They only realised that Cardiff's runway was too short when the aircraft was below 5,000ft. They had forgotten to check. As to why it went all the way back to Shannon I don't know. Not too much further than some of the main U.K airports they could have gone to but doesn't really matter I guess..

Cool - STN I think is it's main base but easy to see why it'd be in DUB too.

AAL87 turned around around 10:30UTC this morning. Due fuel leak. Wasn't too serious though. Still had to burn more fuel on his way back to London, hence the drop to FL270.

Look back at a Saturday evening mid-summer and compare then. Insane amount of traffic to/from the Canaries.

Please do elaborate on this. I think you are over glamourising unions and their power, why on earth would they want so many flights together surely they would want them spread out to keep their members employed not bunched together to over work them.

Are you talking about the canaries to Scandinavia flights. It's more likely just fits in the operators schedules, the tour agents requirements and the customers requests to leave late and fly mostly through the night. It's not unusual that certain countries get particular change over days of the week in resorts. Very common in sun and ski destinations.

    No, it's completely normal.

Here's is what it can be like at just one of the Canaries airports (Las Palmas):
