I had all the Hardknott's when they came out. Felt they were all decent, nothing to write home about, except for the Queboid. That was one of the best beers I've had. Must try it again.

I don't like the Foam & Fury DIPA.

Got a small taster last night, it's way, way too far up the hop scale for me, unfortunately. I'd never be able to stomach anything more than a mouthful.

Buried at Sea though, it's fast becoming my favourite tipple.

Had a pint of Tumbler too, very nice also.

    Was that the 2012 tumbler?

    Dat Foam

    DAT FURY.

Seriously, beyond it being a fantastic IPA, there was a couple of flavours going on in there that I could not put my finger on, but was in too much taste happiness to even try to bother my brain. I was going to go for a second glass, but went for an Odell's IPA after it.

Ah, here. 2-0 beer. I had paid 5.50 for a half flat Coors in a plastic cup at a gig before hand. I couldn't really lose, but what a way to win.

    For anyone in G-g-g-galway.

Go to the Oslo on Wednesdays, €4 for all Irish craft beers on tap (including Foam and Fury) and a different €4 bottle special every week (this week is Leann Follian, last week was Porterhouse Louder I think).

Nice bar and the bar manager, Sjef, is a good egg even if is Dutch.

I don't like the Foam & Fury DIPA.
I actually really liked it, but followed it up with a bottle of Hoptimum (I know, crazy; but that's how I roll ) and just found the Hoptimum to be a far better balanced beer. Foam and Fury struck me as being very much in the Stone Brewing vain, as in 'bitterness for the sake of publishing crazy the IBU numbers' and sweetness to match, whereas Hoptimum was far more drinkable (despite the higher ABV and amount of hops), without the 'suck on a lemon-face'. The fact that Galway Bay Brewery have managed to produce a beer that is good enough to be compared to Hoptimum is a massive achievement and I look forward to drinking it some more (but maybe just one, of a night!).

Pretty much sums up my view of F&F

Funny, I wouldn't consider Hoptimum a balanced beer at all. I didn't think there was enough malt behind the hops, which I thought were rather nasal and lacking in body.

Had a Hilden Headless Dog last night. Quite nice. Really liking the Hilden beers I've tried. They have one with a yellow label, the name of which I can't recall that's spiced with black pepper. Maybe not to everything new taste but I liked the originality of it. Worth a try if you like trying things a little different.

Lads anyone have any good recommendations for off licences with a good selection of different stuff in Dublin? At the minute I kind of rely on Drinkstore in Stoneybatter, they always have some cool stuff to try but its small enough so wondering if anyone has any other suggestions. If they're in or around the city centre all the better.

    Cheers.

Have you checked Drinkstore's site? They have a lot of beers in the back, too, usually. They don't always have the stuff on the site in stock, but there's some great ones in there.

Me too. I thought the OF&F was really well balanced all round.
Not to extreme at all, while being still full on.

It may be that the glass of Foam and fury completely killed off my taste buds to the point that I could no longer taste anything, including the Hoptimum!
Sounds like a side-by-side comparison is warranted. Somebody wake up The BeerNut. Do you take requests? :)

Barney's Brew is the Hilden beer with pepper. I had a Twisted Hop last night and it was fantastic, a lot hoppier than normal. Hope they keep making it like that.

The thing about off licenses is Drinkstore pretty much has everything that comes into the country. Sometimes you need to ask them to look out the back if you can't find what you want.

If I was going to compare Foam and Fury to any of the Sierra Nevada beers I'd say it's closer in style, hoppiness and malt profile to their Celebration than any of their other beers.

Probus Wines, Fenian St has a good beer selection, but avoid at lunchtimes

Outside of that though, you need to come out of town a bit.

I'm Northside based, so someone else can talk about the Southside.

Sweeney's Wine Merchants in Glasnevin is a good off licence, with a decent selection of beers, and a nice posh deli too - Sheridan's Cheeses are a speciality there.

Then there's the Carry Out in Ashtown, again, good beer choice in there.

You've got McHugh's, two shops, one in Artane and the other in Kilbarrack, well known good stockists of great beers.

Any of the larger Tescos are also worth a visit - Clare Hall and Clearwater, or a Superquinn either.

Drinkstore is probably your best bet to be honest. As others have said get them to check out the back.:D

The Corkscrew off-licence attached to Kenny's in Lucan is surprisingly top notch.

With drinkstore it's not "out the back" where most of the beer is.
They have a storage unit about a mile and a bit away where most of their beers are from the website.

If you get on the website and pick a few beers, then phone the shop and ask when you could pick them up they will make sure they get them all down from the storage unit and keep them aside for you.

You need to give them a few hours notice.

I was in Dublin earlier in the year for a few hours and was in Mulligans having dinner before jumping back on the train so decided to pop over and get some Barrel aged Celebration, asked your man at the counter and he told me he'd be able to have them there in about an hour as another lad was bringing stock from storage in the van around then and he could phone him and ask him to pick up a box, unfortunately I had to leave so missed out.

Order online from drinkstore, collect the next day is your best bet. This allows you to properly research your choices too instead of basing your selections on the pretty labels :)

+1 on the tesco extra and maybe smaller stores for people outside Dublin. I could imagine you would go through their selection in a few months, or do they get in different beers from time to time? Anyone know?

    In Ireland, nowhere.

Witherspoons up north had it for their festival a while back but it was brewed in England, not 'murica.

'Spoons fly over a few brewers and pay them to brew a batch of their beer exclusively for 'spoons in a UK craft brewery.

You're not likely to get any Sixpoint beers in Ireland any time soon either.

AleSmith Wee Heavy. Extremely nice beer. I think this style is fast becoming one of my favourite styles. Either that or I've just been lucky with the ones I've tried recently.

After reading all the comments about the new Galway Bay beer, particularly where one poster compared it to Sierra Nevada's Celebration Ale, I decided to get a bottle of the Celebration Ale this evening.
    What a great beer.
Now having an O'Haras DIPA and, despite it being a very nice beer, in my opinion anyway it doesn't come close.

    Sierra celebration is lovely.

I know Witherspoon's are coming to Ireland. But Sixpoints won't be coming to Ireland anytime soon. Not even via Witherspoon's.

The Super Valu on Aston Quay has a fair few bottles in. Handy for town but you are looking at Fullers/O'Hara's exotic more so than say a Widmers or Cains exotic.

It's taken a few months (and far too much money) but my stock for the winter is nearly complete!

O'Hara's Barrel Aged Leann Foláin. Franciscan Well Jameson Stout. White Gypsy Imperial 'Russian' Stout. BrewDog Cocoa Psycho. BrewDog Tokyo*. Black Sheep Brewery Imperial Russian Stout. Goose Island Bourbon County Stout. Brooklyn Brewery Black Chocolate Stout. Sierra Nevada Narwhal Imperial Stout. To Øl Black Ball Porter. Nøgne Ø Imperial Stout. Schloss Eggenberg Samichlaus Classic.

Just waiting on one last special delivery in the next few days, all going well. Should be a good Christmas! :D

You should pick up some stout to compliment those.
