Would be getting a bit out of hand paying 30m for him I think

If we try and get a top midfielder after what's stopping the other club using that figure as a measure and saying they want double.

    Hopefully under 20m

I think we'll need to get over the fear of overpaying quite quickly this summer, regardless of who is in charge.

Every club will know we're well desperate and will be after record fees for players, and with no CL on offer, we're likely going to have to accept :/

300 k a week for Rooney has set the bar for wages!

Don't let Juventus see those Wilson gifs.

    They need a good striker

They can have Van Persie in exchange for Vidal and Pogba.

Yes for players who prove themselves over many years and dedicate their careers to United.

He's surely the most lethal striker we've had in the youth academy in a long, long time?

Last time I was so impressed by a performance in the U21's was Federico Macheda away to Newcastle in 2008, he bagged a hat-trick that day, and 4 days later he came off the bench against Aston Villa and scored THAT goal. Next week he deflected a Scholes shot in for a goal but during the celebration he mysteriously vanished, never to be seen again.

Ain't going to work like that I'm afraid though is it. Players better than Rooney that ye want to sign are going to say I want more than him!

Just came on to post that. Gutted for him

Felt he was going to shine at this world cup. Hopefully gets back and strong...tremendous midfielder.

have watched him a lot with Roma this season and its an awful shame we didnt sign him. It was said at the time that he was nearly a done deal but Moyes didnt fancy him . He would walk into our team

I'm intrigued by all these experts on exactly what players will and won't move for.

It does work like that though. If a player proves he's better than Rooney at United then he might get paid more. It's also about how strong of a brand a player is. Rooney is Englands best and most marketable player. His value is greater than just what he does on the pitch.

It's extremely unlikely that we'll be signing players better than Rooney. Even if everything was going swimmingly at the club, signing players better than Rooney would be unlikely.

Any player who comes in and demands to get more or equal to Rooney who has been at the club almost a decade and done so much for the club is probably not a player we'll be looking to sign

It's not that players will want the same as Rooney. But I think they will want relative to Rooney. So a player who might usually have gotten 100k a year will now look at how badly United need him, and how Rooney got an inflated contract and look to inflate their own. Even if it's only 50% more! it all adds up.

Everyone United will go negotiating with this summer, the power will be in their hands...

Rooney's contract is no more inflated than it was when we signed RVP or Mata though.

Didn't the BBC report that the slight delay in the Rooney deal was to iron out some image rights issues, and a clause stipulation that he is to be the highest paid player at the club.

First I've heard of that, sounds like rubbish tbh, players don't sign for City and quote Yaya Toures reported wages.

Rooneys contract which for what we know was just a 50k pay rise shouldn't mean anything to incoming players.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,181 ✭✭✭Crimson King

Think the press came out with a lot of rubbish at the time, showing they knew nowt. Sure I read on one forum that Suarez MUST be at least the highest equal paid player in the league so when Rooney signed his new deal Suarez's wages had to be raised to follow suit. Absolute nonsense and just the press talkng cr*p again tbh.

But it isn't even a 50k pay rise in terms of salary.

His weekly wage at united is the same now as it was at the start of the season. the extra 50k being reported is the value being placed on the new sponsorship deals the United commercial team will gain for Rooney as part of the new agreement (previously Rooneys team would have been responsible for his personal sponsorship deals, now the United commercial team will do this as well - and our commercial team rocks).

This is total bollocks. It's one thing being in the CL, it's another thing having the ability to win it. With the investment made in the summer we will have a team with the capacity to win it.

A player of 23-25 years of age is not going to care about missing CL for 1 season if they can see the team being build is one that could challenge for winning it in 3 years time.

Maybe Moyes isn't the right man for the job but you can bet United will be a far more attractive proposition than most teams out there.

Yes they are going to care about missing out on CL.
They are not going to be picking out a team 7th as potential CL winners down the road, just because they won it in 2008 with a different squad.

Yes money is important, but on balance United will need to outspend their rivals for top players.

Mata, good as he is, was surplus to requirements at Chelsea and more importantly nobody else came in for him.
At the time he signed grabbing 4th place was still a possibility, with RVP and Rooney coming back from injury etc.

Such a pity they made such a mess of last summers window, as well as Moyes ridiculous team selections

Moutinho, Rodriguez, Falcao - all signed for Monaco without CL football.

Man City signed Yaya Toure, David Silva, Edin Dzecko, Carlos Tevez, Mario Balotelli and Robinho without CL football.

I know it's goal.com but I wonder what people make of this? http://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/2892/transfer-zone/2014/03/11/4676017/-

RvP has a trigger clause which lets him speak to other clubs if we finish outside the top 4??

A team that only got promoted from Ligue 2 in the summer.

Regarding Kroos, I think that he's holding out for the bigger deal from Bayern, but I think he could be waiting for it. Bayern have a very good financial plan in place, and won't be taken to the cleaners. But I think they will come to an agreement before the WC. Is Ribery still their highest paid player?

I'd imagine it's a clause in the same bracket as allowing Rooney to pick what players United sign.

Ribery and Robben matched highest at 165k. United are offering Kroos more than that.

If it is down to money United have a good chance, as I don't think Bayern will break wage structure to pay Kroos the same as their top earners, never mind more. However, I wouldn't be surprised to see Kroos accept a lower contract at Bayern - remain one of the top players in arguably the best team in the world right now - rather than take the gamble of moving to United (gamble in terms of on the field success).

There is also the very real likelihood that should Kroos actually look to leave in the summer, other big hitting CL sides will come in for him.

I do think United can make big signings this summer, but I do hope we have a large list of targets drawn up because getting our first choices is going to be very difficult. Money and a hard sell on the 'project' at hand will be required, and other clubs can offer similar/more with CL football already.

Ribery is on over £200k a week afaik.

Despite all his talk and rocking the boat,Kroos has only missed 2 games this season so his value to the team is apparent. It won't be just a matter of here's some cash, welcome to Manchester.

I'd love to see him at United plus the reports of us lodging a bid for Carvahlo are good signs that we have learned from last Summer's fiasco.
Moyes has said that he wants transfers done early,we could be in for a busy time once the season is over.

Imagine next season with a midfield of Carvahlo & Kroos,no more of this 'forward five yards, back ten yards, sideways then long diagonals" that have plagued our game.

    defensive midfielder.

From what I have read he has great positioning and reading of the game. Good tackler, big solid lad.

not too quick (though some dispute this), picks up more than his share of yellows and passing is not great. from what I gather he won't be instigating and creating wonderful attacks. He stops the opposition, and gives the ball to a team mate - that seems to be his role.

Would be a good addition to the squad based on that, imo. Could be great alongside a player like Kroos (*Swoon*) giving him more freedom to attack, with Carvalho sweeping and covering behind.

Looks like Baron Capital bought nearly 25% of all the United shares available on the NYSE. Not the start of a takeover bid according to Andy Green.
