I have a slight chesty cough coming on from last night. I've been taking vitamin C and Vitamin D for the last few months so hopefully that may help

Good stuff, training going well then?

Im aiming for somewhere between 1:40 and 1:45, realistically around 1:42! If you fancy meeting up again for company let me know, but if you'd prefer to run it on your own no worries though! Ill be in and around that group anyway!

I will aiming for same time as you, I'm dreaming of 1:40 but we ll see. Sure we could meet up and start together we ll see how it goes along the race!

I can see a lot of people getting sick here. If this can reassure you better get sick now than end of October ;) I think around this time last year there were similar comments on the thread, I haven't been sick for the whole training period but I had bad tonsilidis just for the marathon and had to pass :( So don't worry if you get sick now, you may have to skip few runs but that won't affect all the work you have done so far ( Your body may actually recover a bit ;) )

I'm in the same boat with a cold at the mo,, but with being sick remember the "Neck Rule"... anything that affects below the neck do NOT train,,,, If its a headcold you are fine to train/race! Infact exercise will actually act as a natural decongestant!!

Jes you must have been gutted to miss out on last year, a shame after all the hard work! Hope this time it all goes well for you. IM hoping to get stuck back into it tomorrow.

What kind of mileage had you been doing up until you got sick?

About 20-25k per week midweek, + 29k on the last long run

sorry to hear about all the colds etc... but as has been said already, better now than in a few weeks;)
Just something to consider... I was getting very very low level throat infections for months and months and got my bloods checked. Everything was fine but my Vit B12 levels were borderline low. I made a concerted effort to up my levels through food and a supplement and said throat infections are now gone. Doctor wasn't even bringing it to my attention as it was in the "ok" category but I got a printout of my results and noticed the actual level was a tiny bit low. Just something to maybe think about upping the Vit B12 levels in the diet and as Gavlor and CM said already, get plenty of Vit C and iron into the diet through food if possible and supplement if necessary. Spinach is a great superfood with lots of iron:) Hope all feeling better soon.
Stepback week for me which I hate but it's a necessary evil I guess. 2 days off the road and I'm depressed and feel like I haven't run in weeks:o Pathetic!

Just back from physio. Bit more needle work done - nowhere near as painful which was a bit of a relief as they aren't nice. Knee pain during stretches almost completely fixed - lots of stretches/exercises added to my regime, more core and back work, and the good news is I have the go-ahead to try a very very slow 20 min run on Mon and if that goes pain free then to do try a 30 min slow run on Weds. Fingers crossed.

Sick all last week, missing all midweek runs and a step back 22k at the weekend. Still sick and recovering slowly, so will miss all this weeks runs including my 19 miler this weekend (planned for Friday due to wedding weekend). Any thought on next weeks training? Should I just pick up that weeks training plan including the 20 miler and ignore the last (lost) 2 weeks training?

You have a reasonable base built up. I'm not sure what plan you're following but in two weeks you wouldn't have lost much fitness. If you have a pace/interval session scheduled for midweek I would skip it and just do all easy runs to make sure you have no lingering sickness and if they go well I don't see any reason why you couldn't do the 20m at the weekend

hey all, would appreciate some advice for the last few weeks before the marathon.

Havent been able to train over the last 3 weeks due to work commitments so I now have 5 weeks to commit properly to this thing. I ran the Frank Duffy 10mile in just under 1:20 but have only ran over 10 miles twice so I need to get some longer distances in over the next two weeks. Running the Dublin Half on Saturday as part of the race series but can anyone advise on what I should aim to do over the coming weeks... I'm thinking

    from Week beginning

23/9 - 2 mid distance runs (around 7 miles and 17 mile LSR on sat)
30/9 - 3 mid distance runs (around 5 miles and 19 mile LSR on sat)
7/10 - 2 mid distance runs (around 6 miles and 21 mile LSR on sat) Would love to do Athlone 3/4 but am away on business. After this I will start to taper distance back
14/10 - 3 mid distance runs (around 6 miles and 10 mile run on sat)
    21/10 - 2 mid distance runs (around 5-6 miles)

I think I need to try and get these 3 weeks big runs to give the legs a idea of the distances. I have found that as I have trained the second time a do a new longer distance it is much easier than the first but I feel that once I go over 13 miles I am struggling.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    Here are my thoughts:
    - you need to increase your midweek mileage. It should be at least the same as the long run distance in total and you should really be able to do at least an 8m run midweek. Can you only train 2/3 days midweek?
    - it's going to be a big jump up to 17 miles (from 13m I presume) so keep the pace slow slow slow and then slow some more
    - other than that it looks ok but you're going to be under prepared whatever runs you do now so recognize that and pace your marathon accordingly. Maybe consider a run/walk strategy

Wow did it get dark quick tonight! Going to have to dig the reflectives out for any runs past 7.30 from here on. 10 miles at marathon pace done tonight and it felt very comfortable :) I'm feeling stronger than ever the past 2 weeks. Now wait for the injury to happen :pac:

I can probably fit in another shorter run plus I play 5 a side one day per week.

That would be better although if you could make it a small bit longer you'd benefit more. The thing about 5 a side football is that it's not going to benefit you much in the marathon because you're mostly doing short fast sprints which is anaerobic work and the marathon is endurance/aerobic

I agree with career_move about avoiding 5-a-side football until after the marathon as the stop/start sprinting involved does not work with long distance running.
I dropped the 5-a-side when I started the training program as the legs needed more time to recover plus with a long distance run each week, you need all the stamina you have.
With almost 5 weeks to go, you should prioritize you training as a mistimed tackle and over exertion during a game could ruin your marathon hopes.

Ran the 20m/32k LSR this morning at 6:30am as I've a wedding today so suspect I'll be hungover tomorrow. Feels great to have it done - thanks for pushing me to do it this weekend career_move and scriba!

As the saying goes: If it's important to you, you'll find a way. If not...you'll find an excuse.

Finished my 18mi LSR this evening at a pace of 10.42/mi.
Reasonably happy with the time as it is the longest I have run so far, did not need to stop unlike the previous 16 mi run and considering I had already ran 18 mi during the week.
Also the weather was a big plus today, no heavy winds and sunshine for the most part.

On the plus side, only 2 longs LSRs left, the 20 mi in the training program and then the DCM so we are all getting closer to the big day :D

Well done on all the long runs today. Very chilled out about HM tomorrow - so not in the "zone". :D Good luck to all running in Phoenix Park tomorrow

Ugh I did a 20m and have another 20m to do this weekend but I would dearly love to run the Charleville HM as it runs through my hometown.

Is it too late in be day to be moving a 20 miler another week on (it means I'd have a 20 next week and the following week).

I'd perfectly happy to run the 20 tomorrow but to run with the family out in force would be great.

    Any advice?

Nah that should be ok. If you do a 2m w/u and 2m c/d you'll have 17m done this week and then you can do 20m next week and maybe do a 2 week taper instead of doing another 20m the week after. Online entries for Charleville close at 3pm today. Are you from Kilmallock?

Yep I'm from there but have lived in Limerick City for an age. Yeah I might just do that so :-)

I wouldn't bother. Back to back 20 milers and a 2 week taper before your first marathon just so you can do a half? I think it's a bad idea, you can do charleville any year.

It won't be back to back 20 milers. It'll be the same as ooter is doing
    Charleville - maybe 16/17 m with w.u and c.d
    20m
    16m
    20m
    Taper - maybe 10 or 12 miles
    DCM
and futureguy has already done a 20m last week so he's in a good place.

Hi, well after been off from running all week I did 4 easy miles yesterday and my LSR of 20m today. It went very well, felt good and like I could have gone on further! The rest must be beneficial. Im delighted as I was losing faith in my ability to do this marathon. Just one 20 miler left and that's in Athlone so kinda looking forward to the change. Hope your recovered Shortstuff and everyone else that was ill. Thanks for the advice.

Now only thing left is for Mayo to win tomorrow and my weekend will be complete, on the other hand a win could put the plan out the window, however I would risk it:P

Awful day for me at the race series. Sickness and stomach cramps from mile 1. No idea what it was as I have never experienced the like before. Finished it but to say it was a struggle is a significant underestimation.

I feel like a bit of a prick complaining though considering the confirmation from DCM that one runner didn't finish and won't be going home to complain either. Absolutely devastated by it and I can only imagine what it must be like for his family. If there is one thing I have learned from everyone on this website is that the running community in Ireland is very close and there is a common bind between every person who steps foot on the start line. Rest in peace my friend.

Well said geekington, shocked about the news today and feel gutted for his family.
may he RIP I have no doubt there'll be a minute's silence/applause for him at DCM.
