Club underage matches offer far too many mis-matches to be an accurate judgement on players and indeed even senior club in a lot of cases isn't a great barometer either. Just as you were telling people to cool their jets on Irwin just because he played well in the later stages of the Mayo county championship I can tell you the exact same about Loftus, whose club didn't even make it to the Mayo quarter-finals. The only test that matters in terms of how good you are at county is how well you play with a county jersey on. The rest is just an audition to get that chance.

The fact is Loftus was out-played or matched over the season by Hanley, Doherty, Irwin and Conroy. Loftus certainly wasn't standing head-and-shoulders above any of the rest of the group. It was an excellent forward unit for a minor team to have and all five have lesser or greater chances of making an impact at higher levels.

Trying to rubbish Irwin and then champion Loftus is too rich for my tea, though.

Good article, admire his honesty re the possible need to slightly speed up his free taking routine.Easier said than done when you've practiced it in a certain fashion for a number of years.Cillian's routine reminds me of Jonny Wilkinson in the repeated perfection that he aspires to,through endless practice.Hope that's the last article that delves into the AI loss,I think it's been done to death.

I thought people were getting way too carried away regards COC's late fks. Alright he could have should have been quicker but they are all 1 out of 10 reasons why Mayo didn't win AI. Cillians technique is honed and one of the best in Ireland so no way should he change his style of kicking

I don't think the full story has even been approached by the rags. Maybe when all's said and done a reporter will be able to get someone to go on record about the full story behind this year's AI loss for Mayo.

It's going to be interesting to see who Horan picks on his management team. Is Buckley staying on? Can Mayo even afford him?

Not too sure what real benefit there will be in getting the full story made public, much appears to known/leaked at the stage or certainly speculated on.We can all put two and two together and make four.Errors were made on the sideline and there appears to have been issues within the camp that appear to have been resolved.
I am not sure that satisfying the wider public need for questionable salacious tit bits will help with the learning process. The players, management,County Board and clubs are in the best position to learn from the mistakes made in the All Ireland and apply them.
To be honest I think the bottom line is we were not good enough.
Not sure what the story is with Donie Buckley but with the cutbacks I'm not sure if we can afford him.
Agreed re the excellence of Cillian's freetaking, but in a tight game, time is precious and it is questionable taking that amount of time for a 13 metre free.

Maybe its best to put someone else on the short range frees and just leave the long range frees/45s to O'Connor?

We missed a few easy ones when Cillian was out. Best leaving them to him imo

There was some mad musical chairs, though. Why Kevin McLoughlin (a very talented player, I should say) ended up taking frees when Freeman, easily Mayo's second best free-taker, was on the field I'll never know.

It's better to have a good free-taker even if it's off his wrong foot than it is to have an average free-taker taking free off his 'right' foot. Too many times managers seem to ignore the mental side of free-taking and slice and dice the pitch up too with free-takers and it ends up impeding the confidence of every free-taker.

We must be very slow learners though. We've had plenty of lessons down the years.

Doubt it counts as the first game on home soil, don't think it will count for the season ticket. Not sure though.

I highly doubt it counts, would be a bit of a joke if it did.

Lads, Cork are likely to be down what seems like bloody half their team next year and Sheehan going is huge- a terrible loss for them. Combine that with Kerry being in a rebuilding phase and we really should be making an AI final again absolutely zero excuses.

There'll never be a better year play Cork as they'll likely be a force again in the not so distant future. And Kerry are on the way down. Hopes to be optimistic from our own perspective anyway!

What's the story with Sheehan? Is he emigrating to the land of Oz? Massive loss, he was excellent in the international series and very good in the championship this year.

Yeah, he has signed with Carlton so he'll be meeting up with Zach Tuohy down there.

Really does scream what Mayos problem is and has been for so many years that we have 12 forwards and only is a Mayo County player.

Higgins, Boyle, Aidan O'Shea and Keegan. Fully deserved! Monaghan managed to get an All-Star in the forwards while we didn't even get a nomination, save for O'Connor. Horan knows what he needs to work on next year...
