Ser Alliser is a sarcastic, contemptuous, stubborn, arrogant prick. He screwed up royally when he ignored Jon Snow and refused to block the tunnel.

He's a second rate leader and he knows it.

    I like him. :D

Yeah me too, he's a first class combat leader though, and a quality fighter. His blunt speech (with me, now, with me) was great though.

I think what he said to Jon Snow was as close an apology as Jon will/would have ever gotten from it and it took a lot of balls for a character like him to come out with that imo.

Before last week i'd hated him, but after that i have a lot of respect for him :)

I liked that moment between him and Jon. The way Jon repeated the importance of holding the gate made it feel like he practically knew he was sending him to his death and Grenn was accepting because it was his duty.

The reason Ser Alliser was such a great character in the end was that he ****ed up big time, but knew he ****ed up and dealt with the consequences like a proper commander. It's hard not to respect him for that.

Another thoroughly satisfying episode. I love a battle, and it really delivered. Jon became much more likeable and his fight with Styr was well executed (pardon the pun).

So many more highlights but I particularly enjoyed the Scythe scene, the Mammoth, the release of Ghost and the tragic end of the Jon/Ygritte love story.

The finale is going to be amazing!

ps - Slynt hiding in the corner? I'm hoping we get a good axe-to-the-face ending for him soon for such cowardly behaviour!

A bit that confused me when the guys were in the tunnel - Think some of them had arrows and went to shoot them but Jon said no, they had to hold the tunnel.

    ^^^
    Something like that

Anyone explain why they didn't shoot at the giant?

I'd have to watch it again but was it not just that they were trying to do a runner and Grenn held them back?

With the commander injured, is the coward now not in charge?

When Jon sent them down he just stressed the importance of holding the gate. When down there someone said something about how are they supposed to kill that thing, there's 20 arrows in him already. One of the guys then started to panic and tried to leave but Grenn held him there and then they started saying the vows.

I'd imagine so. The only people who seen him hide are Sam and Gilly and he might try blackmail Sam to keep schtup or he'd turf out Gilly.

If he hid and refused to fight he's broken his oath to the Watch. He'd be in no position to turf anybody out, he'd get the turf himself if not hung!

The reason they didn't show the fight in the tunnel? Good drama, with a careful on the power of editing; I mean, you wouldn't show those lads, exuding great bravery in their recitation of that NightsWatch creed, immediately getting eviscerated by a furious giant, now would you? To show it later would just be too cruel for school.

Yeah but only Sam and Gilly know he hid and broke his oath. As far as any of the rest of them know he's in command if Ser Alliser is dead. With nobody else there to assume command its doubtful they would all turn on him on the back of what Sam has to say and for Sam to say it would be a pretty dangerous accusation to make against the commander of the nights watch with his friends Pip and Grenn dead and Jon gone off looking for Mance.

But is Ser Alliser dead? We saw him get wounded, and then carried off?

Maybe not, but as far as Slynt hiding goes even wounded and bedridden he may be unaware of it and give him command or pass his orders out through him. I don't think it will be as straightforward as one guy and a wilding woman accusing a commander of cowardice and have him removed from command. Things aren't that simple in GOT.

Then again maybe it'll be well known and Ser Alliser will have him beheaded. Who knows.

    Drop the scythe boys!!!!

Had to be one of my favourite tv moments! The whole episode was glorious though.

I actually have started to really like Sam, thought he was deadly in that episode,...when he cursed "Pip open the fuc*ing gate!!!" :pac:

Pip's death hit me way harder then Ygritte, did not see that coming and in typical GoT gruesome fashion. That said, no more naked Ygritte :(
It was a nice end to the Jon/Ygritte relationship though.

Roll on the next episode, been dying to know what happens in Kings Landing avec Tyrion.

Hopefully we get a little more insight into Jon Snows plan as at the moment it just seems stupid. Can't see Jon dying though all the same his arc was just starting to get awesome!

Question, does the rest of Westeros know the Wildlings are attacking the sh*t out of the wall? I know they have other stuff going on but come on people!

Didn't Tywin mention that there was a wildling army building up across the wall in another episode? Can't really remember so I could be wrong. I assume once the attack hit or they seen the fire they would have sent a message out to kings landing using those messenger birds they use.

It was in a deleted scene, Twyin said let them invade, it would give Robb Stark and the Greyjoys someone else to fight.

Stannis was the only who seemed to care about their messages before.

I thought he said it when he was talking about Oberyn and needing the Martells on his side.

To be honest I was expecting Stannis to show up at the end of the episode and save the day, kind of disappointed it didn't happen. But I suppose it depends on how much time has passed. He got his cash for the army but has to get from Bravos to the wall which seems like a long journey!

Dunno if this has been mentioned before but there's one thing that's bugging me, just at the end of the scene where Ygritte and Str of the Thenn nearly get in the fight (I'm spoilering this lest anyone thinks I'm a book reader)
who is the cloaked figure watching them and then turns and walks away?

Gilly, I didn't know at first but looking back you can see the baby.

I thought it was one of crasters old birds with a baby bringing it to the woods. Must look again and see

I also thought that when Gilly knocked on the gate, she was being used in some way by the Wildling army to gain access or something more sinister.

Crasters keep was north of the wall. It was Gilly heading to Castle Black.
