It took me less than an hour for download and install and that's on a 5 year old laptop.

That's probably more to do with your broadband speed than your laptop to be fair. I've been downloading it for about 3 hours and it's still only 34% in. I've a .30mbps broadband speed at the moment though which explains it.

I found the link to the download on the windows website in the end. Not sure why it wasn't showing up in the store. I have all the most recent updates installed and everything.

    yes you can

You can use your PC while it downloads and while it is examining your system. Then it reboots to start installing and from then on you can not use your system

For me it was download: about 5-10 minutes, 15 minutes preparation and 15 minutes install. On a nearly 6 year old PC (overclocked). And that was on a conventional SATA drive (that I had cloned my SSD onto, I didn't want to risk my main installation :D)

Before i install can anybody tell me how much does this effect me set up right now,i presume i lose nothing on the hard drive, how much does it effect my setting and say my favourites lists and things like that or my ms office, thanks

Nothing changes. After you install 8.1, it will revert to how everything was setup before, same settings, same documents etc. Obviously the features will be updated and on the home screen you will see there is no longer a messaging app. Other then that, everything including your favourites, will not be lost.

Anyone know what happens if you already have 8.1 Preview installed?

Not correct. Visiting windows.com in IE will allow you to upgrade if it hasn't appeared in the Store yet. All you have to do is reinstall your Apps after. The rest of your data & accounts is preserved.

All my issues sorted, so I've made the final move to 8.1 onto my SSD on my main rig. Working fine, a bit faster than before too and a lot less space taken on my SSD (had to manually clean up some of the mess the installation left behind though, like the windows.old and some other directories)

Funny that several windows updates to 8.1 are already available on the day 8.1 comes out :D

That's because 8.1 has been out for months to manufacturers.

If you installed the 8.1 consumer preview you must do a fresh install. You should have two options to install from memory:
    • Keep existing Files & Settings
    • Nothing
Afaik if you try to upgrade while on the preview build you will only have the "Nothing" option. Your files & stuff will be saved in the Windows.old folder if you choose nothing, but you'll have to re-install all your software, drivers etc.
Edit: I did confuse with my previous post. If your on the consumer preview you must do a fresh Windows 8.1 install is what I meant :) .

I know the laptop is not great but the download took about 5 mins and install about 50 mins.

Yep, just Choose to keep Nothing and it will do a clean upgrade. You will be left with a Windows.old folder (containing the profile backup) which can be safely deleted after

I started the download again this morning and it now says "Getting the update ready"

    Is it still downloading?

EDIT: The progress bar is moving too fast too be still downloading :P

Good call on windows.old, not even sure why that was in there. But another 5gb to spare

edit: for those encountering issues deleting windows.old (Folder Access denied by SYSTEM), follow these steps

    http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2527-windows-old-folder-delete-windows-8-a.html

Surface Pro 2 with a clean reset and 8.1 upgrade, Office 365 and by SkyDrive synced up, 33.5GB Free/50.2GB. Not too bad at all. It was less than half that free space before the update.

Just installed windows 8.1 and already having some problems. The computer seems more sluggish than before and when I open up task manager it seems that disk usage is at 100% almost constantly for the first 10 minutes or so after powering on. Also whenever I open up anything, iTunes for example, the disk usage goes back up to 100% for about 20 seconds and then reverts back to normal. Anyone know what might be causing this?

looks like you have to right click on the new Start button to get the useful menu, left click just seems to bring up the metro tile screen

I couldn't see windows when I was dragging them after the upgrade. Had to upgrade Stardock WindowFX to fix it.

8.1 has messed up the AMD Catalyst setting change that allowed me to have my image in full screen on my LG24EA53.

The AMD image settings program (that had to be updated) now seems to do almost nothing and have no settings to change at all.

    Eugh.

Did you try uninstall and reinstall? I had the same Catalyst issue with scaling.

Uninstall AVG and see if it helps, it could be something as simple as that

messed up my AMD Radeon HD 5800 driver and replaced it with Microsoft driver f**kers

looks like you have reinstall driver from AMD to get Catalyst control Center
    working again

here or the drivers for AMD http://support.amd.com/en-us/download

Trying to upgrade my Surface RT and I got a "Restoring your previous version of Windows" message followed by this error code 0x80004005 - 0x20004.

Anyone else had this? Currently on the 2nd attempt to install 8.1 but not too confident I will have any better luck this time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86,725 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

no the RT ran fine but the surface pro I went and did a reset on before I ran the update

Actually, 2nd time seems to have done the trick. It's finishing the install now and installing my apps.

I'm having a problem with my upgrade. I get a BSOD on reboot. The udate downloads, does it''s thing and then prompts me to reboot. When it gets to the screen where the blue windows/tile symbol should be I get a BSOD saying something about not having enough memory available for a ramdisk....
Then I turn it off by pressing the power button. Reboot and it tell me that it didnt install 8.1 and that my system has been restored like it was before with an error.

    error 0xC1900101 - 0x20017

Annoying. Seems to be pretty common out there.

Looks like I might need to do a system refresh. What's the best way to go about it?

I upgraded from Windows 7 with a Windows 8 Pro key that I bought from Microsoft. I later upgrade the media centre for free with another product key from Microsoft.

Since I dont have the Windows 8 disc I assume I have to Refresh the install by creating a disc/usb drive? Downloaded the Win 8.1setup.exe from the Microsoft website to do this.
I tried this but everytime I put in my product key it says that's not valid.
Am I having trouble because I upgraded from Win 7?
