Could very well be but IMO fairly unlikely - Kroos tried to force Bayern into a corner and get a massive new payout, they refused blank and Kroos himself obviously doesn't want to move away.

I just can't see 3 starting midfielders being signed in the Summer. It's probably going to be one of Fellaini and Carrick and a maximum of 2 incoming.
Could be wrong of course but I'm not seeing the complete transformation of almost every position in the team that some are suggesting.
I expect there will be a lot of money spent on not so many players.

I reckon we could (and should) get two starting midfielders.

    De Gea
    Rafael--Smalling--CB--Shaw (maybe)
    Strootman-CM
    Mata
    Januzaj--RVP---Rooney

Have Fellaini, Carrick, Cleverly to back up Strootman (or whomever and the other CM), Kagawa to backup Mata, or Rooney can drop in.

I think we could see massive changes in the next 2 or 3 seasons, but it won't be all in one go. I think Cleverley, Carrick and Fellaini could remain as squad players the coming season, and maybe moved on the following summer and replaced with better squad players.

How long before Utd are linked with the entire Dutch WC squad? Papers going with Janmaat, Indi Martins and Clasie this morning. Although 1 paper has Clasie as a target for Swansea/Crystal Palace so which level is he at?

Supposed interest in James McCarthy being reported by Sky with Cleverly going the other way. Martinez is a big fan of Cleverly's so cash + player could persuade him. I'd imagine McCarthy would fit a role similar to Carrick's if anything ever did come of this. All here say I suppose...

Your getting a better player in McCarthy so it's an upgrade at least.

People looking for van Gaal to bring in 5-6 players are living in a fantasy world. The maximum I can see is 3 first team players being brought in this summer; a left back, an experienced centre half and a central midfielder. We can't go into the season with just Smalling, Jones and Evans but they have to be allowed to battle it out for the position, adding an experienced centre half into the mix would be good for stability and injury cover. A left back needs to be bought. I think Evra will stay. It's vital that we keep some experience along that back four and Evra is a huge leader in the squad and has tonnes of experience. If he wants to stay and is fine with less playing time then he should definitely stick around.

A midfielder should be bought. But let's not forget we're still carrying Fletcher, Carrick, Cleverley and Fellaini. Fellaini is a good player. He was short of confidence last year and he was dreadful but so was Carrick, Cleverley and Fletcher. Nobody had any ground around the middle and the team suffered because of Moyes' constant pandering to Rooney by letting him do what he wants around the field. The whole tactical set up was clearly wrong from Moyes and it wasn't just Rooney either, constantly playing with width when we didn't have the players doesn't help either. There was huge spaces in the middle. Carrick or Fellaini beside a new central midfielder should be a decent combination to move forward with.
    De Gea
    Rafael Smalling/Jones Evans/Jones LB
    CM Fellaini
    Kagawa
    Mata van Persie Januzaj

We know Kagawa is going to have a bigger role under van Gaal. Ferguson and Moyes' inability to use Kagawa properly was inexcusable when the team was crying out for another creative player.

McCarthy would definitely be an improvement on Cleverley but wouldn't be of the calibre of midfielder that we badly need right now. Pity about Kroos, would've been ideal.

United consider £12m move for Dnipro winger Konoplyanka

A couple of weeks ago Liverpool seemed to indicate that they wouldn't go back for him, with the likes of Greizmann, Sanchez, Pedro being looked at.

Agreed weve got enough mediocrity in that area as it is . We need a world class signing .

    Folks,
Is Kevin Stootman actually any good. Also if you seen him play in the Italian league and perform well it would certainly be no indicator as to how he will perform in EPL and hopefully CL after next season. What sort of player is he i.e defensive or attcking midfielder and is he a regualr with Holland when fit of course.

Strootman would be a holding midfielder, but is just as good when used as a box-to-box midfielder. Earlier in his career he was compared to Keane. He would be in the first 11 for Holland in the WC only for the injury and played close to every qualifying game. Only 24 as well, and was very suprised when we didn't try and get him last summer. Picked up a bad knee injury in March, and expected to be out til August. He was the best player at the Euro U21 cup last summer after Thiago.

Strootman is more box to box than deep lying.

We need a real top quality signing in CM, I hope the rumours are true and we are in for Fabregas, now that the Kroos door looks shut.

He is used as the tempo setting midfielder in the Dutch side by Van Gaal, and he considers Strootman and RVP to be the most important players.

What's the latest rumours on Fabregas? Hopefully it doesnt turn into last summer again ala nonsense bidding for a player who doesn't want to leave or a club who doesn't want to sell.

    Kinda as I said.

Could have bought him for 15 m last summer. Said he'd to go Roma and be immense and if you want him your paying 30m+

Was a pivotal cog in Romas romping success for the first half of the season. Injury aside is nailed on Dutch captain after RVP anf cemented his place pretty much on arrival to the Dutch senior team.

He's going to be a serious European CM and we dilly dallied and will pay through the nose now. Injured or not.

    What about jordy classie?

Fabregas and Strootman is still dreamland stuff for me anyway. People wouldn't be long forgetting about Kroos if that were to happen.
These are the type of signings that I will only be happy with this time, pissing about with mediocre to barely good names isn't going to cut it.

If De Jong, Clasie or Schaars is playing he plays as the box to box with Sneijder or van der Vaart playing the creative role. If De Guzzman is playing he plays the deeper role. In WC Qualification he played the box to box role more often than the deeper role and he's so much better there IMO.

If we're buying him it should be for that role, because, while good playing deeper, he's not in the same league as someone like Fabregas at doing it.

At least a new winger looks more likely: http://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/may/23/manchester-united-move-yevhen-konoplyanka-ukraine-winger-dnipro

Seems like he prefers United over Liverpool.

    Who would blame him?

This better not happen because I can't pronounce that. Januzaj seems to cause people enough problems and that's relatively straight forward.

I read back in Jan an article when we were linked to him, and I am nearly sure it mentioned Van Gaal as scouting him as a youth when he was at Bayern.
I cant for the life of me find the article.:(

if true he is definitely a fan

Konoplyanka could be a great success or another Lamela who I thought was going to be very good

His transfer fee will be low though so not too much risk.

Excluding Januzaj, he can't be any worse than our current first team wingers.
