Can't find any OPTA ones of him

It's like calling Michael Carrick box to box, it's just wrong and thanks whoring combined

I think he has played both roles.

He has played some games in the Gerrard role, dropping deep and dictating from deep.

Other games he has played further forward in a similar role to what Allen currently performs.

Leverkusen played a 4-2-3-1 for the most part last season, occasionally a more 4-3-2-1 set up against better teams with a slower, more methodical possession style of football, not similar to tiki taka in anyway. It was reserved football under Sami Hypia which is one of the reasons Leverkusen fans were unhappy with Sami, especially at home where they were used to swashbuckling style of past Leverkusen teams. Lars Bender goes forward, Can sits. Can goes forward, Lars sits was the theme this past season in their midfield when they did play together usually, except for a time when Can had to cover at LB in which he did a decent job except against Man U in which he went missing defensively on numerous occasions. During the spell when Lars Bender was out to injury, he did get his chance as a box to box midfielder though and did very well.

Can is very much a jack of all trades player and this is a massive reason why Liverpool are signing him. While he isn't outstanding in any one area for the time being like Nuri Sahin is (specialist deep lying playmaker), it's quite obvious Can is far more mobile and athletic than him. When the game is stretched, he is at his best, the box to box style he was reknowned for when a youngster in the national youth team set up, similar to Ballack in his pomp for Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich. It was the reason Bayern signed him up in the first place from Frankfurt. They saw a potential future Ballack. For the Under 21's, he's a box to box midfielder, if anyone would like to deem it simply as a central midfielder, be my guest. That's his best position. Box to box should be his future role. He's far more than a DM and deep lying playmaker.

If Liverpool sign him, he's not going to dislodge Gerrard next season. More than likely, he'll play on the left of the diamond midfield, assuming we're sticking with that. If it's a more three man midfield, Gerrard will continue to be the one as the deep lying playmaker with Can and Henderson being the legs at both ends of the pitch.

But yeah, it's thanks whoring. Nice choice of words btw.

3.47 is just one example of what he is capable and what I'd expect from him in Liverpool's current set up and not something I've seen from a deep lying playmaker.

As I've said before, and going by Rodgers comments pre-game vs Rovers, if he's signing him on the basis of being our young DM, I'll be disappointed as his game is nowhere near where we need it to be for a DM. I'm honestly of the opinion he's better of staying at Leverkusen for one or two more years before moving on, but as I eluded to two weeks ago and as Oats as mentioned, he is sketchy personality wise. Certainly a hot head. I'd love Geis at Mainz myself, again a name I've mentioned before and who is of similar age to Can. He is a specialist DM who's game is more mature, but I suppose it helps when your role is very much cemented in a team. Versatility is a strength for some as it is a weakness for many players.

edit - I do agree with Oats in parts, but I can somewhat understand the rational in signing him on the flip side too. There is potential there and if anyone is going to help him in developing that, it's Rodgers.

Anyone fancy going for Borrell's old Academy Director job?

Costa and Fabregas to Chelsea? :(

We've really got our work cut out to win the league next year, feels like our chance might be gone (sorry for the negativity, but that's how I see it - I called it right last year that Chelsea would win nothing because of their mediocre strike force. Can only see them as a real threat if they get two world class players in).

If they pull off those signings they will have a squad at least as strong as City's, add much needed goals to their team and have basically replaced Lampard and Drogba, two club legends, with players of probably a similar standard.

Still feel that last year was our big chance for the league :(

For me, I think it'll be Arsenal and United who will be our rivals for 3rd/4th next season.

Am I right in saying Costa cut out a lot of his more unpleasant traits last season?

I wonder how long it'll take Mourinho to reinstate them?

    lol
Tottenham have hijacked Liverpool's move for Sevilla left-back Alberto Moreno, 21, by tabling a £14m offer plus Roberto Soldado on loan and throwing in midfielder Etienne Capoue

    Daily Fail :pac:

I wonder are Liverpool working their way from the front with transfers? I suppose what I mean is our first signing was a forward (Lambert), next hopefully will be a midfielder with Can. Maybe we are building up to 1 or 2 really big defenders? As in big name players? And possibly another goalkeeper as competition for Mignolet. It's probably just wishful thinking on my part though.

Seems like Chelsea are the only club who want Fabregas, that also speaks volumes too. Damaged goods perhaps.

How so? I don't get the Fabregas negativity at all.

Barca want rid and no club in England (barring Chelsea) seemingly want him.

its probably a wages issue in our case but its telling that none of the big spenders want him.

I think there is a feeling out there that he failed at Barcelona (rightly or wrongly). I mean there is no logical reason why they are letting him go when Xavi is on his last legs and Iniesta is getting on as well. Yet letting him go is exactly what they are doing. Doesn't mean he can't be a success somewhere else but I don't think the market for him is as hot as many thought it would be or it would have been a few years ago.

Its early in the transfer window, but i have this horrible feeling we'll be in the market for "potential" again which will be very dissapointing considering the season we've just had. From what i've read, this Can bloke sounds like another Alberto/Aspas type buy, not good enough to take us to that next level.

The names linked have been quite underwhelming so far alright. Still a sense that we are shopping in Lidl while everyone else near the top is shopping in M&S.

That said the time to judge it is probably at the end of the Summer. One big signing could change the entire perception of our Summer transfer activity.

Fabregas is quality and would be an excellent signing.

Maybe the new manager has history with him ?

Fabregas would be my number 1 target is he's achieveable. 30 million for him, even with massive wages would be a game changer. One of the very best midfielders to play in the league over the past 10 years - and still only 27. Just the supreme master in moving play from the middle third into the dangerous areas in the final third - and given the quality we have up front, he'd absolutely thrive!

Gerrard, Henderson and Fabregas, with Can, Lucas and Allen in reserve. Yes please.

Haven't spotted anything on this on the website yet, but an interesting move if it's real. Might be a move to get him more into the financial/marketing arena, leaving the sporting/day to day stuff up to a new recruit.

Since we're plundering Southampton, wonder if they'd approach Cortese since he's free.

MARCA with another Suarez front page today saying offer of between €90-€100 million.

Operation Suarez is well and truly in full swing.

was inevitable I suppose and I ain't calling how it will be come end of Aug.

Let marca run their toilet paper filler.

But yeah. I guess come September 1st we'll know how this will end up.

If it's a world record size bid then I can only see 1 outcome tbh.

There wouldn't be too many alternatives available for Liverpool really

That's in euros. It wouldn't be a world record.

Is Suarez really worth 9 or 10 Albertos?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,214 ✭✭✭✭rob316

He is absolutely irreplaceable and the club know it. I would love to see a statement come out from Henry that says he is not for sale at any price but we all know real madrid will get him if they want him. If they did submit a bid of £90m and he wanted to go it would be impossible to stop.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,399 ✭✭✭ush

Hope the club has replacements lined up for Suarez.

    Hmm... This is a Conundrum.

As much as I think that there is no Player that is Irreplaceable, the Problem is that there are very few Players available that are on his Level, that we can actually get.

I'll gladly accept something lower from Real, Say £50M. But they have to give us Isco + Di Maria too. :D
