I like their beers but if Leann folain is cheaper per mL then I'm going to go for Leann folain.
The problem with the 330 mL is that they're nearly as expensive as the 500 mL so in general it puts me off buying them.

    That's fair enough.

That's not always the case though, and it's a fair argument if it is. However, I don't think it's price that people have the problem with. Some people seem to just not like the 330ml bottles. I'm probably in the minority though as I prefer the smaller bottles.

Don't get me wrong, they're fine, but I wouldn't go out of my way to buy then as a result, unless it was one of their new beers, or there's nothing nicer available.
Whereas if they were 500 ml bottles, I'd buy them more readily.

Bottle size is no issue for me. I always pick up Kona beers and I'd have never discovered the coconut brown ale if it was.

    €2.49 for 330ml.

    3.50 for 330ml is extortionate.

    2.49= €4.29 per pint
    3.50= €6 per pint

A lot of people seem to have some sort of mental block when it comes to longnecks, they just view them as "drinks". A longneck is only 58% of a pint.

I remember a guy in work asking for a bottle of carlsberg (which was not available at the time), the lounge girl came back with a half pint glass of it. He was disgusted over this, quickly repouring it into a pint glass, would rather have it losing fizz and being poured into a deadish end of a pint rather than be "seen dead drinking a half pint". But most of these same macho men have no bother drinking 58% of a pint, but once it drops to 50% you're a complete pansy lightweight who should be ashamed of themselves . Often this 58% portion costs more than the pint too.

They were off licence prices though. Which is very expensive for off licence irish craft beer. At 6 quid for a pint, I'd be going to the likes of brewdock instead.

I have a horrible vision of guys skipping all the 355ml bottles in Redmonds because they are too small

I wouldn't skip smaller bottles entirely - especially imported brews - but I do have an mental bias against them.

Yeah, I was pointing out that they were on a par with pub prices, showing how expensive they are.

And to put it into figures, as many people just think of a longneck as being a wee bit smaller, when it is very significant.

I bet if you gave people 1 second to answer the question "what % of a pint is a longneck" that the vast majority would quickly give an answer higher than 58%.

I expect to pay more for imports but if 8 Degrees 330ml is only slightly cheaper than an O'Hara's/Galway Hooker 500ml I'm rarely going to buy it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,347 ✭✭✭✭Grayditch

I generally don't think of it like that, but I can see why people could. I'll pick something up if I fancy one that night. If I haven't had it for a while.

Read this thread - also, they ARE losing my business with this ridiculous bottling strategy.

    Read this thread

588 pages? Nah you're grand. Probably be easier if you just told me though.

also, they ARE losing my business with this ridiculous bottling strategy.
Yeah but you not buying 5 or 6 bottles a year from them is hardly gonna affect their bottom line. But I am still interested in your statement that they're losing business due to the "ridiculous bottling strategy"

Are we talking you and a couple of people on here? Or a bigger number? I'm genuinely interested.

8 degrees doesnt strike me as a brewery which is struggling to move product.

Have you tried Currim Craft Beer? It's lovey!

off licence near me is selling the 8 Degrees btls at €3.35 each and the O Hara's and Galway Hooker at €3.20, will be in there tomorrow and going to tell them there prices for 8 Degrees is way to expensive.

I also do homebrewing so much prefer to have plenty of 500ml btls over 330ml btls.

That's a shocking price for 8 Degrees! Amber garage on the Dublin Road in Fermoy sells them (local product and all) 5 for €9 lately. Yummy!

I homebrew as well and you'd need a hammer and chisel to get the labels off any of the 8 degrees bottles, whereas the O'Haras bottle labels slide off smooth as silk which makes an easy choice even easier when looking to buy. Howling Gale on draught is pretty damn good though.
Just finished a Hopside Down, an India Pale lager pretty underwhelmed.

You have a point but i hate getting a half served in those slender half pint glasses, it is very feminine.

Often i buy a pint bottle of guinness and am left perplexed that they give me a half pint glass. Any know why? I always then ask for a pint glass.

Had a fat tire and a dogfish 90 minute. Fat tire was nice and reminded me of another beer i cant put a name on. Quite malty which wouldnt be a beer id love but seemed a well made beer. The 90min i was sure tasted very much like a brewdog hardcore. Both very similar abv so i cracked one open yo have them side by side. I was wrong about the similarity. 90 was lighter in colour smoother and crisper taste. Hardcore felt harsh in comparison. Would like to drink a few more 90s alright.

Having another Cathedhral quarter, think it's growing on me.

I don't get the bottle size.

I like the bigger bottles, yeah. But I'd drink a good beer out of a welly, if I'm honest.

I bet they ask if you want ice in the glass as well.
That's a particular bug bear of mine. Some barmen seem to assume you want a half-pint glass filled with ice when you order a bottle.
    FFS!

I use a half pint glass when drinking bottles in the pub, it's about head retention. Also, I don't think/care that it looks "feminine" - what does that even mean ?
