Just a heads up, Windows 8.1 is now available. When you open up the Store app there should be a large upgrade button should greet you on the front page.

Just finished the installation there. Pretty painless install, and I appear to have gained an extra 20gb free space on my SSD.

Did it clear out or remove your WinSxS folder?

I did, but last I checked it was only around 5GB.

Anyone know what happens if you already have 8.1 Preview installed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20 imronburgundy

I'm stuck at 61% checking compatibility with over an hour. I understand it has to check every app I have installed, but does anyone know how long roughly this should take?

Fresh Windows 8 install then upgrade through the store unfortunately :( . It's why I didn't install the preview

I ran the preview on a tertiary device. It opens up a lot more apps available to download in the store, for one, but the performance was a bit buggy so I stopped using it. I really did like the default new Food app though: plug in ingredients you have, select a cuisine (Italian/French/.etc) and it will generate best fit recipes. Unlike most recipe books where you have to think "I want to make this thing" OK you need cloves, vanilla extract, kiwi fruits - like what I don't know where to buy this **** let alone have it

Tediously the Volume Licence Download Centre has the 8.1 Enterprise & Pro downloads available, but not the Upgrade downloads. Not very helpful, but hopefully they'll become available shortly.

sure enough did free up around 20gb. Im hoping this means they will run a serious cleanup of the OS bloat when I get this up and running on the Surface RT and Pro here.

Had to agree to new terms after the install. didn't like that, seems it shouldve asked before i ran the installer. It included new terms such as new binding arbitration terms for the US.

Went smooth for me apart from the "@ key was switched with this key at the start but, it fixed itself.

worked fine for desktop with retail upgrade. Surface pro is having problems - 0x80070057; going to have to try a reboot, and failing that a reset. RT is still running it.

First impression: thank god it shows dumb people giant popup tips CLICK HERE TO GET TO START. CLICK HERE TO GET TO SETTINGS.

But am still quite mad about something I noticed the other week, 8 and 8.1 both don't allow you to delete saved network settings unless you're in the command prompt, windows 7 had a control panel for that. Also, with 8.1 I seem to have lost the ability to forget a network or set it as metered. Odd odd odd.

Same here. Download was very fast (thank you UPC for the free upgrade to 200mbps this week). Upgrade was smooth, 8.1 seems to be running a bit faster than 8. I'm still using start8 as a start menu, so I don't know if there's much improvement in the windows start button that made its return (it did feck all in 8.1 preview)

Can you delete the Windows.old file?
It's taking up 4GB on my SSD

Yes, Windows.old folder is just a backup of your system as you did a clean install. Once you have all your documents, pictures, music etc. backed up delete away :)

Go into your Admin tools (Control Panel\System and Security\Administrative Tools) and go to Disk Clean-Up. Select the drive the Windows.old folder is on and press okay. Click on Clean up system files and in the list of files to delete it should show your previous installation of Windows.

I have a 45GB skydrive allowance so I just moved all my personal files into that space. I can normally just click format Windows without a second thought these days.

Having a few hiccups. Had to download and install 8.1 versions of both Start8 and Softperfect Ramdisk as the versions I had were not compatible with 8.1

After an hour and a half it finally moved on to the next stage. Took maybe another 40mins before it was all up and running.

Seemed to install without any issues. Cleared about 8GB from the SSD.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86,725 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

I can't seem to find it and nothing comes up when I search for it either..

Is there a Windows 8.1 Pro offline installer?
I've got 2 laptops and a desktop running Windows 8 Pro and I really don't want to waste an extra 7GB downloading it for each machine individually.

I checked my MSDN account but the ISO's for today are for the Enterprise edition.
