Cheers, OB. I wasn't aware they had one. Does "engineering support" translate as MOL taxi in bus lane??:D

lol it wouldn't surprise me but don't often see it on flightradar, good catch. MOL is actually on primetime tonight at 2235,RTE1.

It dissappered because MLAT cover runs out just on from that point over the irish sea. Fr24 are looking for people to host MLAT receivers to expand coverage in Europe.

anyone wanna volunteer for dublin? :p

Any idea what this guy is up to? He was outbound only a few moments ago, looks like either a test flight, or he is returning to Weston.

from MYOB - "there's no MLAT coverage in Ireland yet on FR24 I believe."

    from FR24 website - "MLAT
In some regions with coverage from several FR24-receivers we also calculate positions of aircraft with the help of Multilateration (MLAT), by using a method known as Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA). By measuring the difference in time to receive the signal from aircraft with an older ModeS-transponder, it's possible to calculate the position of these aircraft. Four FR24-receivers or more, receiving signals from the same aircraft, are needed to make MLAT work. That means that MLAT coverage can only be achieved above about 10000-20000 feet as the probability that signal can be received by four or more receivers increases with increased altitude.

MLAT coverage is today limited to some parts of Europe, but expanding fast.
    "

    - Anyone know how do you setup for MLAT coverage in Ireland? Do you need a ADS-B receiver to start with or is that a separate item?

I'm just thinking out loud here.....

Will an ADS-B receiver provide MLAT reliably? If it will then won't a minimum of four (in different locations) be required?

I also note that Ireland is not in the priority list.

I'm up to putting myself forward for this but not a fan of climbing ladders. Gable end house about 50m or so above sea level.

    They need multiple.

The priority list is areas without even decent ADS-B coverage to begin with, MLAT coverage seems to be being rolled out in areas with good ADS-B mostly. The US has the FAA data, we don't.

    Fair play Mech,

I reckon by about 2015 your upstairs is going to be converted into a fully functioning ATC tower, complete with spiny roundy RADAR.

1000ft unless the area has little or no radar coverage and then it's 2000ft. The North Atlantic uses RVSM so it's 1000ft.

He won't need the radar head he has ADSB. Just needs a few velux windows.

Quoted from another forum. Posted today,

    _______________________________________________________________________________
"We now have a new batch of 1000 FR24 receivers and we have also improved and automatized much of our "Free equipment process" which means that we can process more applications in a shorter time.

If you can offer a good antenna location and want to host our free FR24 receiver please apply on http://www.flightradar24.com/free-ads-b-equipment

Our goal is to ship about 200 units per month from October 2013 and about 300 units per month from January 2014!"

Looks like a good time to apply if your in a position to HONESTLY help.

I would be interested in locking out the "usual local freq" on my feed for an hour, and just generally scanning the rest of the airband freq in order to see how far away we can copy an aircrafts transmissions. By using the call sign heard and flight radar 24 we should be able to get a max distance.

anyone willing to listen in and help find the aircraft?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,124 ✭✭✭Mech1

My feed going "Distant" at Midnight for 1 hr, Let me know if you hear and find on flight radar 24 anything far away.

This was Citation 525A M-FLYI inbound to Weston but it was vectored miles out to the west by Dublin ATC to separate it from traffic on finals to r/w 10 @ DUB.

From Dublin it is easy to pick up aircraft transmissions well into the UK and, in the days when position reports were made by radio, I have heard aircraft over such points as Glasgow, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Berry Head (Devon). There is of course a direct correlation between an aircraft's height and how far away transmissions from it will be received.

We need 4 so I'll put my name forward if you think you can mount the antenna.

My gable end is difficult to get to thanks to an extension with a 12.5 degree roof. See image.

Great. I've ladders here that I'm minding for a friend so you won't need to transport yours.

Do I request the gear from FR24 as per ADS-B?

yes, give a good reason / discription in your popup box that you gotta fill out, tell them that your hoping to cover MLAT and you wanna be one of the 4 needed around Dublin.

I have also applied for the 'free-be' FR24 box, need to get up in the attic at the weekend to take a few photos of the view, yes they want the see if there are obstructions, high ground, trees etc that would affect the reception. I am on fairly ground so should be OK he north of the DUB.
The decoder itself is a version of the 'Beast' this is good as its the best out there, out performs all others.

How long did it take for FR24 to get back to you? Did you ask for ADS-B or MLAT (or both)?

    Where are you located?

If the 4 providers are very close together will it be a problem?

They came back within 48 hours, no need to ask for ADSB/MLAT as this will happen automatically once the system is up and running, don't forget the data for MLAT can be coming from multiple locations e.g Dublin, Belfast, IOM etc to get a fix on traffic around DUB, I'm not too far north of EIDW.

I've had no contact from FR24 since my initial request last Wednesday (2/10/2013).

Airbus Guppy out north of Norwich at the moment - 451 knots, didn't think that beast would reach such speed...

Edit - what's the easiest way to insert screen shots like above?

Have a look at this microsoft link on how to do a print screen. It has a video as well.

Once you have the image/screen shot you want to upload, when you reply in the thread, scroll down to 'manage attachments', click it, choose file (top left),
browse to the location, select the file, click Open, (returns to the small box), then click Upload.

when the file uploads via the 'manage attachments' box, underneath 'choose file' you should see 'Current attachments', and your 'file name'.

Click on your 'file name' which should open up in a new tab.
Copy the URL (full address name) at the top https://us.v-cdn.net/6034073/uploads/attachments/335517/123123.jpg

Now go back to your Boards reply box and the menu across the top of the reply has a button labelled 'Insert Image', click this and a small box opens up, 'Please enter the URL of your image', paste in your copied link here and click OK, it should place your image code directly into the thread reply box with something like:

    IMGhttps://us.v-cdn.net/6034073/uploads/attachments/543789/275149.jpg

Thats it ! just then submit your reply.

PS: You can always link your images from an external images website, but I don't use that method.

Thannks DieselPowered, sorry I couldn't be of more help in finding the Baluga!:o. Will trawl back through the replay later to see what he was up to - another one left Toulouse this morning and landed in Manchester, so they're obviously shipping large parts around.

Some interesting goings on north of Bremen in Germany - civilian Skyhawk and Lear jet look like they're practicing. Presume for an air show?
