What was the incident Tommy Walsh should have been sent off for?

Punch with a closed fist. A sure-fire sending off offence.

Gavin very poor overall.. Clearly left too much go on both sides. Clare's frees in 2nd half seemed a little soft at times... Didn't like shefs acting the ape for some1 of his stature in the game he should just get on with it like every1 else and constant bickering to ref.. Walsh.. Well yet another unpunished dirty stroke. Overall I think dryer conditions underfoot will show Clare devastating speed in attack more.. P.s Morey was superb.

I was at the match today, great game of hurling for February, great to see Clare come out the right side of a 1 point game for a change. I thought our half back line was brilliant but our half forwards were brutal, great to see Davy make the hard call and take Tony Kelly off. I thought the full back line put in a great shift as well, when was the last time Kilkenny had 2 of full forward line taken off?

In regards to the Tommy Walsh incident, I haven't re-seen it, but it was a strike off the ball so I don't know how it wasn't a sending off, but with the Kilkenny lads wanting "manly" hurling I suppose it wasn't, why Shefflin was doing a gallop and questioning ever decision by the ref I don't know, surely he doesn't want a ref involved.

Personally, I thought Walsh's thing was never a sending-off. I would have classified it as a push, kind of thing that happens numerous times, wasn't much force in it... think he made a bit of a meal of it tbqh.

I wouldn't worry to much,KK had to go at this game and Clare had enough
Ta close it out, early days but I did enjoy watching it as an outsider, much
More than the Galway / dub game, two teams committed despite conditions
And in fairness the grounds held up well despite what was thrown at it this
    Last weeks

wouldnt be overly worried as a kk man, decent enough performance and out of the team that didnt start today only jj jackie tommy b hogan joyce mick fen mick rice tj r power r hogan and e murphy in the goals to come back,so no need to panic yet.

Obviously can't read too much into a February game but great stuff all the same. Over 10k at it too, hurling is alive and well in Clare. As a Meath man I'm jealous. 2 vital points in a very very tight division. I hope they don't change this league format or at most only allow 1 extra team into the top 2 divisions.

Very enjoyable game. Great result for Clare but Kilkenny won't be too worried either. Ref made some poor calls on both sides. Anyone see Henry's touch to control a high ball in the 2nd half? Absolute class! As a Clareman I was sure Tommy Walsh deserved a red card after seeing it live but after watching it at home it wasn't even a yellow - it was an open handed push and Conlon made the most of it.

Think we'll beat Dublin too next week which will more than likely assure safety for Division 1 status and anything after that then is a bonus.

would we not need to win at least three games for that? We won two last year as well and weren't safe...

Yea probably, but what I meant was if we have two from two we should pick up something in our last 3 games. If it's anything like last year then you're right - we'll need more than the 2 wins to be guaranteed.

agreed after watching the game back it was no yellow card, also henry sheflins point from under the seated stand in the first half was worth the admission fee in its self

How does shefflin get away with so much though. He was dancing in the refs face in the first half but he refused to bring the free in. Any other player and it's 10 yards in. Are refs afraid of him.

9 all ireland medals in his arse pocket, why not try gain a little advantage if possible with his status in the game.

Fair enough, but did the ref take the chance that my unce turned down?

Clare can thank the referee Brian Gavin for the win!

Clare over carried the ball with steps numerous times and got away with it today and were even awarded frees for doing so. One count was 11 steps by a Clare player and even Shefflin (little dance) complained near the sideline. A Clare man holds a Kilkenny man's hurl and gets a free in the first half. 4 times throughout the match a Clare man stood on the ball and the referee gave a throw in. As soon as the sliotar is caught between the legs of a Kilkenny man in the last 5 minutes of the match two frees were awarded to Clare. A free out and free in to Clare. A joke. Clare were awarded a free for every 50/50!

Blantant fouling by Clare players all day today and Brian Gavin let them away with it. Tommy Walsh should have been booked though and not Colin Fennelly. Tommy Walsh was foulded at the end of the match and should have been a free.

Other refs will not let Clare away with that level of presisant fouling.

Kilkenny were never going to win that match with Brian Gavin refereeing it. He was intent on Kilkenny loosing it from the start. He does not like Kilkenny.

Clare had 12 of their starting 15 from last year's All-Ireland Final today. Podge Collins came on in the second half. Kilkenny were missing Richie Hogan, Richie Power, T.J. Reid, Michael Fennelly, J.J. Delaney, Brian Hogan, Kieran Joyce and Michael Rice. Jackie Tyrell, Aiden Fogarty and Tommy Walsh came on in the second half.

We will see what happens when Clare met a full strength Kilkenny team later in the League or Championship.

Clare were out of the game for the last 10 minutes of the first half. Kilkenny had three goal chances at the end of the first half.

we will see what happens when Clare have a fully fit team later in year, not bad for a team only a few weeks back in training,Kilkenny have to stop relying on the old guard and give youth its chance

same with Gouch and Kieran Donaghy for Kerry in football, always get away with roaring and abusing referees

This rule is never enforced, and players know it. Annoys the SH!te out of me.
Occurs dozens of times in every match.

I'm play in the backs so I suppose it would do !

Not going too well in Parnell Park so far, trailing 1-14 to 0-12

Didn't go too well this week!

We were poor under the high ball and generally out muscled all day. Davy is right when he says we are a few weeks behind.

i would be lying if i had said i could have seen this coming this morning before we set out for dublin after the contrasting resultes last week

you could argue the point that we were flattered to only lose by 6 points yet at the same time we had two good goal chances in the last 5mins by totts and john conlon evan one of those could have had a different out look on the scoreboard. but the worry down the other end would have been how soft the dublin goals went in , david mac got badly caught out for the first and dispite the excelant finish for there 2nd goal the defending was a bit on the division 2 side of things

liam rush gave us all something to think about for the rest of the league with the amount of high ball he won , he cleaned tony kelly today and that is never a good sign whether its febuary or june,

one thing that was very noticeable was the lack of sharpness, first touch and even fitness levels were far lower this week then last although john conlon, patch o connor and seadna morey look miles ahead of the rest in this department

suthcliff, dottsie, liam rushe and alan mccrabbe were all outstanding for dublin and we are a long way off there level at the moment looks like podge did the wise dessision and head over to london with the footballers, the one crittisium i would have of the management is we have yet to realy give any of the squad players much of a look in jack browne, paul flannagan , totts o connell all have 2 all ireland u 21 medels in there back pockets and get very little game time, i dont know what the story with connor cleary or nial deasy if they are both injured but suerly today was the type of game to throw some of them in at the deep end

Davy said in the interview after that they are about 10 weeks behind last year in terms of fitness.

However, Davy is a master at deflecting any criticism if the players, so not sure what to believe.
Might be time for biscuits in his front room ?! :)

Seriously ? Donaghy is well able to mouth off alright and like most Kerry fans, I wish he'd stop and do something more constructive with his time.

The only result of his verbals is that he rarely, if ever, gets a free even when he is blatantly fouled so thats hardly "getting away with it".

I've been watching Colm Cooper for many years and have never once seen him roar or abuse a referee. Certainly he'll may make a point to a ref if he feels there has been some issue with a free or lack thereof (as many players do), but to suggest he goes off roaring and abusing officials as a matter of form is well wide of the mark.

On to the topic in hand, Clare were well beaten yesterday. Interesting to see how they respond to the result.

Full-back line seemed to be in all sorts of trouble, half-forward line was basically cleaned out. Dublin were obviously out to redeem themselves after the pathetic display the week before... Clare may have been tired by their efforts, but they were never really in the game.

Dominated physically and in the air. Might be a bit of a wake-up call for some players, can't rest on your laurels... loads of young, hungry hurlers vying for places can only be a good thing though.

No Cathal McInerney again? Not even on the bench? If he's not being used for the hurlers, he could be a class footballer!

he is a class footballer probably the best in the county , but in fairness he is a class hurler got probably only an hour in total of inter county action last year maybe less and scored something like 2-4

most players spend there entire careers trying to win an all ireland and end up with nothing......paul flanagan and niall deasy have one each despite the fact they have yet to make there inter county debut.

i would'nt worry too much about the the result yesterday but in fairness this time last year we were blooding several players that played key roles last summmer sticking to the same team every week makes no sense when the talent is there coming through

I'd imagine we'll see changes now though. Davy probably went for broke on Sunday to try and win and rest his 1st team then for a while but Dublin were good and would have beaten most.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Regional Midwest Moderators Posts: 24,053 Mod ✭✭✭✭Clareman

Sunday was a brutal performance for all concerned, the team never got going and the management just didn't know what to do. With the majority of our players playing Fitzgibbon during the week I can't understand why there wasn't wholesale changes made, for example, Tony Kelly was hurler of the year and played a blinder mid-week for LIT, why not give him the weekend off and give someone else a chance?

true although he did give a very nervous league debut to bobby duggen halfway through the second half. would like to see tots start the next day too he deserves it at this stage

was surprised with the slight surprise from people after the game , many people seeing dublin as the weekest team in the group.
too much was read into the galway game , if they build on last year they will be major contenders for the all ireland ,
