We have three cats - two females and one male, all neutered. We kept them all indoors but when our first child arrived, the male started spraying in various corners.
We stuck acat flap under the stairs into the side passage and built a run along one of the side fences and the problem was solved instantly.
The litter trays are in the side passage and the cats have a fair bit of freedom and can sun themselves while at the same time not soiling the neighbours' gardens.

Not aimed at you but I don't buy the argument that cats need the freedom to roam. In theory, dogs do as well, which is why they hunt in packs if they're ever allowed roam free. However, people keep their dogs under control.

Not arguing with you, but I pick up the dog poop from my front lawn no big deal to me, it's a much easier life than arguing with the neighbours. And to be fair my cats crap in gardens, but they bury it so nothing to pick up.

I like cats myself. I've been reading up a little... They hate change and are super sensitive to differences in routines, behaviours etc., they don't like it to be too noisy but not too quiet either, a radio turned low is ideal and get lonely if left by themselves for too long: another cat of the same sex or a sympathetic dog can alleviate this

The cat orgies ? Are your neighbours having sex with the cats ?

    Sick perverts.

I like cats, dogs are too needy, it makes me laugh when someone thinks that their dog has a special bond with them, a dog will have that bond with any person who shows them attention and feeds them.

You do know its the same thing with people too, right? Babies form a bond with their parents under the same conditions.

Owning a pet is a personal decision. I can never understand why people think getting a cat is a community decision. I don't care what pets people have, as long as they stay on that persons property.
I have no problem with cats, my problem is with cat owners who think it's okay for their pet to defecate on other people lawns, and annoy other peoples pets.

I prefer dogs but cats are a lot easier for me to keep in my situation. I would like to get 2 female cats (Im not putting up with kittens after getting those 2) and have them as indoors cats. Problem with renting is that many landlords dont want pets in the house.

what the problem? You sound like one of those people that just hates cats for no reason

Cats should be neutered, there's way too many cats that need homes.

The problem is the come into my garden and they kill birds. They should abide by the same rules as dogs. ie the owner should be in control of their pet at all times.

Wow they kill birds. What about birds killing worms?

Cats kill birds that's why mine are not allowed out much they don't go further than my or my neighbours garden and they don't kill birds.

Tbh I got a great relationship, with my neighbours so that's why they don't mind my cats, and I didn't really care about their dog crapping in my garden.

This thing of always being on the attack drives me mad. I'm glad I don't have some people here as neighbours.

The whole spraying thing is really disgusting. And some people have said their cats have done this inside the house? *puke* :(

My neighbour got 2 x kittens about 2 years ago, both male.

This has quickly turned into (attracted) 2 x male cats, a female cat and it's kittens. I get they're not like dogs, that they cant be hemmed in as easily, but I reckon she should be at least trying to keep the population under control.

I didn't mind cats until recently, now I'm plagued with:

them using my front garden (well a corner of it) as a litter tray. (not ideal when you've kids)
Leaving me `presents' of dead birds, mice etc at my back door.
Smell of cats pee constantly in the air.
Noises at night from their cat orgies.

Give me a dog any day of the week.

    Deffo a cat person.

But I am AN ANIMAL PERSON.

I love them. I volunteer at the DSPCA and walk the dogs and groom the cats horses anything!

We have a a mini Dachshund. Love him.

We used to have a cat but old age ...:(

When my dad gets better I think will get another cat.

Deffo a cat person though. But that does not mean I don't like dogs.

It's just cats suit my personality and they 'do' something to me.

I love the sound of cat orgies ....it's their wildness..:D

She should get them neutered though deffo ...it is irresponsible and cruel not to unless it is PLANNED responsible breeding.

You know it is usually not dogs or cats people don't like ... it's the owners.

    But yeah CATS!

    And all animals...but CATS!

I have five cats. Four male, one female. Love them all to death. They love me (when they want to!!) and that's the way I like it. Dogs are too loud and needy imho. I can't stand the sound of a dog barking, or annoying dogs that jump all over the place. I'd gladly have more cats if I could. They're great! I have two family dogs but they're more my sisters dogs. I still love them, but I'd choose a cat over a dog any day.

I have two cats, one male, one female, neither have the ability to become parents.

The female has very little interest in going outside, when she does, it's just to the back garden.

The male however loves being out (though we keep him in at night). Thankfully my neighbours love him and laugh at the fact he goes into their houses when their windows are open. I'm mortified by it, and if anyone ever complains, I'll make him an indoor-only cat.

If anyone has Animal Planet, you should watch "My Cat From Hell". The guy helps out people with 'problem cats'. It's generally the human's fault, and he fixes their behaviour. Most of the cats featured are indoor-only, so it can be done, as long as you put the effort into exercising them through play.

My cats are indoor only cats. They have been all their lives. They're all at a decent weight and have no behavioural problems. Sometimes they show interest in going outside, so I bring them out with a harness and lead (people think I'm crazy!!). They normally decide after that mortifying experience that they never want to go outside again :D

I currently have an old tabby of 12 years who won't go outside anymore, I live in the country and even as recent as last summer he'd spend a lot of his time outside hunting. I had a young ginger who died in Sept last year who was full of adventure and sprite, I wonder did his death play a part in the older ones behaviour.

Usually at this time of year I'd see mangled dead rabbits at my front door on a daily basis. Maybe he's retired.

Ah a fluffy, warm, cuddly, purring cat is the biz! It's like a vibrating cushion. :D

One of my favourite sounds and sensations. I think care homes for the elderly should have cats. Some old folks would have had pets and would miss them, and a dog would be too much work for them, but a friendly cat to sit on their lap would be lovely, easy company. They'd also keep away rodents and be fun to watch in the garden.

Got one curled up to me on the sofa, another one opposite on a chair, the third one is having a snack in the kitchen and the fourth is upstairs stopping the husband from using his computer at the moment.

I love all animals, but after having been attacked as a child I'm very wary of dogs. Not the handbag-sized little ones, but anything approaching knee-height scares me.
Which would not be much of a problem if people actually controlled their dogs and wouldn't let them roam, or just run around off leash down our road. They usually end up charging into the garden, delighted at the sight of fleeing cats, and I have to gather what meagre courage I've got to yell at them to get lost... :(

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't want to see any harm come to them, I would just like their owners to be a bit more responsible.

Do they not object when you sit on them though? :)

I like cats, I like dogs. I like walking dogs so they're more fun for me to own.

    Are you a cat person?

Why, yes I am. Thanks for asking! :)

Have two/three cats at the moment (one has decided to become a bit of a roamer and comes and goes as she pleases!).

In truth, I'm and all animal person really (to an extent), and would love to own a husky whenever I get my own place. They're absolutely gorgeous dogs. Ideally, I'd have a Husky pup, and a kitten (or three) and have them grow up together, encouraging them to actually get along!

Purring is just the biz. A really loud purrer, like a machine, is just such a therapeutic sound.

I take back "vibrating cushion"... and replace it with "vibrating hot water bottle". :D

I have two cats :) both female. I live on a cat friendly road and I love it. Our landlady above us has one and the lady next door has four. Two of hers practically live at mine. They come in and out of my house, sleep, get fed etc. The garden is always full of cats. My two never wander further than the garden. They're all fixed so no problems at all! It's great having someone to drop in and feed your cats for you if you need and I've minded both their cats many a time!
