I may check it out! Anger st has quite a good library.....

Motor related I need to go fill up, tanks a little low!

A good idea to do that now. Filling up the tank at night leaves no room for water contamination in it.

Learned that in class last week. :D

I lucky enough in the fact there a lot of jobs in chemical engineering worldwide. But good to know I know a few lads who have more of an interest in the IT programming side of it than the engineering side of it so I could see them getting jobs in IT. I'm hoping to get into oil and gas ideally or possibly pharmaceutical.

    Talk to this guy ;)

You may unfortunately have to look further a field alright. There is prospects abroad though for engineers and mechanical and energy would be a good mix to have.

Completely off topic but I know there are a few of you in here, may I ask where out IT heads of studied/trained or are in now?
I'm thinking of getting into software development.

Been trying to decide what to do in college for a few years now, this is what's stuck with me.

Cian, I have no degree, started out doing tech support for pc users in a call centre, then moved up over the years.

One thing to be aware of is that if you like software development, or any aspect of IT is that it is continuous education, in the past three years, I have done a total of 19 different exams to add certifications to my bunch that I have and to update existing qualifications.

Same as Stheno, I don't have a degree nor did I ever finish high school.

Different story today. But when I started in IT, there was no course nor education, that could teach me the job I was aiming at.

I literally walked into a telco with a server and desktop under the arm and demonstrated them, that I could setup an ISP business for them :) .. But that's like nearly 20 years ago :D I've since worked for small and big, up to multi-nationals on two continents and nobody would really ask as my CV tells enough.

Today, you will be required to have the certifications at least, which isn't a bad thing. And it is an ever ongoing task of keeping up to date with the matter that is your work environment + re-certification.

One kink has to be considered though: a lot of IT companies will not let you move into management unless you have at least a bachelor degree.

Same for me in terms of the education/certification, up until 2003 people in recruitment asked what I meant in terms of roles I had had, and it's still fairly rare for people to have the qualifications I do.

I'm currently doing a Masters in IT to tick that box on my c.v. but have to say that having the professional qualifications have negated not having a degree, and I've worked in a couple of the large tech companies.

The amount of stuff I have to get done is killing me too. Don't even know where to start with a lot of it :( final year sucks.

I'm another Bolton street dit doing mechanical engineering. By the sounds of it we should have a Bolton street meet :p

The degree doesn't matter until you want to hit management in a large company or multi-national. It can also make a difference when you negotiate your salary.

Small or medium size companies have a different approach.

I've got neither problem these days, as I don't have anybody above me. Should I go into employement again, I might consider sorting the degree out though.

Yeah I've had management roles in the multi nationals, but got away with it due to experience/certifications. the MSc I'm doing is in my area so I get 1/3 of the course as credits, and the workload isn't too bad, it's a pure box ticking exercise to get rid of that gap on the c.v. :) and appease those companies who still insist on a c.v. :)
