Wham were played not that long ago on the Saturday night slot, Ritchie and Ritchie played Eddy Grant last week! They just played Abba Waterloo tonight. I have tried my best to listen to phantom over the years but they clearly don't want me as a listener. Back to my trusty iPod...

I totally missed the point! I also missed the point of them playing Eddy Grant last week, do enlighten me...
Clearly they are having a laugh, I'm sorry I didn't hang around to get the joke but my ears hurt when subjected to I don't Want To Dance or Warterloo, or the other rubbish they have been playing while having a laugh! It's an alternative music station. Play alternative music or give the license to someone else who will. They had their chance, they blew it, let someone else who loves alternative music have a go.

Maybe people just don't like Alternative music, or they prefer the mainstream stuff and the people who do are too minute to have a whole station dedicated to them.... Maybe we are over analysing this a bit too much...

Did you listen to the whole show? Did you intend on listening? Perhaps I should have just read a couple of words from your post and reply based on that? I suggest you look at the playlist of last nights show and see if you can work it out.

Irish commercial radio = inane linking to crap playlisting. Why bother anymore, because after this I won't.

Let him at it. I turned on Phantom last week to listen to some decent music. They were playing Eddy Grant I don't want to dance, I turned it off. I tuned in last night, again in the naive hope that they would be playing some decent music, they played Abba Waterloo. I turned it off. Which bit of this am I missing?
Add to that Wham and a host of other rubbish music Phantom have been trying to ram down an ever decreasing listenership's ears and Ritchie should have a good idea why he is where he is. Tweet that!

Some great tunes in there for sure, and why do you think I keep on checking in on Phantom? Because you do play some decent stuff. But sorry Eddy Grant, Abba, wham et all is having a laugh.
I am not on my own, your losing listeners for a reason.

If you change the station every you hear a song you dislike, there won't be any Radio Show in the World you are happy with. It's just a bit of fun.

I think the Richies are entitled to have a laugh in their remaining shows, for their benefit and the benefit of their regular listeners.

And that's very unfortunate. But I think the point trying to be made is that the station is down to 15k listeners and the suggestion is that the playlist is not as 'cutting edge' as either it was or as (some) people expect it to be.

Listeners are the only viable currency of a radio station. 15k of them it would seem is not a commercial proposition. Considering they were nearly at 40K in 2010 - something has turned the people off the station.

You can't expect to like every single song a station plays. I stream phantom while I'm at work and if a song comes on that I really cant stand I just mute it for a few minutes.

I'm disappointed about the lay offs. I really think local radio is important, especially stations that aren't simply pandering to the masses.

I do it myself sometimes when there is a song on that I don't like but I don't judge a show based on one song. The RnR show is three hours long. They play stuff I don't like, stuff I do like and stuff I've never heard before. I've probably used Soundhound on that one show than on any other station I'd listen to. I also bought my last album based on hearing a song on the show.

Cause: New management imposed much stricter playlist conditions from 7am-7pm. ie. far less songs and much heavier rotation of "mainstream" popular songs with vague indie-ness, more emphasis on talk and "banter".

Results: Feck all listeners coming from other stations, lots of longtime listeners turning off.

Solution: Cut the yapping for most of the day, stop playing sh1t like Kings of Leon and Kodaline every hour, let the presenters choose what they want.

    Outcome: More listeners coming back.

Thank you, I'll start as CEO or at least Programme Director next week ;)

All I'm saying is, rightly or wrongly, if people looking for alternative music turn on phantom and wham are being played or Chico being interviewed, its not much of a stretch to imagine they might tune out. If the average teenybopper turned on spin and autechre or machine head were playing, they'd do the same.

I really liked the two richies and its **** that its going under, but it makes no sense to blame the audience. Probably makes no sense to blame the Djs for the most part either, I think their hands are tied in mist cases.

I'm not blaming the listener but you can't say a show only plays crap if you only turn on and turn off straight away.

Yup! If I turn on an alternative music station then I have an expectation that I will hear alternative music not mainstream pap. Ritchie and Ritchie can have a laugh if they want, I've no problem with that, and the best of luck to them, but I and several thousand listeners reserve the right to turn off. We did!

It's a shame what has been done to a once great radio station.

How is it not alternative? I haven't heard those songs on spin/fm104/98fm/2fm/today fm other than on look back shows. Do you think turning on and hearing waterloo that suddenly it's larry gogans golden hour?

I was referring to the last line of your post about not blaming the audience. I wasn't really saying you were blaming them just that people shouldn't judge a show by one track.

Phantom ,for some reason have turned into Nova, 6 months ago.....i turned away from Nova because of the heavy repetition, now Nova have sorted that to some degree, but Phantom have adopted that idea lately which is why i switched away...i'm guessing that nova have taken a huge amount of listeners away from 105.....
