totally agree the selection is awful, no back catalogue titles to buy, and the fact they charge p+p within Ireland is disgraceful when foreign sites such as Zavvi and WowHD don't.

This HMV/Xtra Vision is really the last chance for selling DVDs and the like in Ireland if they don't do it right and compete with UK sites they will be gone for good.

anybody here from Wexford? I'm heading up to the Xtravision/HMV concession store next week. Looking to buy blu-rays. Does it have much stock/choice, and whats the pricing like? Is it worth the trip? Thanks.

Update: I dropped up there today and spent €180 on blu-rays, quite happy with what I got.

They did say though that they will be increasing selection as time goes on, I'd have patience and give them time.

that's a bad statement for xtravision/hmv to release, in my opinion anyway. I'm not a business owner, but if a business is to open with the intention of getting a customer base back from other retailers, they should jump back in fully operational, or at least close to it.

I took one look at that website and just shook my head, and i won't give it another visit again.

What you suggest is wonderful in theory but if part of the issue is that HMV went into receivership because it wasn't a profitable concern, how many suppliers do you think are going to be willing to front them a load of stock for the relaunch? Bear in mind that suppliers who did this would be exposing themselves to a lot of the risk involved in the HMV relaunch, and HMV's woes will already have caused them enough financial problems this year. And arguably it was having such a wide array of stock that didn't shift that caused them to go into receivership in the first place.

I would imagine it would be better for a company that was as big as HMV to get back out in the market as soon as possible. Especially in the run up to Christmas. HMV always used to be packed out the door in the run up to Christmas and I'd stab a guess that most of what was being bought were box sets and new releases.

I'm no business brain but to me it makes sense to get the name back out there in as risk free a way as possible and slowly build back up the customer base. As Fysh says, they've been burned once and it would seem a silly idea to me to jump right back in exactly as they were before, when that clearly didn't work.

I think the problem here is that people were expecting them to reopen exactly as they were, which as pointed out, clearly wasn't working for them, so it's no real surprise that things are being run differently now.

What is the story with the lack of a sale in HMV? Most old dvds are 6.99 - used to be between 2.99 and 4.99 prior to it closing. Surely once it was open more than 30 days they can start having sales again? I couldn't get over how similar everything was to the first day it reopened when I was in there yesterday. Even the selection for the 3 for 20 quid bluray deal is pathetic and if anything is worse than the first day nearly two months ago.

I'm guessing that the lack of a sale is because they're trying to make sure that they actually get some profit from every unit sold. They need to make sure they're on a reliable business footing first, for at least two successive quarters and probably until after the Christmas season (since it would be one of their best periods of the year), and you don't do that by selling stock at no profit while racking up costs due to overheads.

I'm not saying that what they're doing is brilliant - I'm just saying that there are almost certainly financial reasons why they can't do what they did previously. Part of that will be down to how much stock their suppliers are willing to provide on NET30 credit terms, and part of that will be the requirements that have been determined by Hilco for evaluating whether the business is in fact feasible as a long-term operation.

If their 3 for €20 blu ray selection is anything to go by they won't last long

Have to say their selection of Blu Rays is very poor. Plus they are over priced. I see Golden Discs have reopened in SGreen. They had a copy of the five disc Hobbit Extended BD for €35 or so. The same item is under £20 on amazon. No wonder the bricks and mortar shops are going out of business.

True but there's nothing they can do really. That Blu Ray costs the retailer about €22 plus VAT so at €35 they're only making about €6

Amazon would get the item cheaper because of the volume they would order and expect to sell thousands more than the shop so they can afford to sell it at that.

Amazon sell below cost. But they are able to turn over their inventory before paying suppliers allowing them to invest the money and make a small profit. A ordinary retailer wouldn't be able to do this.

Golden Discs aren't paying that much for stock. I used to do the orders for a small independent store and we would be paying 15-16 euro per Blu-Ray. There's an independent music store in Galway who have the Hobbit Extended 3D Blu for 29.99 and I would imagine that they don't get as good a deal as Golden Discs when ordering in titles. Golden Discs and Tower for that matter have atrocious pricing for the majority of their DVDs and Blu-Rays. Last time I was in either, any of the arrow Blu-Ray releases were retailing for 30-40 euro which is way, way above the odds.

It looks like HMV is going to reopen on Grafton Street street.

ICONIC music and entertainment retailer HMV is to re-open on Grafton Street a year after it was forced to close its flagship store.

    Are you sure about that?!

They just took over the very large HMV store on Patrick's St in Cork.

    Closing again?

I'm guessing if it does a fashion retailer is a more likely tenant. Forever 21 is due to open in what was the Moderne etc so there is still obviously interest in prime units in Cork City Centre.

The one in Grafton St a few doors down from the new HMV won't last too long.

I'm surprised at this. I don't think the one on Henry Street is doing that well; it always seems very quiet.

+1 Never seen it busy and I'm yet to buy something in it!

It's a smaller unit on Grafton St. but that's still some huge rent they'd be paying. I can't see them going for a reopening there unless they were 100% confident of success.

Then again.... maybe they're really desperate and it's a last ditch effort to save them again?

The one in Liffey Valley always seems to be busy enough, even if there selection film wise has dropped massively.

For the sake of the city centre economy and consumer choice, I hope HMV do well; everyone wins if they're successful. Presumably they've done their sums and figure Grafton's worth the high rents, and as anecdotal as it is, anytime I've been in the Henry st. branch it has seemed busy enough, within reason - we are in a recession after all.

I'd say most here are savvy and passionate enough to buy our DVDs online, but to me HMV isn't really for us, its for coffeetable enthusiasts, so there's prob still money to be made from them...

I try not to buy anything online unless it's absolutely the last resort. However, it's understandable why people do. Were music shops always so expensive? I used to go into HMV on my lunch break 2 or 3 times a week and come out with arms full off DVD's and CD's. Now I go into a music shop and can't believe the prices they charge. Was I just less frugal in my youth?

Anyway... point being..... if you've got HMV, Tower Records and Golden Discs within walking distance of each other l'd hope it leads to a bit of competition and as such more competitive prices. I know they have to make a profit but €20 for a DVD that's been out for months is just crazy.

Just because it seems busy in one of these stores doesn't mean it does well. I wonder how many are there to decide what movies they should pirate as soon as they get home.
