Just got an email saying that if i dont give UTV €25 a year, they will delete my email, as i am no longer a customer of theirs.

Its going to take e ****ing ages to transfer everything to GMail now.

We're upgrading the security of all our customers' email accounts. But to activate the changes we need your help.

    It's simple:

If you are a UTV Connect customer
and want to keep your UTV Connect email address, click here to reset your password. It's quick, easy and free. You just need to have your account details to hand.

If you are no longer a UTV Connect customer
    you have three options:

    1. To keep your UTV Connect email address for just £ 20/ € 25 a year, click here and we'll call you back to set up your email only account.

    2. To return to UTV Connect for your home phone and broadband and to enjoy your free email account again, click here and we'll call you back to discuss our latest offers.

    3. If you no longer require your UTV Connect email, you don't need to do a thing.
Please note that due to our security upgrade, all UTV Connect email accounts that have not responded to this message BEFORE 1ST MARCH 2014 will be deleted.

This is not a rogue email and has been sent securely and officially by UTV Connect.

are they allowded to do this?

i think this is pretty shoddy customer service to be honest. I wonder can i take this up with comreg?

What exactly are you going to say to comreg? A company I used to use for my internet no longer let me use one of their services without paying for it?

Personally I dont see anything wrong with what they are doing to be honest.

Why would you think that UTV would manage your email account for free, if you are no longer a customer? Google will certainly give you a "free" email account, but they will target you with advertising, track your mails and who knows what else - nothing is for free!

That said, you can point your Gmail account at the UTV mail server and get it to download your mail without too much bother.

Bite the bullet and set up Gmail as your main address, it will just get more and more important as the years roll on and Google integrate more and more of their services more tightly, I did it with my old Yahoo account the first time I got an Android phone, glad I did now as the people who stuck with Yahoo are seriously pissed off with the service sine they started making pointless changes, everything in Gmail just works all the time especially the way everything syncs across desktop>Google Drive (way better than Dropbox)>Smartphone...

But they are deleting the account so I need change all my accounts to my Gmail address.

I use adblock so not really bothered about Google hitting me with ads anyway.

Ireland.com did this already and got away with it.

Exactly - and that was originally a pay for service, but when the Irish Tourist Board grabbed the Ireland.com domain, they decided they were not continuing the email service.
And to the OP - yes it's a PITA having to advise your correspondents of your change of email address!

Set up your new account, then set up an auto responder providing your new email address and advising people of the change.

Monitor your account over the next month and cancel all subscription emails (or ignore them) and resubscribe with the new address..

    Its not that bad..

Not quite so simple. If you have moved your utility bills to electronic statements, you will have to log on and change your destination email address yourself or talk to a Customer Service Rep

Be best just to move to GMail. They're the bets IMO for email.

Unless you get locked out of it. Then you're in trouble.

If you're sending an email to all your correspondents, put all their email addresses as a Bcc and leave To and CC blank.

Out of all the free ones, Gmail is probably the best if you don't mind the ads.

Outlook.com is far better than Gmail

UTV mail is poxy, I've had an account for years since I was a broadband customer a long while back. Glad this has happened, it's given me the kick in the backside to move the rest of my subs off that account to my Gmail.

    Never used UTV mail thankfully,

Back in 1998 I bought myname.com and since then although I've switched e-mail providers 3 times I've always maintained a nice handy e-mail address, not bad for 10e a year...well worth it!

I'm in the same boat as the OP, and while I didn't expect my free email with UTV to last forever (actually, mine is a dna.ie account from an old ISP they acquired), the email they sent out said we had until March 1.

However, unless something else strange is happening, it appears my account no longer works as of tonight.

OP and anyone else with UTV email - are you still able to access your account?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 526 ✭✭✭silverski

It looks like they have already begun to delete email accounts.

We lost our 3 main email address this morning.

Its bad as we use these daily and have done so for 12 years now.

they did say on the website that we had until March 1st.

I have to wait another 2 hours until they open.

Its crap that they are only available 8am till 8pm

    Not happy.

But very willing to pay, perhaps this will allow a better customer service.

    regards
    Silverski

    Hi all,

Just got on the phone to UTV and Guess what, they have no clue as to why email accounts are not working.

    This sounds all to familiar

They have promised to call back

    Will wait and see.

This is most annoying as it's my main email account for work. I can't even remember how I got an email address, as I don't recall ever buying an utvinternet service.

Up to my eyes in work today and no email.:(

    Its probably just a glitch.

With any free service you should keep a local back up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,188 ✭✭✭Comhrá

My UTV email is also not working today. Tried phoning 1890 926 000 tech help but gave up after holding for nearly 15 mins.

Reset my passwords last Tue. and had email up till late last night.

Come on UTV, you need to do a bit better!

Seems more than a glitch. Not only can't I log on, but email sent to my address bounces with a "this is not a valid mailbox" message.

Agreed on the second point, which is why I've always used POP mail.

Just checked and I see that the UTV mail service is now back up and running. It works for me now after it was unaccessable last night.

Same here but rang support line and a recorded message says the have a problem. So will wait and see what happens.

I've used the service for about 12 or 13 years and only moved late last year to get an efibre account with a different provider.
But I really don't mind paying €25.00 a year to continue with the service and have changed my password and requested a call to set up payment and have heard nothing. If they just deleted the accounts without calling then that's not good but it looks like a screw up of some sort, hopefully...

    we shall see.

It's back up and running but there's no email. I usually have around 50 emails.
