Those who were hesitating about splashing out on this Chromecast might hesitate further with the release of the Roku-on-a-stick for $49:

The use case is somewhat different for each device, so not a like for like comparison.

The roku stick is a condensed roku STB so no different from the regular roku stuff except more compact.

Any advice on setting up eircom efibre modem with the chromecast?

It just won't connect to wireless for me.
I've tried it on 2.4ghz(?) and tried disabling QoS and neither worked.

I don't have an e fibre modem but my only issue was my modem wouldn't come up on the list. After many hours of messing with it I them remembered my SSID was hidden. The chromecast doesn't give the option to add a network so had no choice but to make it visible.

Another thing you could try is changing the channel on the router. Someone at the beginning of this thread mentioned that the Chromecast only working from channels 1-10.

Not sure, I've the efibre modem from Eircom and it works no problem.

Hmmm. I wonder what you're doing right then.

Thanks for your reply. My SSID is visible and I only can avail of channels 1-10 on my modem.
Any suggestions from you or anyone else very welcome.
    I hope I won't have to send it back . :(

    How is Rte Player playback?

Does the Live playback work on it?

    it works but it's..... watchable

streaming streams direct from a browser tab is always a little slow and jerky. at high quality for me it still plays fine on the tv but there's this constant noticeable...jerkiness to the video that just drives needles into my brain and I can't deal with it.

Nooooo :( had it in my mind to buy one today. Does any other bricks and mortar store stock them; I don't really want to buy it online (delaying gratification and all that jazz)

I wonder if the sudden removal of all Chromecasts from Argos hints to the release of the Chromecast from Google officially?

Seeing as though IO begins next week this seems very likely IMO.

I was thinking the same thing. Probably one or two additional locations you can purchase it along with the Google Play store online. Don't think it will make a huge difference as it's easy enough to get now either via Amazon or Argos.

It's the bonus stuff that comes with a release that could be more interesting. Do you think we could be lucky enough to get an official release of an app? eg It launched with Netflix and a few others in the USA and the BBC iPlayer in the UK. Same thing for Japan, Spain, Germany, etc who all had local apps launch with Chromecast support. Could we get the RTE Player with chromecast support or Google Movies in Ireland?

Google Play Movies seems kinda likely as a few days ago Google Play made a post like they usually do when a service comes to a new country but it was realeased too soon so they took it down pretty quick.

Not sure but maybe Ireland was on that list of new countries?

Be good to have RTE/3 Players with Chromecast support or maybe even SkyGo but that probably won't happen.

I'd hope we'd get official Chromecast availability and support from Google.

Just wondering zr105 how do you use yours? Is there any latency issues with streaming stuff?

Sorry only after seein this now, main use for me is streaming netflix, it's very handy, just flick through netflixs on the phone app then tap stream and it pops up on the tv, our internet wouldn't be wonderful at times but I've rarely had problems with fit streaming, think only once it lagged a bit during playback. Other than that an odd time pop on music vids from YouTube as its handy, you can que up the videos and they just play through the list then.
