I don't grasp how someone can think a woman loses her shape by bring muscular/ fit/ toned. Surely a fit & healthy shape *is* her (natural) shape?!

Hourglass is defined by specific measurements, 34' busy, 28' waist, and 34' hips as far as I can remember. Unless a woman is naturally a very specific shape, those measurements are probably pretty hard to acheive.

I completely lose my waist unless I maintain a certain level of fitness and half decent diet.

There needs to be 10 inches or more between the waist and hip/bust measurements so the above are more straight up and down.

Classic hourglass type measurements would be 36-24-36, though obvs there are varying measurements that fit the bill.

I'd say once the waist measurement is at an unhealthy level, you wouldn't really look hourglass though, I think you'd need to be a healthy weight too.

    Oops I was well off!

Can't see how anyone would be attracted to the female bodybuilders you see in those competitions, they lose their boobs and ass when they pack on so much muscle and nearly look like men, doubt many women would fancy the male bodybuilders either.

The chances of coming across someone like that in real life are slim though, I imagine most people would be like myself and just work out and excerise to keep fit and keep the fat at bay.

How do guys feel about muscular calves on a woman?

Since muscle is the only way for a healthy person to have calves of any description, I find them very sexy on a woman. However, calf size is very much genetically determined, and it's hard to change.

I'd agree with that, but remember, women must take large doses of steroids and HGH to look that way. A woman who trains naturally will never ever look the way you described.

    Are you a woman?
    You're getting very defensive.

I find muscles detract from any curves. If you disagree thats fine. My opinion does not stop the women that want to, to lift weights, there's thousands of pictures of the body weightlifting gives. It's up to women to decide whether they like that for themselves or not.
They'll attract people who like them, and although body is an initial attraction between people. The main 'keeper' is personality and interests.

And I when talking about curves, I'm not talking about the size 16 who needs a corset to create the waist.
I've already said I like the slim size 10 with curves. Muscles take away from it, particularly 6 packs.

My opinion, if you like it, thats yours too, isn't it great when the world isn't filled with one type of person? ;)

You're talking in extremes when you mention 'muscles' and 'six packs'. I am a member of a gym filled with women who train regularly and as a red blooded male I can declaratively say that regular progressive heavy squats only do good things for the attractiveness of the female figure in a classical sense.

The female bodybuilding '#strongisthenewsexy' image of women with ~11% bodyfat is an extreme. The myths and misconceptions around the effects of different types of exercise and nutritition are at play in a big way in this thread. For females and males who spend 40 - 50 hours a week on average sitting at a desk with another 5 to 10 hours sitting in a car or bus commuting their exercise should be some mobility, some cardio, some weights. All running is not any better or more appropriate than all weights and both are better than all nothing.

Women lifting heavy for strength who mix in cardio and mobility work and eat real food DON'T morph into female bodybuilders in my experience. To look like some of the pictures posted here is a product of extremely specific nutrition and exercise choices applied obsessively for an extended period of time (with some added chemical assistance potentially). All people should lift to build strength when they can because we'll start to lose it as we get older. Just as all people should eat well and exercise their heart muscle.

Being concious of and actively maintaining one's own health is a distinctly attractive trait I think.

This is total nonsense. Absolute unmitigated balderdash.

It's shīt like this that causes many women to hesitate when it comes to lifting.

When in fact it would do a great deal to enhance those 'curves' everybody talks about. And by curves I don't mean the basic barrel shape many seem to think it is.

+1. There are actually a lot of women who won't lift for fear of getting bulky. Or else you see them lifting really small weights, which is pretty much a waste of time.

meh, I like whatever I like. It really depends on the person.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a perfect person looking for personality. Just different things turn me on at different times and with different people.

But, I reckon if anybody just tries and gets fit, they'll look grand.

Also, weights don't bulk you up unless you're trying to bulk up.

I think the dancer's body is the perfect body, man or woman.

"I wouldn't use weights because I don't want to become all muscly, and it turns the fat into muscle" etc is just myth stuff. Using weights just tones you up; getting noticeable muscles is way down the road; getting really muscly is further down again.

Well yeah and you would want to be lifting heavy to pack on muscle, which makes me think some of the female bodybuilders are taking something.

Here are some athletic women at varying levels of physical fitness from different sports. Personally, I prefer Staciana Stitts's (the swimmer with the completely shaved head) body.

Most of them probably are. I weight train and I have done for a good while now. It's very hard for women to become 'bulky' naturally.

There's pics of what I look like in my fitness log here.

    I've still got curves and I haven't turned into a she-beast.

Competitive swimmers, male and female look great imo. Also gymnasts and rowers.

Also, if any doubters care to image search Leryn Franco, Venezuelan javelin thrower, the evidence that time spent lifting weights does wonders for your kit is all there.

Nah I've actually found that a lot of men are pretty turned off by the fact that I weight train but that really is a reflection of their own insecurities. Doesn't bother me though, I'm not doing it for anyone else other than myself.

Is it not more likely that it's because they don't like the muscley look on a female? I know that's what it is for the men I know.

Ah I don't know what way I was looking at it. I see. Well to me that looks like you've got quite a muscley arm.

I used to weight train when I had the time and money for it, so for now the school run is my workout. I was a lot curvier (in the hourglass shape type) when lifting. I did end up laying off the ab workouts when my belly had a "four pack" because I personally preferred just a nice flat stomach with a little definition at the sides. I'm naturally very slim though so any work on my muscles would give alot of definition. I LOVE shapely calfs and arms and would kill to have the ass I did when I could squat. I didnt look like a bodybuilder, nobody knew i was even in a gym let alone commenting on my muscles or whatever, if anything people were just shocked when a five foot four woman could lift heavy boxes at work cause i didnt look very strong. Now I'm a bit marshmallowy in the stomach and thighs but working on it!

No your arms don't look muscley, they look toned.

It's awkward to put this in a way that doesn't sound creepy but I bet when you have your arm relaxed it's way less "flabby" than someone else with similar bodyfat.
