I know.. I've only been for 3 appointments so far but I've paid him like €600... Orthodontists are really overpaid.. I know they spend years at college, I spent 6 but its mental what they charge

Does the ortho give them a good clean once the braces are off or do you need to to visit dentist on same day??
Bit worried as have been quite bold with the coca cola and ciggies, worried about getting big marks.

^ He gives a bit of a clean..but that's mainly to get the glue off! I booked in a cleaning with my dentist for next week anyway. Luckily I had no stains..but I was I bit obsessive about cleaning/hygiene :o

why has it taken so long Funky Monkey? Good luck in Sept took me a good few months to get used to having them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,388 ✭✭✭funkey_monkey

They did not process the paper work and I didn't realise until they phoned me wondering if I still wanted to go ahead with treatment - 3 months after I accepted the plan and told them to go ahead. So it has been now about 6 months waiting for treatment :(

Finding that now my bite is changing I'm clenching a lot which is resulting in awful headaches, I'm praying it will pass

I got the metal braces , you'll be grand. It will be worth it when you start seeing the results

Lottie - were they very noticeable? I'm having second thoughts as I don't want to look like Jaws and wondering if I should have opted for something mroe discrete...

Yeah for the 1st few days I was paranoid, but then I got used to them.

Tbh I had to point them out to some people cause they didn't even notice.

Seriously you'll be grand it's so worth it. I'm about five months in now and the change in my teeth already is unreal

I had bad headaches for a week there a while back due to clenching. They are gone now , that was the only bump in the road for me so far

Go for it, you won't regret it. I just had my braces removed and the difference in my teeth and face is incredible. I am so glad I went through with it!!

As others have said throughout this thread, other people won't care you have braces so don't worry.

The cleaning and mainteance does take some time to get used to but it becomes part of your daily routine and is very benefical in the long run.

What could you not eat? I hear that you can't eat apples any more unless they are cut up.

What about your retainer - what type did you get?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 311 ✭✭LottieP25

I don't eat apples anyway cause my front teeth are crowned.

But cut them up , still taste the same.

    I don't have a retainer

Part of the reason for me getting braces was that I was told I would get a retainer which was similar to a bruixim guard for grinding teeth during sleep. I've almost wore through the one i have currently - which I wear 99.99% of the time.

I was told I get 2 retainers and these would double as a bruixim guard. However, I have heard of people getting fixed retainers which I think are strips which are glued to the back of the teeeth. Can anyone please confirm what they got?

    Thanks.

Yep, this is what I have. It's a thin strip bonded to the back of the teeth, only had top done. Braces have been off about 3 months and I'm back eating pretty much what I was eating (although thanks to braces I've given up the crisps!) before.

As with the whole braces process it's no big deal :)

Get the braces, you won't regret it.

Well they are in now and the countdown to removal has started already.

I'm still in a state of shock as to the ugliness of the metal braces - makes it even more awkward that I'm in my 30's. My mouth/lips are dry and I cannot close my mouth easily - it is a conscious effort to get the lips to meet.

So, it looks like it will take between 9 - 12 months for treatment to complete. I was hoping for quicker, but the horse has bolted now. In terms of feel, there is no tighness yet - no feeling of contraction on the teeth - which is a bit odd - just the feeling that something is preventing my lips from their natural position.

What confuses me is that the braces do not go all the way to the rear teeth and there doesn't appear to be what I think is called a molar ring. Why would this be - I only noticed when I left the place and am not due back for a month.

The only thing that currently keeping me sane is that the metal braces are 20% of the cost of clear braces.

Just tried to eat my first meal and it wasn't pretty. Can pitta bread be eaten okay with braces?

I have build ups on two molars, that feels really weird:D
My jaw closes 10mm less and for the first week I couldn't chew anything.:pac:

I don't have molar rings either, just more brackets bonded to my molars. There's brackets on all my teeth except the wisdom teeth but the wire only goes back as far as the second last molar. I only have the bottom one on yet though.

Is that for just the for brace without the labour? For ceramic braces I had to pay €500 extra.

It is all in. Which I also assume to include any capping of teeth required for alignment, labour and a retainer.

I don't really want to pursue this train of thought, but...
metal braces are 20% of the cost of clear braces.

That figure doesn't seem right if your talking about metal vs ceramic.
    Maybe ceramic cost 20% more?

Unless you mean invisalign or lingual?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,388 ✭✭✭funkey_monkey

No. I got NHS treatment which is metal only. Fifth of cost of clear braces which can only be got privately.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 793 ✭✭✭pillphil

Ah, I was hoping I was wrong but couldn't see how:D
No NHS for me. Medical card might have covered them pulling all my teeth out.
Had to go private. I was told 12 months as well, but I assumed he was lying to either:
    1. Get the full payment out of me as quick as possible or
    2. Make me more likely to go ahead with it.

I thought 18 months - two years was pretty standard. I know it depends on the severity of the case, but I didn't think my case would be on the lower end. 100% overbite and severe crowding. Then again, I'm not an orthodontist.

I'm still going to expect 18 - 24 months though.

Just tried to eat dinner there - open mouthed slobbering :( I am now seriously wondering what I have got myself into here. Freaking out more than a bit.

Don't be freaking out. Give it time and you'll get used to them once you get in to a routine with the brushing and the eating. You won't even notice them after a while, and 9-12 months is no time compared to how long you will have nice, straight teeth. Once you start to notice them moving you'll be delighted.
Hang in there, it's well worth it.

The first few days are the worst. I spent them only eating ice cream.

Take a look at these, and bear in mind my overbite was much deeper so mine are bigger. None of my teeth meet except where the turbos meet the lower teeth.

I haven't eaten anything like an apple, but I'm eating normally again. During the first day I didn't think that would happen.

Getting freaked out by the [prospect of having them on for almost a year. Its a long time and I'm now regretting not getting something more discrete.
