In what way are they crappy? They excel at stop start driving and motorway is just as good if not better imo and there's always Semi these days for some fun if needed.

fun is always needed! If you want to sit there doing nothing get the bus :pac:.

Not when you have to change gears it doesn't.

The cruise on my old Astra allowed you to change gears when you hit resume. The clutch not cancelling the cruise put the sh1ts up me the first time coming up to a roundabout changing down and it took off at full tilt.

What Auto's were shifting at the wrong time for you?

Any I've tried, they either change or echo or they hang on at close to red line for a few seconds before changing.
Even a 535D I was in (not driving) would rev to the limit, hold it and by the time it ha changed you'd already be half way through the next gear in a manual.

If you want to be an oul fella feel free but for everything other than stop start, there's manual. ;)

Fair enough, I suppose I probably just haven't tested enough, the BM one in the 5 series seemed very good.

You can change gear all you want with CC on in my car and it won't cancel it.

Have about 200 miles up on the new Matador tires, and I'm impressed. Was just out in the rain, and a foot to the floor pull on greasy roads didn't result in any slipping at all in the rears which was surprising! And cornering and ride are also far better than before. Also, the plugs were changed in the last 600 miles or so, maybe 1000 but the engine is now running better. it could all be in my head, but I'd swear it is! If I wasn't hungover I would have done the fuel filter yesterday!

Had to drive an auto commercial Santa fe towing a trailer for a few days recently. Torture. TORTURE I TELL YOU!!

Autos have their place. I wouldn't buy another Merc with a manual.

On the hunt for the next car at the moment. I think I'll be going to view a few next weekend. Won't be the W124 coupe I was thinking about, as it's not practical right now. So, I'm gonna put on the sensible hat. I can say, it won't be diesel, or bog spec, and I'll be buying it from a garage.

Once I get more space I'll get the coupe also. :pac:

In a world of twin clutch semi-autos, manuals automatics are ridiculously antiquated. They are quicker, more comfortable, and often more economical.

The same could be said about automatics.

Manuals have the simplicity advantage. Less likely to lock up and spit a random warning light when the control system or ECU throws a wobbly.

Having experienced a 1.8 Laguna with a knackered autobox, never again. Lovely car, but when it locked in third gear it just refused to be fixed.

    I just can't trust them.

The 535d auto gearbox in sports mode (which I used on the last day I had it, around navan...) would be faster changing than a manual 'box. Excluding just slamming it into gear without clutching of course.

Well that was an odd sensation

Just accidentally drifting around a smallish roundabout in a 1.6 daysul.focus hatch listening to enigma....

    Alrighty then :pac:

Bollocks, manuals are far more fun as engaging.
Twin clutch paddle shifts are great if you're racing and need the shift in a 1/100 of a second but for me they completely take away part of the driving experience that I love.

And Cleveland, you don't clutch before you shift, once the pressure is off the gear, clutch and shift simultaneously. :)

Watch some old Senna videos, or some Best Motoring International races, touge ones in particular if you want to study up on peddle technique.

There is stuff with a semi or full automatic that you miss out on...

Nothing like murdering a clutch to get the back end out.
Not relying on power to get it out, it's kind of like having the cars control set on beginner, you just don't feel as connected.

and you miss out on shift locking especially :D

Whats Bollocks exactly? Semi-autos are quicker. They're more comfortable, and they're often more economical. Are you denying that?

He never denied any of that OSI, he just said that they leave you disengaged from the car. I love the feel of fast driving on a road and battling up and down the gears etc.
It just adds to the excitement.

I have driven a DSG Gti and I felt it was great to drive and the gearbox is astounding but I'd miss the gear shift when pushing hard. Boring even.

You've had some of the driving feel taken away from the whole experience and to me it suffers for that.

    How many have you tried?
I was thinging your passenger seat experiecne in 535d was strange, from below it seems not in sport mode at the time. lots of laughs :)

I drive manual personally but if I spends several thousands on car I get an automatic. I work as driver in the past and automatic simply wonderful.

They are talking about car jackings there on the news, one in Mountjoy square and another in Ballsbridge while stopped at traffic lights.

Yeah, I was supposed to be buying the car, it was a big misunderstanding.

I've always been locking my car doors that I it is now a habit, I usually scare the kids that I give a spin to sometimes when I flick the lock switch....I should really explain to them instead of having the parents worry! :p

By the way, I see dozens of opportunities to rob handbags from ladies as they are carelessly left on the passenger seats!

    Be Warned!

My doors all lock automatically when the engine is turned on, its a handy feature but as you say it can freak some people out.
