Boston truly is a classy town, the pre game Rivera stuff is just terrific. While I would not be the biggest fan of either team the fans in Boston are quality.

I know it's just the Astros......but Johnny Cueto looked pretty good lastnight, considering that he hasn't pitched in almost 3 month.......5 inning shutout on 80+ pitches.

    Are you sweating yet Ollie?

Not really.....though ask me again on Thursday......2 more against the Astros for the Reds and 3 games in 2 days for the Nationals against the Braves, if things go our way, the Nationals little rally could be done after tomorrow.

besides, the Reds get to play the mets next week.

Ha Ha, yeah there's 3 in the bank for you!

If the Nats go 11-2, that'll get them to 90 wins and that'll probably be a stretch for them to do that but even if the did, the Reds should have no trouble going 6-5 to get to 91, especially as they have 5 against the Mets/Astros.

In other, non-contender news (and probably of no interest to anyone other than Mets fans), Matt Harvey is going to try and avoid surgery and try to rehab his dodgy arm.

I think it's just delaying the inevitable and he's better off getting it over and done with and come back in 2015 raring to go.

Atlanta helping us out with a slow and steady comeback......just hope those 1 run innings don't drain all their energy before the nightcap

Kimbrel, who has probably been the best closer all year is having a nightmare. Bases loaded and no one out. A base hit probably levels this up.

I was half expecting a big emotional victory for Washington considering the events of yesterday

I was just reading an article in SI about how Simmons is probably the best defensive shortstop in the game and bang on cue, he lets one through his legs and gives the Nats the win. I know everyone get bad days every now and then but I don't remember seeing Kimbrel struggle that badly.

I'm really surprised that he was still in the game after loading the bases.....and even more after the first run scored

He has done well to stay away from Dr. Andrews scalpel for now!

Let say he goes away, rehabs and doesn't require surgery. Do the Mets sign some free agents in the off season to push them towards contending?

I don't know. Theres a lot of holes to be filled (2 corner outfielders, 1st base, shortstop) and I don't know enough about who's available to know if this is a good free agent year or not. One thing about Sandy Alderson is he won't spend money for the sake of spending money so the price must be right before he'll sign someone. One good thing is that Santana and Bay's $40m will be off the books so the option to spend or not is there at least.

Either way, I doubt they'll fill all the position but they have good pitching both in the majors and on the way up so while I think 2014 will be better than this year, I doubt they'll contend.

For that reason, I think harvey should just get the surgery done now and get it over with. He's a Met, things never work out so it's only a matter of time before he blows it out completely and that'll put 2015 when they could contend at risk.

    Harvey should have it done.

In other news the Nats are only 4.5 back! We're coming for you Ollie :-)

Was watching the baseball and there were several save situations last night.

    But that's not my point.

9th inning, the closer we will say walks the first batter.

Closer starts pitching to the next man and the commentators say the first guy has advanced to second on fielders indifference. You look and there he is on second.

Why do the defense allow this to happen? I don't understand it at all. Surely you want to keep him at first and also try to pick him off if you can. Never give an inch surely?

I'd imagine in most cases, the fielding team are up by more than one run and there are 2 outs meaning it doesn't matter if the first guy (now on second) scores. The pitcher is focusing on getting the batter out.

Although if there is no one out like in the situation you describe, I don't know what's going on.

    Thanks for the explanation

Possibly there were two outs and I'm not remembering it exactly.

It was the early hours :)

Two seasons into baseball and I still have so much to learn!

Not only did Billy Hamilton steal 4 bases last night......2 of them were on pitch-outs

There doesn't even need to be 2 outs.....as long as the team has a decent lead, they won't worry about holding runners.

Managers don't like to have their closers worry about base runners, they are there to concentrate on the batter and get outs.

    He has ridiculous speed.

    He has ridiculous speed.

His speed is unbelievable but his acceleration just as important......Ricky Henderson wasn't the fastest runner in baseball but he was at full speed after just a couple of strides.....it looks like it only takes Hamilton 2 or 3 steps to get to full speed.

True he has immediate speed off the mark, the jump he gets is often ridiculous though. Fastest base runner i've ever seen!

Only a half inning into the game, and we already have a successful hidden ball trick in Colorado

    SOX BACK IN THE PLAYOFFS!!!

Certainly didn't expect that after last season. If I wasn't getting married in a couple of months I'd be breaking the bank to get over for it.

Going to be a few late nights. Think we have a very good chance of the ALCS if pitching stays on form. Probably shouldn't look that far ahead but it's exciting!

Great season for the Red Sox.

5 games back now, with the pirates one further ahead and the two teams to play 6 times .. this could get very interesting!

I like your optimism but it's still a long shot to make it. The Nats will probably have to go 6-0 or 5-1 on the road at St. Louis and Arizona and hope one of the Pirates/Reds sweep those 6 games or at least take 5 of them.

As the magic number's only 5, the Reds could knock off 3 of them against the Mets in their other series. Although Cubs are well capable of playing spoilers and mess it up for the Pirates, especially if they are rattled after a bad series against Cincinnati so that could be your best bet there.

ah realistically with 9 games left we probably cant do it, it would take a monumental tanking from either the reds or pirates and we'll have to win every game, what would be really interesting though would be if the pirates took 3 from 3 against the red and the nats sweep the marlins. that leaves 2 in it with 6 games to go :-)

I doubt it.....even if the Reds only take 1 of 3 in their two series against the pirates and 2 of 3 against the Mets, that would leave the Nationals needing to win out the rest of the year.

Winning out is possible Ollie especially the way they've been playing of late, unfortunately it's their own fault that they are in this position.

Oh to be a american league team! We'd be half a game out of the wildcard positions!

Of course I'd love to see the Reds sweep the Pirates and the Nationals sweep the Cardinals.....that' would probably put the Nats in the WC and the Reds in first place in the central
