i was only taking pudseys price as i don't know current steer price. 3.90 is a fair depressing price . is 4 available for QA underage?

cant see any upward movement, there are loads of cattle in the system

quoted 4 this day last week for 29mnth QA steers - then got the sh*te cut out of them for overfat. Expensive mistake to make.

Don't know if it's dropped since then

Here we go again, Bob talking down prices.

I was working on price from Indo last Tuesday not sure of bullock or heifer prices on the ground at present. In general would expect Fresians to grade between O= and O- so about 20c off the base if you could not get a flat price. After that it is how you think they will preform over 12-14 months.

Quoted 3..80 flat for U/R bulls under 420kg next week how sad is that! !!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,920 ✭✭✭freedominacup

Got 3.05 for HO culls yesterday. 380kg carcass. 1100plus after deduction is not too bad for culls.

That seems to be the top of the going rate at present. I see the IFA had a meeting with the factory's now that fella's will have no choice but to sell as they hit 24 months. TBH I think this is a bit of a face saving excerise. In reality they are not complaining to mthe competition authority.

Looking at through put so far this year it is about 8K ahead of same time last year running 3K/week higher. This will dampen any price rise for the next while. Factory's biggest issue may well be that because of feed costs finishers may be slow to refill sheds for May/June Bob may have a better handle on this that me.

The bigger Dairy men will be offloading stock to free up sheds and Labour ahead of calving season. I can't see any light untill March at the earliest.

THe only light I see is from an oncoming train and we are in a tunnell with no way of getting off the track. Cannot see prices riising before Christmass and not sure which Christmass it will be

Sent bullocks to the factory last week at a base of 4:00/4:10 for R/U grades.
Weighed and graded well but like everyone, dissapointed with the price - well back on this time last year.

As always, when i kill a few, i try and buy back in a few. The boss man picked up a couple of stores in tullamore mart today. was hoping to pick up a few bargains with the slump in factory prices. Not much difference in the store cattle prices compared to this time last year.
Trade was good - a few northern buyers buying up alot of stock too.

why sell flat with good grading cattle?

Mart price is still strong in my view given current and future price of meat

Sold poor O grade cattle today (steers) @3.60 per kg, told that the factories have any amount of bulls available to kill so price will be remaining low. I think this article sums up the position http://www.agriland.ie/news/young-bull-issue-must-addressed-meat-plants/

Tis boats we need more than trains. To get rid of as many bulls as possible and every Friesian bull calf born this spring. We'd see then how fussy the factories would be in two years time

Problem is jack the cycle will just start again and fr bull calves will be making €200 again and the factories will clean farmers clocks again in 2018. I'll be doing them for the next two years as they are on the farm and we've done them fairly regularly. That'll probably be that though as we should be fairly well stocked with dairy stock by then.

How cheap can friesan calves be bought at the moment? Are they worth a gamble or a year old friesans better buying?

Was just thinking about what Pudsey was saying the other day about 380-400kg fr bullocks being goodish value at the €600 mark and I think it's very true, I'd buy them before calves

Unless you have lots of time and a good knowledge of rearing calves this will be a risky investment. You would need to vaccinate for pneumonia and coccissidoses.

I dont think there will be any shortage. friesains selling anything up to 200 last week and herefords going to near 400 for calves.Do ome people never learn? I sold 3, 330 kg hereford (bucket fed) bulls recently (12 month olds). two 600 and 0ne 675. They were far better calves than what was selling for 400 last weekend.

Couple of lads around here bought calves 2 yrs ago I spent more time sorting out their sh1te than doing my own work for 10 weeks. Told them never again if they bought calves they could sort them themselves. As for wanting them all 200 will do me.
