Aside from the occasional Weather Forecast check, I never watch RTE. And I'd rather gouge out my eyes than endure anything with O'Carroll in it.

That Mrs Browns Boys got the highest ratings, speaks more about the remaining quality of TV production in general, more than most else I think - I can't really stand watching almost any actual TV now, and it doesn't seem to be getting better, just dying a slow death (with good quality shows mainly being found online).

Just the way it's going to go, while we slowly transition to watching stuff on the Internet exclusively, at our own leisure, instead.

I saw the show on Christmas (for the first time), and yes, it was pretty bad - good joke or two, but really they could do a lot better, if they could be arsed putting proper comedy script-writers onto it.

I'm totally perplexed that over 9 million in UK could watch that.

I think it taps into into two strong UK traditions: bawdiness and pantomime.

And, for whatever reasons, a lot of British people love Irish accents and find swearing funny.

I don't begrudge him anything. Its a fact he is stealing other comedians jokes which is the lowest thing you can do if you call yourself a comedian.

But if he wasn't successful, you wouldn't care.

i agree, i think its called snobbery!

where is the snobbery in calling dung for what it is.

Fair play to BOC, highest rated show on Christmas Day is actually some achievement. Love it or hate it he's onto a winner with Mrs Brown and as long as it continues to pull in large audiences how could you possibly question why the BBC or RTE would broadcast it.

As for the the OP's original question, I would agree that it is a bit much show the same episode 2 nights in a row in the primetime slot, but again lets wait for the rating figures to come in before we question RTE's decision.

Why it's just pure laziness by RTE the fee should be taken off them all this so they can pay their closeted workers is just so wrong

No doubt in my mind that this show is absolute dirt.

I accept that there is a large swathe of the population that don't see it that way. I assume they are all Brendan Grace fans.

Not really. I think it's a generational thing. My parents love his stuff and have been to his live show many times. In fact many years ago whilst on holidays down in Wexford we bumped in to Mr O Carroll and had a photo taken with him. It was around the time he had that rats tail hanging out of the back of his head.

Very affable bloke and I bear him no ill will. Doesn't mean I have to like his comedy stylings.

Linehan and Matthews did well in the UK with Fr Ted. Don't recall there being much begrudgery towards them.

Likewise Dylan Moran with Black Books (again with Linehan) and Chris O'Dowd now with Moone Boy (which picked up an Emmy nomination). Funny, eh?

Let's compare Moone Boy's depiction of Ireland with Mrs. Brown's Boys. :p

He did well enough in Ireland with the same ****e and people still hated him then as much as now. Nothing to do with doing well in the UK.

Arthur Matthews. Dara O Briain. Graham Linehan. Chris O'Dowd. Colm Meaney. There's tonnes more. Want to back up that statement with some facts?

I'm a firm, firm believer in us deep down being a begrudging nations of f***s, but typically when one of us breaks it big internationally, we do tend to get behind them a lot. Maybe not Bono or a younger Colin Farrell (I've found him very likeable in recent years as he's matured), but by and large we're hugely supportive of our international celebs.

Freud would have a field day! :pac:

The thing I hate the most about MBB and the morons that watch it is the fact that they think the actors bursting out laughing at the jokes is real, its not, its scripted, and they're not good enough at what they do to pull it off either, fcuking infuriating listening to my family pissing themselves laughing at this ****3, never thought something worse than Killnaskully would come along but here it is.

Why is it so popular? It just doesn't make sense...

Is most of the stuff in sitcoms not scripted? The whole thing presumes a suspension of credulity?

I watched a couple of episodes and didn't laugh once.

I heard people talking about how brilliant it is, so I watched another episode with people who like the show so as I'd know which parts were meant to be funny. I have a lot less time for the 2 people who I watched it with as I saw them cracking up laughing at something that I found as funny as a kick in the balls.

I usually just put stuff like that down to different people having different tastes in 'comedy', but I am afraid I cannot do that in the case of this show.

As far as I'm concerned anybody who finds it funny is a brain dead moron.

Of course they are but Im talking about the way in MBB in which they break the fourth wall over and over again by pretending a joke is so funny that the actor bursts out laughing at it and then presenting that as unscripted when it clearly is, they do it 4 or 5 times an episode, makes me want to smash the tv..

Irish person misunderstanding the word "begrudgery" is far more common I find

It's also extremely funny when they bump into a cameraman "accidentally" on set, and don't edit out the mistake for the final production - with hilarious consequences.

I can't hide my feelings for the show any more either, anyone who finds it even remotely funny has a serious mental deficiency.

all those mistakes are pre-plannned & staged

Loved his stand up comedy but I don't get Mrs Browne at all.

    It actually makes me cringe.

Most of that was lifted from Roy Chubby Browne.

Dougal: I'm no good at judging the size of crowds Ted, but I'd say there's about seventeen million of them out there:D
