Thanks guys! I will find a way to make this work... Even if it means not being able to dance at the wedding Friday (I could do out Friday morning)

I have a wedding on Friday also. My plan is to go out for a run very early on Friday morning, use Saturday as a "Cross" day, i.e. dunking my hungover head in the hotel pool on Saturday, and then do my LSR on Sunday.

Im not sure whether to take it easy at the wedding as DCM is getting closer, or use the wedding as one last hurrah as DCM is still a while away.

If anyone is wondering about the experience of running with a pacer, I wouldnt be too concerned. Pacers bring much more to a race than just keeping the runners speed up - they create a great atmosphere, many will carry extra water for you, they're great for a chat and most of all, their experience is something you cant buy, their knowledge of a course will provide novices with valuable assistance.

While I finished 15minutes behind them, MarthaStew, Kurt (I think) & the other lad I cant remember his name who paced 4.15 in last years DCM dragged my sorry ass most of the way around the course and I couldn't thank them enough. When your spirits are flagging, they will take notice and provide really valuable help.

Thanks for the positive feedback Killian, I'm delighted to say I'm lucky enough to be pacing DCM this year again, I'm joined on the 4 Hour bus by Brain (who joined Kurt and I last year) and Oisin12345 so it promises to be great fun.
I would MOST DEFINITELY recommend running with a pacing group for your first marathon (and that's not just because I'm pacing it) the temptation to run too fast at the start is unbelievable, I know this because my first marathon was DCM 2008 (no pacers:() and I paid for it in the last 8 miles. At the end of the day though it's your marathon and you should run it however you like, as much as I would have preferred to run sensibly in my first marathon I still finished with a smile on my face (although I couldn't run for 2 weeks after because I had pushed it so much at the start)

So who's up for Dublin HM at the weekend, there's a few of us in here I think isn't there?

I'm pacing 1 hour 50 in the Half this weekend so make sure to say hello, I'll be easy to spot because I'll be the only one in pink (unless Meno and Digger decide to wear pink). Mr Stew is pacing 1 hour 40 and he is also really looking forward to it.

A few people talking of lack of motivation in here at the moment. It's getting tougher now alright, feel the same way myself sometimes, but just got to keep the ultimate goal of DCM at the forefront of our mind, Try and make it to a group LSR if you can too, great boost for motivation if your used to training solo!!

We're almost over the peak now anyway and then an easy downhill to the start line! ;)

So who's up for Dublin HM at the weekend, there's a few of us in here I think isn't there?

I'm in a bit of slump as well at the moment. With a cold last week I ran on Tuesday and felt crap, then took the following few days off. I had a wedding at the weekend and didn't manage to get out for my LSR of 20 miles. So last night I tackled the 20 miles and it was torture. I was feeling it from mile 10 onwards and I shuffled around for the last 5 miles. 9 days earlier I had completed 18 miles with no problems. So this is quite demoralising. I'm hoping the poor performance is down to the head cold I have which I still haven't managed to shake off.

I'm running the HM this weekend too. Will try to follow the 1 40 pacers.

What's the general rule of thumb with mcmillan and first time marathon runners,if you run say 1:45 in the HM next Saturday what time should you be realistically aiming for in DCM?

I see a lot of talk about McMillan calculators on here. If it's your first marathon then be conservative..... Just remember that there's a big difference between a 10 miler or HM and a 26.1 - You will only ever have one first marathon but lots of others for better times/pb's

Check this thread out re HM's/1st marathon

Hi Marthastew, I joined your OH at last years HM and I was delighted to finish in 1:59:xx. I never got a chance to thank your OH as I was fairly knackered and elated at the end. I'm hoping to get under 1:55 on Saturday. I'm planning to join your group and hold on as long as I can. If I can keep you within sight as far as Military road I'd be fairly happy and should be able to get well under my target.

Did a bit of a Tempo run this morning 1km warm up, 5k and then a 1km cooldown. Did the 5K in 23:50. The 5k time is about 60seconds faster than a 5K race I did last year, so I can't complain with that.

An easy 8k tomorrow and then I might leave it at that until the HM. Can't say I'm looking forward to the HM but my 5k time has given me a little bit of confidence that my training is coming to fruition

Hi, have a rotten cold and have nt run since Saturday, Im afraid it will lead to a sinus infection. Im following career moves plan. Im hoping to get the 20 miler done at weekend and maybe 2 other runs if I feel better. Will I try to carry over this weeks miles to next week or forget about them? have nt missed many other runs in the plan.

Sorry to hear your unwell. My advice would be to let them go. You'll only tire yourself out trying to fit them in next week. If you can get 20 done this weekend super but be careful you don't overdo it if you're not 100%

Great thanks for that, I will hold off till Friday to see how I feel, hoping the rest will do the trick. One more question: have a choice between the Athlone 3/4 or Galway Bay 1/2, which do you think would be most beneficial? Have not ran a half marathon since May which I did in 1hr 52.

Athlone 3/4. I'd say you'd run a faster half marathon now if you've followed most of the plan so far but head off with the '4hr' pacers maybe and then you don't have to worry about what pace you're running and you'll get a great workout for DCM :)

I'm in the same boat, sick since Sunday:( So frustrating. Doing everything I can to make sure I'm ok to do the 20LSR Saturday & then back on track, if that means missing a few shorter runs this week so be it... Can't risk getting seriously sick and ruining the rest of the plan. I wouldn't carry any runs over, only risking injury... Fingers crossed well both feel better soon!

Hi short stuff, its very stressful not been able to run! Hopefully the break will do the trick for us! Is this your 1 st 20 mile run? I did one 2 weeks ago, it was tough enough so was hoping to see progress with this one!

    Question about the P & D 12-week schedule (55 miles).

    For tonight, the schedule prescribes a 6 mile 'recovery + speed' run consisting of 6 miles with 6 x 100 m strides p. m.
I would interpret this to mean 6 X 100 metres strides every mile of the 6 miles. Is this correct? Seems like a lot of strides.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,704 ✭✭✭✭RayCun

No, just 6 x 100m towards the end of the 6 miles recovery

Thanks, that makes sense. The p. m. bit confused me.

I will be there, looking forward to it actually, hoping for a PB below 1h45 and this will confirm or not if I have the potential to run DCM in 3h45.

Yeah hopefully! Feeling a bit better today but still no voice & chest cough:( Got 1 20miler in the weekend before last, was a struggle towards the end but I had purposely but a large climb in around the 17mile mark, otherwise I'd say I'd have been ok. Think I'll go with a slightly different route this time & throw that hill into my final 20miler before taper:D Will go slightly faster on the 20miler since my 1/2 was such an improvement, I'm fond of slooow though!!

Good stuff, training going well then?

Im aiming for somewhere between 1:40 and 1:45, realistically around 1:42! If you fancy meeting up again for company let me know, but if you'd prefer to run it on your own no worries though! Ill be in and around that group anyway!

Im hoping to be somewhere in between the 1:40s and 1:50s groups, closer to the 1:40s though. So if you happen to creep up on me and im struggling make sure to give me a good kick up the a$$!

My God - we're all sick! I took the last 2 days off and went back to it tonight. Felt all the better for the rest and now looking forward to HM on Saturday. Decided skipping 1 or 2 shorter runs wasn't going to do me any harm,

Glad to hear the rest does good! I don't know when I had 4 days off before and I doubt I will be fit for tomorrow either! Anyways no point worrying about it, take care.

Sick all last week, missing all midweek runs and a step back 22k at the weekend. Still sick and recovering slowly, so will miss all this weeks runs including my 19 miler this weekend (planned for Friday due to wedding weekend). Any thought on next weeks training? Should I just pick up that weeks training plan including the 20 miler and ignore the last (lost) 2 weeks training?

What kind of mileage had you been doing up until you got sick?
