Rodgers can sign Peter the Panda if he likes, as long as he delivers results similar to this season.

Some signings didn't work out. That happens at every club.

I think if he did sign a Panda, this place would explode.

His corners alone are worth 10m.

I'd agree with most of that, but Skrtel is quite fast. Its one of his better qualities, really.

Over a distance, he's ok, but not if he has to move with an attacker or get his feet sorted. Sakho seems to have good powers of recovery in that regard, more on his toes.

what is most surprising is how good our season has been despite our poor signings

mignolet - ok, some good saves, some high profile errors in key games and needs to be more commanding in his six-yard box

    6/10

cissokho - tries hard, athletic but doesn't look great on the ball

    5/10

Llori - loaned out, didn't play

    no rating

Aspas - Looks nervous and physically not up to it, seems to lack confidence - not contributed at all

    4/10

Moses - the new fans booboy, poweful and fast but lacks composure at times and seems out of sync with the fast interplay of the other attacking players

    5/10

Luis Alberto - another one who looks weak and underpowered, has shown signs of being neat and tidy on the ball

    5/10

Toure - started well but then proceeded to become a little error-prone and can look clumsy and reckless at times (not ideal for a centre-half)

    5/10

Sakho - big strong guy who looks to dominate cente-forwards but again can look dodgy on the ball and like the rest of the defense - tends to go into panic/retreat mode when we concede i.e. he's not the commanding figure/leader we need (which is to be expected as he's a foreign guy coming to a new league)

    6/10

......Imagine what a few good signings will do for us if this season is the result of such a poor hit-rate in the transfer market
    Think you're being very harsh.

Mignolet deserves a 7. He's been brilliant for the vast majority of the season, it's just a shame a few high profile errors have blotted his copybook. I don't see much of a difference between himself and Reina, but given Mignolet's age, I would have to side with keeping him.

Cissokho also deserves a 7. He started poorly enough, but the since the turn of the year, he's actually been very good. As a player who was brought in as cover, he's done his job very well.

I'd give Ilori a 7. I've watch most of his games for Granada and I have seen a lot I liked. He reminds me a lot like Sterling last season insofar as his talent was blatantly evident, but the player himself was incredibly raw. When you compare him to Wisdom (a decent player) who's the same age, plays the same position, you really get an idea of just how good he could be.

Aspas has been a disaster admittedly. I just don't think he has the ability/mentality to play with a big club and I expect him to return to mid-table obscurity. 4/10.

Moses showed a few flashes of quality, so I'd be inclined to give him a 5. Again, as a player who was brought in to provide cover, I don't think we can be too harsh on him.

Alberto was a major disappointment, but I expected it. I said it at the time, but it made no sense whatsoever letting Suso go out on loan (Suso is a year younger and even then had shown more than Alberto did). I don't think his move to us has worked out and I expect him back in Spain. Can't say I am bothered either, even Shelvey tried hard to play his way into the team than he did when he asked to play for the U21 team. 4/10.

Toure started well, but then made errors and lost his confidence. I'd give him a 6 anyway for the simple reason that he looked our best defender for a string of a few games.

Sakho seems to be a bit divisive among us. For me, he's a top defender, but to maximise his strengths, you need to get the right defender to play next to him. In days gone by, that would probably have been a decent ball player like Agger, but his star seems to have fallen. Potentially, Ilori looks like he could take on the Agger role and for me, I think there is the possibility of a very good partnership. I think a 7 is fair, but it'll be interesting to see how we shape up defensively next season.

btw - I don't see how signing another centre back could help, we already have 8 players with decent high level experience! Surely there is a combination from these that works!?

Skrtel, Agger, Sakho, Toure, Wisdom, Ilori, Coates, Kelly

High level experience? Doesn't matter, there just not good enough, Toure & Skrtel particular have been a liability for you in crucial games this season. You need 2 sign two world class central defenders.

Someone mentioned Steve Clarke recently and I think re-hiring him would be a good start before we sign any players.

It's as though the defenders are being coached as to not leave space behind them I case teams exploit it?! Is it a concern about Mingolet not coming of his line fast enough or the fact that our defenders aren't particularly quick?

surprisingly at ease with how things turned out (not that its over btw) ,best nights sleep in yonks delighted with the season, and the future prospects..

utd won leagues even when having non top class squad fillers .. we need a few quality players, not 6 or 7 , and swap a few non playing squad players for others with more about them .. im looking forward to the transfer window because our options are not as limited as the last few years ..

fair to say we are a draw to players now

Villa are not going to beat Man City at the Etihad.

This is simply not going to happen.

Centre backs and the goal keeper have to considered a unit.

Right now the unit consists of a fella who is not that communicative, a Frenchman who is learning English and an English speaking Slovak who is himself not a shouter. Its not hard to see where the problem is.

I wonder what difference Carra would have made if he hung around for an extra season, as a maybe 15-20 game player.

We conceded way too many. But even one or two of the right goals not conceded and we could be looking at a title. Bloody what ifs again

35-40 really needs to be the upper limit of goals against next season. 50 is just way too high. We wont score 100 every year and even when we do it doesn't guarantee a title.

Theres very few teams we could hand pick to be playing city tonight.Villa probably wouldn't be in most peoples top 18.

Steve Clarke is too good to go back to being a defensive coach, but I agree that before we go spending money, we should at least explore all the options we currently have. Flanagan has shown that decent options do exist in the squad if given a chance

The defence are being scapegoated somewhat too.

At one stage the last night, there was 8 players ahead of the ball. Alot of it has to do with our style of play, it's very very attacking leaving defenders stranded.

A few slight tweaks in midfield could do wonders.

Our approach was totally different when Clarke was there.

It was all very rigid. Suarez used to be left isolated up front with no support whatsoever. The likes of Adam and Spearing rarely ventured past the halfway line. Downing passed everything backways.

As a unit, the team was much more defensive with little adventure.

if it's 1-0 Villa after 45 minutes, I can only imagine what this place will be like.

Probably a bit of a step back for Clarke but you'd never know, it's hard to gauge how good he is as a manager considering the West Brom mess. He might come back if we were looking for an assistant manager but I doubt we're in the market for one of those.

Hyppia is the obvious option and would be great to see him back but would his skills as a player translate well into a defensive coach. And would Rodgers be willing to give Hyypia much control over that aspect of the team.

It'll be full of people crying waiting for the inevitable 3 goal city comeback to just happen already.

If Villa were 1-0 up in the 93rd minute when only 3 minutes of injury time I'd still consider a sneaky bet on City to win.

Why would Hyppia be the 'obvious option'?

He has just been a manager, why would he go back to being a defensive coach?
It just reeks of being a sentimental appointment.

    Same for Steve Clarke.
It should be easy to get a defensive coach from anywhere and they don't have to have links with the club, they have to be the best person for the job.
