dinner.... Until I opened the mince and realised it was gone off. Now it's almost half 7 and I've to ransack the cupboards for a plan B. Absolutely raging, I'd bought nice rolls/cheese for it and everything!

Just reading this months bbc good food magazine. Page 135. Ping Combes, winner of this years master chef, was asked what her most memorable meal. The restaurant had no menu, and asked 2 questions when they were seated. Are they vegetarian and do they like it spicy? They were brought out loads of little plates, filled with various foods. Wow.

Appropriate. Whenever that kind of thing happens me, dinner tends to end up being crisps.

Thankfully found a pack of gnocchi, pan fried them and made a quick tomato sauce so wasn't too bad.

It's the second time in the past few months I've gotten meat from a supermarket that has already gone off, in future I'm going to try and buy as much meat as possible from a decent local butchers!

Often in supermarkets people abandon foods that they have changed their minds about in or around the checkout desk (or indeed anywhere in the supermarket) I always pick them up and give them to the checkout person. It drives me mad because it is such a stupid waste of food - the supermarket can't resell them if they are chilled products. Recently I was in a supermarket at the checkout and when I gave some chicken that I had found under the counter (!) back to the assistant and she said "Thanks, I will put them back on the shelf"

I wonder how often this happens and well meaning staff just put stuff back rather than throwing it out as they are legally obliged to. I have seen lots of complaints on here about people buying meat that is gone off when it is well within its sell by date and I wonder if this is the reason.

Tbh it's why I will only ever buy meat from my trusty local organic butcher. I actually have a really good relationship with them all at this stage (involving lengthy chats about food mainly!) and now the man who owns the shop often tells me when they have something particularly good in. I used to buy the occasional bit of meat in <mod snip of named supermarket chain> until Mr.Merkin and I cooked a loin of pork and were both violently ill within about an hour of consuming it, just made me realise we have noooo idea how long it's been sitting there and under what conditions! People think the butcher is more expensive but it's actually not when you consider that you buy the exact amounts you require and it's cut fresh there in front of you too!

    This drives me effing mad:mad:
I recently saw someone abandon 2 bags of frozen food at a closed check out.
    Why don't these people think!!

I probably have been guilty, on occasion, of not returning food to its proper place but if it's chilled it went back in a fridge and if it was frozen it went back in a freezer.

That drives me insane! I saw a woman in Lidl the other day change her mind about the fresh bread she'd picked up... so she opened the freezer she was passing and threw the bag of bread in. I know it's not a food safety risk in that case but it's wasteful and ignorant :(

I have seen some really bad practices. Some don't care, some are ignorant, some are astonishing -one being the practise of putting reduced price fresh meat which is going off that day on trolleys nowhere near the fridges, the mind boggles.

The same woman will probably be giving out about price hikes in a few weeks!

Reminds me of seeing gangs of scumbags at bus stops moaning about ripped down timetables, which they probably ripped off themselves a week earlier. Or vandals wondering why insurance is so high.

Can anyone recommend somewhere online that I can buy chipotles in adobo sauce? I need it for chipotle mayo. No where near me sells either chipotles or chipotles in adobo sauce, and I won't be in Dublin or anywhere for ages so unfortunately I need to order online :(

I never buy food online (tesco order excl!) so I've no idea where would be a good source for them.

Also, another question: are jalapeño really hot? I see them everywhere but have never tried them. I have this idea that they are eye-wateringly-burning-hot for some reason, not sure where I got it........

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,057 ✭✭✭MissFlitworth

mymexicanshop.ie does, although they're a little more expensive there than they might be if you found them in a shop. Alternatively a lot of the butchers around me are selling big squeezy bottles of chipotle mayo at the moment, in with the garlic mayo & taco sauce, might be worth a look!

Jalapenos are sliced chilis, with the seeds still in. So they're pretty hot, depending on your tolerance for chili heat

I am so glad I am not the only mad old bat that goes round supermarkets giving out and muttering like a mad yoke about people wasting food and generally behaving badly. I shut fridge doors that are left open and put stuff back in its rightful place. I am sure people must think I am crazy!

Aren't jalapenos just a kind of chili ? I wouldn't say they are very hot any way, low-medium heat if anything.

I made Ouzo and Cucumber Jelly last night. Had a bit now, turns out it's quite strong!

I jusst cooked up some lemonade and Connemara whiskey jelly. Maybe it will set by tonight ( probably not).

Anyone any good jelly shot recipes?

I think Stripedboxers is talking about jars of pickled jalapenos, so closest I can describe them is slice chilis, seeds still in, in terms of giving an idea of the heat. I don't find them that hot but my non heat liking buddies find they burn the mouth off them
