I never understood the obsession with anime, I can understand someone liking it but people seem to get really into it.

Full Metal Alchemist, Full metal panic, Ghost in the Shell, Black Lagoon, Gundam ... are amongst my favourites. These shows have great stories, awesome animation, bit of humour and depth. Worth seeing if you're an anime fan.

that was a heavily edited american version of Gatchaman, but yeah, that counts ;)

It's just that good! I mean, watch this:

I don't think I "got" Evangelion, spent the whole time watching it with an expression like, am I holding this thing the right way up. Loved Spirited Away but that's pretty main-stream and enjoyed Ghost in the Shell. Couldn't get into Death Note.

I thought Otaku was the pejorative of choice in Anime circles.

Was big into anime growing up, Channel 4 and Sci-Fi channel used to show all sorts and the really violent stuff like Violence Jack, Fist Of The North Star, Ninja Scrolls, Akira, Sohryuden: Legend of the Dragon Kings, Guyver, Genocyber, and a bunch more I can't remember names off.

They were always on at obscure hours so it was like a rare treat seeing them.

I remember back then, the stuff they'd release would be only the extremely violent crap. you got absolute gems like Akira, but there was so much OTT nonsense. still remember seeing Wicked City :p

this might be worth a little nostalgia:

being the big weeaboo I am, it's no surprise I'm quite the anime fan. I've a lot of friends who are quite the anime nerds too, and I think I've also converted the other half, who's really been enjoying watching shows like Fullmetal Alchemist and Elfen Lied

but I find it a little odd that there doesn't seem to be as many anime fans on boards, or at least they don't talk about it much. the anime & manga forum right now is like a place tumbleweeds go to die. since there's such a big overlap between anime fandom and general nerdiness, you'd expect there'd be a lot more interest?

So I thought I'd ask AH!
    Do you like anime?
If so what shows/movies are your favourites?
What genres do you go for?
And if you're not too familiar with anime, what are your impressions of it/the fandom? would you like to get into it?

Currently we're watching Monster, which is a psychological thriller about a Japanese neurosurgeon living in Dusseldorf, Germany, who saves the life of a little boy who's been shot in the head. 3 of the senior staff at the hospital are murdered and the little boy goes missing, with the Japanese doctor suspected. years later he's suspected of a series of brutal serial murders of middle-aged couples, and goes on the run from police to try and piece together what's happening himself. not even half way through it yet, but it's such a dark show and draws you in so much.

also been watching Attack on Titan which I'm sure I don't need to say is all kinds of awesome :D

Mad - I opened up my first episode of monster just before this thread. (vostfr pour eux qui apprennent Francais)
I had watched deathnote - which was my first manga/anime series.

Deathnote was good, a kind of Columbo mixed with far fetched manga.
I didn't finish it though, I lost some interest after the death of a key character, which pssed me off. Grrr I war so angly.

    careful of spoilers ;)

I know I've gotten gasps because of it before, but I have not watched yet Death Note :( I will, it's one of the first things I want to watch once I'm finished Monster! That and Steins;Gate

I always found anime storylines to be more enticing than western ones, I think a lot of the time the shows are more down to the ground, ie the characters are more akin to us and in some ways we can relate to them, which makes the shows more attractive (in my eyes anyway). I love me some Anime & Manga.

A lot of the stuff does go OTT though, but at least Japan have the balls to do it!

I used to watch it but found most of it a bit crap and weird. I liked Cowboy Bebop.

Didn't see Gurren Lagann either :o There's actually a lot I've not watched, especially some of the more popular ones.

I plan to watch the Rebuild of Eva at some point though, but I don't know, I couldn't sit through the series.

If you like Attack on Titan I highly recommend Gurren Lagann, I get the impression Titan takes a lot of inspiration from Gurren Lagann. The main characters are fairly similar too. Both are fantastic :)

Some of my favourites are Cowboy Bebop, Welcome to the N.H.K, Outlaw Star and Gurren Lagann.

I regretted starting to watch Attack on Titan, I didn't realise at the time there were only a handful of episodes made. It's way too laden with cliffhangers to watch week on week without going crazy so I've decided to not watch anymore until there are a good few episodes to get through. Really awesome show tho, as long as they don't do a Bleach on it then it could become one of the greats.

yup! but be careful if you've taken a lot of drugs and then watched FLCL or Paranoia Agent

god I really hope not, there's really nothing worse than when a show drags it out beyond all sense, so I really hope the show will have a resolution

I used watch a lot and I mean a lot but enver any more. Monster was definitely up there. Hajime No Ippo and Topgen Gurren Langen.... (however you spell it) were probably my faves though. Oh and Gundam WIng that was actually my favourite - unbelievable what they put together on that one.

You know, a thread on here and another forum gave me an idea.

The other forum has a book reading club, and there's a thread here called the ah Friday movie night or something.

I wonder could we do something like that here? Have a weekly anime where we all, and newcomers welcome, watch online in a chatroom environment?

IF we pick a show that's relatively new and only comes out weekly, then it could be pretty cool.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 430 ✭✭MOC88

I started out with Initial D, and then progressed to Evangelion immediately afterwards. My mind has been warped ever since. :o

Oh God initial D how could I forget ... I downlaoded the whoel soundtrack for driving around - definitely some cringeworthy moments

well I'm really glad I started this thread, the weeaboos are coming out of the woodwork! :pac:

Hmmm, I wonder are there any good animes coming out soonish that will be translated within a day or two of release?

I don't think one with a few episodes will work. I remember kind of speed watching Attack of The Titan.

And there is the debate of subbed and dubbed.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,944 ✭✭✭✭Links234

Instead of picking a current, ongoing series, you could pick an established one that is relatively short, or even pick a movie? For example, you could pick the new Berserk or Evangelion movies?

As for subbed or dubbed, its subbed all the way ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 171 ✭✭Tweej

The only anime I've ever watched, excluding Pokemon/Yugioh/mainsteam things, is Death Note which is a good'un

Where would you see these movies though. Online steaming? Netflix?

Hmmm, i think he embedded a youtube video to a chatroom site?

True, that would work much better.

    EDIT:

Hmmm, I just checked it out and a) It's in Beta, and B) it only supports Vimeo and Youtube media. But, I have no idea what that actually means :P

Cowboy Bebop is just incredible, one of the best shows ever ;)

that's what I love about anime, a lot of time they've just got such a solid storyline and reach a conclusion or resolution. you couldn't get a more perfect ending than Bebop, and it really stays with you. I hate a show that just keeps on going until it's worn out whatever spark it had to begin with

I think one of the reasons I stopped watching for a while was because of Bleach and Naruto. Just dragging on for too long and all the fillers. I take a look at manga now and then at this point. Just don't have the time now to watch stuff. Reading is faster
