By any measure of quality it's terrible. Terrible acting, terrible writing, unoriginal writing, unfunny vulgarity, the list is quite long. The number of people watching is irrelevant, you can "prove" a lot of things using that logic.

The bad acting is part of what makes it amusing, people laugh so obviously not everyone finds the writing terrible and 'unfunny vulgarity' is another opinion - I happen to find it funny vulgarity. As do many others. As don't many others - that's the whole point. It's an opinion.

There's plenty of shows I don't like and plenty I don't watch which are popular. Different people have different tastes and everyone's entitled to an opinion but it's a fact that Mrs. Brown's Boys is terrible television. A friend's 90 year old Grandmother actually said the other day that she doesn't like it. The reason? She thinks it's very outdated.

The purpose of TV is to entertain people and MBB gets massive amounts of viewers. So it looks to me that its doing what its supposed to do. As Carlos Roca said its only your opinion that its bad TV and you see it as such because you dont like it or find it entertaining.

If it wasnt as popular people wouldnt give a shít about it or those who watch it, its the fact its popular that people can latch onto to be dicks and try claim their are better than the multitude of ignorant morons that watch something they find so beneath them.

Luckily in my house we have this thing called a remote control. It allows you to change the channel if you don't like something...

Will never ever understand the sheer hatred for MBB. Not my type of humour but I can see why people would find it funny and if that's what they like to watch, let them off.

The only thing more annoying than MBB is people bitching about MBB.

I'll be honest: Haven't got much time for MBB or Father Ted. Yes. I really said that. I'm actually not worshipping Father Ted. I've found a few people claim to be Father Ted fans just because it's the done thing, when they haven't really watched it at all, which is fairly annoying. I know it's an Irish institution and it has great moments but it's not the golden show it's made out to be.
Personally I find FT still has some bits that are hysterical, but by and large a lot of the humour has dated quite badly - it happens. I'd imagine there's a rake of kids under 18 who think it's terrible, but that's just a hunch. That's grand though - it's natural and happens to at least 95% of all comedy after 15-20 years or so. Seinfeld is kind of the same - still a decent show to watch in the background or whatnot, but it's hardly side-splitting these days.

What annoys me about Mrs Brown's Boys isn't only that it's dumb, has piles of stolen/recycled jokes and canned laughter (if you need canned laughter in this day and age, your show's not funny) and relies on stuff from the stone ages ("it's a man in drag bwahahahahaha") but that the humour itself is dated by at least 20-odd years.

It's like bringing out the first Carry On movies in the 1980s, or Wayne's World in 2010, it just doesn't work. I just cannot understand for the life of me how people find this stuff funny.

There is one thing you dont do and that is call someone a ignorant moron, just because they dont like something you do.

There just opinons given, not name calling.

I don't feel superior or 'cool' for not liking Mrs Brown, it's just so obviously shíte I cannot understand it's popularity, and I find it hard to believe I'm in the minority with that view. Normally even in shows I find crap I can see why it's popular, even in my very least favourite shows, but MBB has no redeeming factors for me, it's like a poorly produced nickelodeon show. I've laughed more at episodes of iCarly

Can someone please explain why this show is popular?

If we are to avoid future alien invasion I suggest beaming episodes of Mrs browns boys into deep space.
We wouldn't be invaded - they'd just drop a nuke the size of the sun onto us. Just to be safe.

I think he meant that MBB's haters are the ones who are likely to consider people who enjoy the show 'ignorant morons' or beneath them.

I've watched it a couple of times just to see what all the hate was about and tbh I can't understand where it comes from. It wouldn't be my type of thing but the humour is at the expense of nobody and people enjoy it so leave them alone I reckon.

Matriarchal comedic figure at the hub of the family - it's pretty formulaic comedy. Everyone has a Mother and some may identify with the characters or see them as analogous to their own brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins or friends.

Oh i see, because people that like and watch it are ignorants morons, not everybody thinks that though, to call someone ignorant whether they like something or not is not nice, i hate that word.

What's up with people who watch this rubbish

Dude, neither I nor the person who wrote the original post called anyone ignorant morons.

What he was getting at was that he suspected that those who look down on others who enjoy MBB's consider them beneath their own hi-falutin notions of themselves.

    Right?

Seems to be cool to hate Mrs Brown for some reason.

I don't think Mrs Brown is crap to be cool. I just think its crap.

Yes there is always the remote control, but seeing as it's RTE showing it and most of us pay for the service I think it's perfectly reasonable to voice an opinion on it.

One of the most misused words ever. Looking down on people is snobbery. Disliking something, having a personal preference... is not snobbery.

But some people who dislike it are looking down on those who like it...that's what this whole argument has been about.

Well if it's not snobbery it's probably begrudgery or some combination of the two.

It is when it gets to the stage that people cant help but go on and on about how shíte it is and how the people who watch it are idiots/simpletons/bottom feeders etc.

If its a show you dont like or watch then why the need to bash it or the people who watch it other than to do what people these days love to do and jump on the anti popularity bandwagon. Anything the masses like certain people will hate simply because of that. The ironic thing is those people think it sets them apart from the so called simpletons when in actuality they are just as involved as the people who watch the show despite the fact they cant stand it. So you tell me who the real idiots are ?

I wouldn't be one of them at all - the opposite in fact . I'm totally perplexed that over 9 million in UK could watch that.

    Probably 1 million here.
I'd nearly say popularism and people being told it is funny has many watching - I hope people will see that it is a one trick pony and it will have a short run.
    (another year maybe)

It is almost sickening to hear the RTE Radio interviews fawn over him and his success - I'd like one of them to say "Brendan - how did you pull this piece of **** off" - He is a smart lad - he knows he selling low grade "****e". That question is as good as his script.

Yes I'm out of touch - pure and utter "****e" - "Ah me fanny" haah ahaah hhaaa haaa haaa

"**** off Grandad" haaah hah ahaa ahha

But it's pretended that anyone who dislikes it is doing so due to snobbery.
Well if it's not snobbery it's probably begrudgery or some combination of the two.
Why would simply disliking it be either? What's to begrudge?

Why does anyone dislike anything? Because it's just personal preference usually.

    Make a choice.

    Begrudgery or snobbery?

    On BBC

    Was watching it last night.

Surprised they would put up with the script.

For example when there is a pause in the script.

    He just says **** Off

    - You can't even write the script on boards - and this would be way more liberal than BBC

I enjoy Father Ted i also enjoy MBB, its simple enough comedy which seemingly appeals to a lot of people. I also went to one of the shows in the o2 a couple of weeks ago along with thousands of other people. Each to their own i suppose

Loved his stand up comedy but I don't get Mrs Browne at all.

    It actually makes me cringe.
