why would iran want an embassy in their country stuffed with " paddys " ?

Why would 'paddys' want to be there? No booze or hang sangwiches to be had.

You mistaken to think that an Irish Embassy to the Holy See has anything to do with religion.

It is to do with putting Irish diplomats in a position to advance Irish interests on a world stage.

A different position from the lads we already have down the road in the embassy to Italy?

This is the same person that claims over 1 million Irish Catholics go to church every week. I doubt you're going to see a lot of solid evidence to claims.

I've yet to see anything to suggest that this isn't the case.

You don't go outside much, do you?
According to the 2011 Census (Wikipedia) there were 3,861,335 catholics in the Republic of Ireland.

According to this report (Practice and Belief amongst Roman Catholics in Ireland - by the Bishops Conference, academically led and funded by EU Framework grants) - Fig 1 shows that, in 2009/10, 42.1% of Irish catholics attended mass once per week and 6% attended more than once a week.
    http://www.catholicbishops.ie/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Practice-and-Belief-among-Catholics-in-the-Republic-of-Ireland.pdf

So 48.1% of 3,861,335 is 1,857,302 people at least once a week.

Now, even allowing a (HUGE) margin of error that's comfortably in excess of 1 million people at mass each week in the Republic alone.

On the contrary. I go outside and experience things outside of my comfort zone to better inform myself. Perhaps those who can't believe the figures above should stick their heads into a catholic church some sunday morning.

    Yes

Oh well. That's that so. The one diplomat we station outside the Vatican to them, I expect big things from him. Permanent member of the security council etc.

As long as this doesn't cost the state a single cent, I see no issue.

    It will though.

Ah so pissing away money is the government's game? I would've done it for half the cost

Until 5 or 6 years ago, I regularly went to mass. I'd have difficulty believing even a quarter of the people in my area went on a weekly basis, and I'm from a strongly catholic rural area.

im from a rural area too , a quarter seems low to me , twenty years ago you could count on one hand the number of people who didn't go each week , id say close to 50% of people in much of rural Ireland go to mass each week

First page that came up on a Googling for church attendance figures:
In 2011, it was reported that only about 18 per cent of Irish people in the Republic were regularly attending Mass, indicating a wide margin between those who claim to be Catholic and who are actively practicing.

What part of my analysis don't you agree with? Do you have some evidence to suggest that your hunch that less than a quarter go to mass?

Even if you take the 25% figure as correct. That's still 965,333 people.

So why is it so hard to believe that my claim that 1 million people attend mass each week??

Such an idiotic waste of money. It's not a real country, why the feck do we need an embassy for these people?

new Zealand doesn't have an embassy in Ireland either

Yep, there are actually more countries that run their diplomatic missions to Ireland though foreign embassy, usually in London, than there are countries with embassies in Ireland. We are only a country of 4.5 million people after all.

I followed that link but it just says "In 2011 it was reported...." no indication where the 18% figure came from.

This report says 42.1% (plus 6% extra who attend more than once a week) http://www.catholicbishops.ie/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Practice-and-Belief-among-Catholics-in-the-Republic-of-Ireland.pdf

You keep mentioning that one survey that uses a sample group of 2000 people (and correct me if I'm wrong, I could very well be, but unlikely they counted every head in every church for a year)

If you think over a million people attend church a week, well... what's there to say to you? :o

So what if 2 million Irish people go to mass every week - why do we need an embassy in a mickey mouse country?

Let's call a spade a spade - The Vatican is not a real country.

Disneyland is more of a real country than Vatican City.

If we do send an ambassador to the Vatican should we get him to vent our concern regarding human rights in their "country".
No non Catholic can become head of state (Religious Discrimination)
No women can become head of state (Sexual Discrimination)
Not everyone has a vote in their elections.

It's a joke that in 2014 we still take any heed of their bullsh!t

Also from a rural area and the local church only has one mass on a Sunday compared to 3 masses on a Sunday 20 years ago.

If you can read this, you're too close!

How many masses will there be in 20 years when there are no priests?
    Hopefully none!

I was addressing a particular point raised. Many countries who have a tiny number of catholics have embassies with the Holy See.

Well, thats not a biased source at all.

Look at the academics behind it - UCD, Queens (I think) funded with EU Framework Programme monies. Robust enough I'd say.

Still doesn't explain the 'sample group of 2000' part...

You're taking something to be used as a very rough indicator of who attends church and trying to apply it to a whole country. Not working out here.

People have been foolishly predicting the demise of the RCC for millenia. They are constantly dissapointed.

So? Why do we? We're a secular country after all.

I'd fully expect a Flying Spaghetti Monster embassy to open in Italy too. It'd be stupid not to

Yes. Exactly like a political opinion poll. Extrapolating from a small set to get a national picture.
