She was a care assistant so must have had some level of mental intelligence. The only thing that was on her mind was claiming benefits for her deceased child fraudulently.

She probably did this because she's have to report the child's death, get a death cert etc. I imagine collecting benefits was more about the cover up and not raising flags.

I don't know why people do things like this.

We don't know that, unless we're mind readers.

You can be mentally ill and of high or low intelligence.

If she's ill she'll get treatment and punishment. If she's not ill she'll get punishment. Either way, she's not going to go unpunished.

We don't know if she's mad or bad or both, but she won't walk away from this and nobody is 'excusing' her.

I don't feel any sympathy for her at al.

Are you implying that I do?

But I don't think anyone is saying it is. It might just mean in some cases ultimately being locked up for life in a psychiatric institution which is hardly getting off lightly.

From what I've gleaned from repeated viewings of "One flew over the cuckoo's nest", it could be worse! My point is that attempting to differentiate between degrees of mental instability/outright insanity is dangerous, therefore all extreme (for want of a better word) criminals should be treated similarly.

Certainly not. My youngest is almost 4 and I can't understand stories like this. Breaks my heart to think people like this exist.

The house was covered in ****, rotting matter and rubbish - it's highly likely she's severely messed up in the head. If any person was living like that, it would be agreed they have a few screws loose, but apparently merely acknowledging this is somehow "excusing" her? I still think she should be imprisoned for life so how am I excusing her?

Nope. Some get imprisoned. Others get committed. In the US, some can avoid the death penalty by pleading insanity. None of the outcomes are particularly pleasant, but they are inconsistent.

I think we can all agree on that.

am not a fan of using the term but she certainly doesnt have 'low inteligence', am intelectualy disabled and require twenty four seven support on a two to one support basis with waking night staff in a secure residential care setting.
the entire ID spectrum [known as LD here] is considered the low functioning/low IQ category,if she was low IQ she woudnt be able to support herself in various ways let alone work as a care assistant;which is a demanding job physicaly, mentaly, emotionaly and educationaly [they do lots of paperwork]and also have a husband and child; all of these things are limited by having a limited mental capacity which from own view she shows no signs of at all.

by law in the UK, those of us who are labeled under LD are protected under the mental capacity act;we cannot get married without a legaly binding 'best interest decision' being made, plus the social services childrens team and adult learning disability team also woud have been closely involved with her to help her be a parent,or they woud have rehomed the child.
social services get a bad rap when its split into different teams that work differently;the childrens team may have a lot of issues to work out but the LD team are an incredible bunch of decent social workers,LD nurses and specialists who do keep very close monitoring on those of us on the books because we are considered to be criticaly vulnerable members of society.

Not much chance of a judge ordering a teacher to cane her, to be honest.

She's a junkie and an alcoholic.

Cop on, if weed makes you a junkie, then i'm a junkie.

Weed and booze didnt cause this, her lack of mental stability caused this.

I'm sick of people, regardless of how dispicable they are being called junkies for smoking weed. It's factually incorrect.

God this must be one of the saddest things I've ever read, his picture, those eyes will haunt me.

I can't understand how this level of mistreatment went unnoticed by a PHN, a neighbour, family member...someone!!!
He was 4 years old & fitted into a babygro for a 6-9 month old, from memory they fit babies up to 17-18lbs & nobobdy though this odd.
It's unforgivable to kill a child with just one blow but to systematically starve a child, watch them waste away, listen to their crys of pain...it's on another level altogether.

Sleep tight little man, I hope you're somewhere where you're getting the love you should have gotten here ♡

The latest story is that his own brother saw him eating the contents of his own nappy and how he slept upright in a urine soaked buggy.

I don't care whether she was a junkie, of low intelligence or mentally ill, anyone who commits child cruelty to this level should be sterilised to stop them ever having children again. To hell with human rights, they are not human!! The same thing should be done to Baby P's mother, Daniel Pelkas mother and all those other monsters out there who do that to an innnocent child!!

She's been found guilty of starving her child to death, she was too drunk to attend court on Monday.

Some of the pictures of the house are horrific. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2442539/Mother-guilty-starving-year-old-son-death-leaving-body-decompse-cot.html
