After running yesterday I skateboarded into the city. 5km. My inner thighs are in bits today. Agony when I woke up. Presume its a combination of that, running and weights which caused it.

    Anywho...today:

    Gym

    Chest and triceps workout.
10km on bike to try loosen the legs a bit. It didn't really but it didn't do any harm either.

Also I FINALLY finished A Feast For Crows after a third attempt. What was George RR Martin thinking!!!! So I can get back to the good stuff with A Dance with Dragons.

    Gym

Leg work out. Concentrated on single leg work. Split squat etc. This will hurt tomorrow.

    Treadmill.

1km warm up. Followed by incline intervals. 3.5 incline. 90 seconds on 90 off. Speed varied 14.5 to 15. Walk recovery. Probably 5 times. Its a start. Doing this to regain some sort of pace.

    Today:

    Started with 750 metre jog.

Followed by laps of soccer pitch. slow running length, fast for width. Then some sprints.

    Another 750 metres home.

Gosh the cold wakes you up! Random session. Lost count of laps and sprints. No garmin. No harm.

Feeling festive after running in a field covered in frost! ho ho ho

    Today:

    25.29 run.

Very sore from sprints. Legs aren't used to it at all. Hamstrings are very tight as are hips. Also feeling a bit sick. So all in all I just took it handy. Winter miles Summer smiles!

All flued since last update. Seeing as how im still not used to the cold at all I didn't do any running.

Jantastic starts Monday and ive committed to 4 runs a week. I think im going to use the Hal Higdon intermediate 5k training plan. My goal race will be the St Patricks weekend 5km in Dublin. Anything under 22 minutes will be a success.

    Tonight:

    3 sets of

10 one leg squat per leg
    20 regular squats
    10 lunges per leg
    1 minute plank

This is a rough workout out for strengthening legs that I got from physio ages ago. I find it quite good. Simple yet effective.

    Back on my bike!

My first cycle on a bike outside in about 19 months! Great to get back out there.

My legs weren't at all happy to be sitting on a bike though and neither was my backside. A rather modest 15km done and dusted.

Off to try to defrost now. Burrrrrrr

Day 1 of Jantastic where ive committed to 4 runs a week coinciding with hal higdons intermediate 5k training plan.

    Today: 3 miles in 27.19.

Pretty miserable run, between strong wind and the water logged pitches I ran on. My legs were very stiff too.

    Today:

New territory with 400 metre intervals. No idea what speed to run them at the moment. Pacing myself is difficult. It'll come with time I suppose.

Half mile warm up and down.

    400 metres x 5 with 400 recovery walking.

    Times 1.40, 1.44, 1.45, 1.44, 1.41.

    Surprised how consistent they are.

Evening. Usual rehab routine with squats etc. Followed by foam rolling.

    Fog. Phlegm. 3 miles. 24.27.

    Today:

My running plan called for a 5 mile run. I can't remember the last time I ran 5 miles. So I was apprehensive about the run but once I started I was fine. Slow pace but thats the nature of LSRs. And although clearly its not very far, 5 miles is unfortunately my LSR for now. Reality bites.

    5 wet miles 46.27

    Today:

3 miles 26.20. Felt much faster but the watch doesn't lie.

Another wet one. Legs felt strong but im so one paced its not funny.

On a positive note...week one of Jantastic down. Got my 4 runs plus another one. Can't remember the last time I ran 5 days in a week.

    This morning:

    3 miles 24.59.

    Today:

My first ever tempo run. 3.57 miles 31.38.

The biggest thing I notice straight away is ive never paid any attention to pace . Never.

I ran a marathon aiming for four hours. Yet I couldn't tell you what pace is necessary to achieve that time. Even though I have always worn a garmin I never paid attention to pace. I know being a slave to the garmin isnt ideal either but its pretty ridiculous to not know anything about pace.

So today I had no idea what was slow or fast or in between. Started off ten minutes at about 9.20. Then about ten mins at 8.50 and then back to the previous pace.

Good experience doing the run. Getting the turnover of legs going feels good. Obviously terrible speed wise but that will come with consistency.

Also from now on the screen on my garmin's main field will be pace!

    Today:

    3.1 miles 25.15. Average pace 8.07.

This pace craic is mad. Im amazed how ignorant I was to it all. Hoping this will add an awful lot to my training.
