Yeah that's were I'd draw the line. I can't imagine having much fun with someone who actually walked around with bodyfat that low.

I wanna know this answer too.

I am an averagely physically fit woman, 32, but I'm tiny. Real thin, tiny waist, tiny build, but my bones don't show. I showed a (male) friend a photo last night, me when I was overweight.

He said he prefered it to my current, fit, healthy build. He liked the curves. But I ilook at it and I was genuinely overweight!!

    We can't win, eh?
i havnt seen pics of u.but i would prob say the same as ur ftiends.love a women with some curves

I'm not a fan of women who can run faster than me.

Size 10 would be my cut-off point on the lower end.

    Ok. still vile.
Couldn't be more wrong. The opposite is true in most cases. Muscle only adds shape to whatever frame a woman already has.
We'll agree to disagree. From the majority I've seen, I find they become 'stiffer' looking, and that their waist becomes less defined. Perhaps for those without a natural hourglass shape, but those with, the difference between hip width and waist width, become less, making them look more manly and giving them the "brick/ruler" body shape.

See nothing attractive about bulging muscles.
Again, a misunderstanding of body composition - when you see a woman with shapely calves and thighs, that is muscle. There is no amount of fat a woman can gain to improve her figure.

meh. did I mention anything about calves?
Hourglass shape, wide hips, thin waist. And that is lost with weight lifting.

    JMO.

I'd be in the "curves FTW" camp myself - the size 0 stick insect look does nothing for me, nor would the built/muscular look as per some of the YT links here.

But more than that I am attracted to someone who's comfortable in their own skin and who is confident enough to just be themselves with someone.

    I don't want much really :)

Fit women don't look like "stick insects" (which is an awful thing to say about women anyway!).

We probably should be more like these women than we do - they are the ones who are eating lean proteins, eating clean and exercising regularly.

    So they are the ideal.

Maybe with some, but two exes of mine weren't far off the above(low body fat/discernible stomach muscle definition) with no interruption to menses. One in particular had a "four pack" most of the time and let me put it this way, I can tell you she would have wished her menstruation had gone or even dialed back a bit.

As I said earlier the Irish lads as a general cultural thing seem to prefer curves to various degrees more than other European cultures. Check out IB's username. QED :D

Years ago I was in a club with a bunch of Italian lads and I recall two of them having a heated debate while pointing about the place. Later in the smoking section I asked them what they were discussing and one of them came out with something along the lines of "There are quite a lot of big(he didn't say big) women in here. We don't understand when we see Irish men who are good looking trying to chat them up. What's that about?". They were actually floored by this.

I've seen that with thin Irish guys and well built muscular Irish guys. I could understand it if the guys who dug the extra pounds were "large of frame" themselves but no obvious pattern emerged on that score. I will say that for all the stick Irish guys sometimes get from Irish women, they are in my experience significantly more accepting of different body shapes in women than quite the number of other European cultures. They're not that far off from Nigerian and some other African* lads I've known on that score as far as liking the curves was concerned.

*that can be a major cliche though. It soooo depends on which country/culture/background the African lads happen to be from. Never mind individual preference. EG a couple of Kenyan lads I knew (who may have been outliers, I dunno enough about their culture) were into rail thin women.

Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.

Ah you know what I mean.. unhealthily thin then - better?

Disagree.. as I said above what's "ideal" is what someone is happy with themselves. Striving for some other person's/"society's" notion of perfection is what leads to problems.

What's more important (I think anyway) is that someone is confident enough in their own self-image to not be bothered about such views. If they want to tone up/lose weight/whatever then fair play to them, as long as they're doing it for themselves.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,695 ✭✭✭December2012

Of course people should be happy with themselves!

But I still think that the ideal fit person is one who regularly trains and eats to the best if their ability and interest.

Take me - I train twice a week and I eat okay, but not to an ideal standard.

But I'm very proud of my achievements, happy in my life and I am eating and exercising the way I want to (which is not the ideal standard).

I still want to get better at it though, but I'll never give up my chocolate!

Neither will bodybuilders walking around at 9% BF.

    Calorie tracking, micronutrients, and macro's.

    Job done.

People feel that getting to low BF requires complete abstinence from chocolate, and sweets.

Not the case. It may not be optimal but it certainly won't deter it.

Ah I dunno.. me I eat what I want and don't worry about it.

Sure I'm technically overweight but not by much (size 36/38 @ 5'7/8, late 30s) so if I feel the jeans getting a bit tight I just cut out the crap for a few weeks and all is well again :)

For me I have too many other things to be doing than worrying about such things. I also like my chocolate/weekly takeaway and my car too much - I could eat and train religiously and still have a heart attack or get run over or something, so I might as well live how I want while I can.

    But that's me!

But women just lifting a few weights. I do find, their body becomes more manly. And they lose their waist/shape somewhat.

This is total nonsense. Absolute unmitigated balderdash.

It's shīt like this that causes many women to hesitate when it comes to lifting.

When in fact it would do a great deal to enhance those 'curves' everybody talks about. And by curves I don't mean the basic barrel shape many seem to think it is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,695 ✭✭✭December2012

True - I know a few folks that are really interested in their fitness and definitely one thing that works in their favour is they LOVE their food - they enjoy and savour every bit and flavour. It's all good good made with the best ingredients and the best booze.

    Are you a woman?
    You're getting very defensive.

I find muscles detract from any curves. If you disagree thats fine. My opinion does not stop the women that want to, to lift weights, there's thousands of pictures of the body weightlifting gives. It's up to women to decide whether they like that for themselves or not.
They'll attract people who like them, and although body is an initial attraction between people. The main 'keeper' is personality and interests.

And I when talking about curves, I'm not talking about the size 16 who needs a corset to create the waist.
I've already said I like the slim size 10 with curves. Muscles take away from it, particularly 6 packs.

My opinion, if you like it, thats yours too, isn't it great when the world isn't filled with one type of person? ;)

Your opinion that weightlifting makes them lose their curves is just bull though. Weightlifting does the opposite for women and the definition that you're talking about only comes with extremely low body fat.

Well, not from the pictures. I don't find them that curvy. I find them stiff looking, and difference between hip width and waist width, to become smaller. (which loses the curves)

Thats what I see, you don't. Thats fine.
I'm not going to repeat myself again anyway.

My arms are muscly :o They tend to attract attention if they're out so I keep them in and under wraps. (unless I'm trying to impress someone) It's not even that they're huge or masculine, they just seem to be very noticeable. I think it's because I have very skinny lower limbs so they come as a bit of a surprise. The rest of me has had too much cake.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 512 ✭✭✭Vomit

    Ok. still vile.
I think you misunderstand me- bodybuilders walk a certain way on stage by choice, not because their movement is restricted.
I hate to drag this particular point out, but I for one don't want women to be discouraged by reading stuff like this, especially when it's just not true.

Women have wide hips because of their skeletal structure, and not because they are carrying extra fat. In a country with such a huge problem with obesity, I would hate for any woman to think she must get fat in order to get a 'womanly' shape, because it's not the case. Like I said earlier, the only thing that determines underlying body shape, aside from bone structure, is muscle. Excess fat is neither necessary nor healthy.
See nothing attractive about bulging muscles.
If you're talking about women on anabolic steroids, competing in an ever more size oriented sport, then I agree.

I think a lot of people (yourself included) are mistaking very low body fat with bulging muscles, and for the record I find women with extremely low body fat % unattractive too.
meh. did I mention anything about calves?
Hourglass shape, wide hips, thin waist. And that is lost with weight lifting.

    JMO.
Hourglass shape is determined by lean body composition (i.e. muscle and skeleton) and doesn't have anything to do with fat. You could find 5 women with the same body fat % and see that they all have differently shaped bodies.
