Picking this up during the week but I'm trading my iPhone in for it on the day so what's the best way to keep as much as possible off my iPhone?

Note that if you buy the Google Play Edition you'll be on stock Android and have no Sense 5.
Sure, Sense isn't for everyone, but just be aware that you'll be losing a lot of the advertised features.

Don't think the Google edition is available in the UK either. The big selling point of this phone for me are the zoes which aren't available on the GE.

    Righty,

For some reason I'm not able to install .apk files I've downloaded. I've allowed the Unknown Sources and turned on Developer Options, but for some reason I keep getting a message saying "Can't open File."

Anyone got a fix for this?

try downloading the apk again. check the size of it. sounds like you have a corrupt download.

It's happened with two other files sadly. I'll redownload it in a bit and check again.

Had to do a full data wipe and reset of my phone as I had that storage issue whereby I had a lot of duplicate files on my internal SD after installing ARHD..pita but I gained back 10gb so worth it.

If you check under storage and see under Other..on avg it should be 6-7gb taken up.

I do the same as you, and can never seem to kill these apps, I think they always have to run in the background as somewhere along the line, you (we) gave them permission to constantly collect data or something... I found that some apps always run in the background and really drained my battery, i hardly used them as well, like Vevo, so I just deleted them.

I use Go Power Master on my home screen which has a nice 'stop processes' button and i press that every now and then to kill other apps that start running without me knowing. it normally says things like: killed 30 processes and extended battery time by 50mins. but then i press it 5 mins later and 5 have sneaked back... argh!

I did try using Advanced task killer which was more effective, but I found that my phone started to get bugs and behave in weird ways and i had to restart, as i think it killed a few tasks that the phone has to run to work properly...

Task killers are bad news on Android, you end up getting into a cycle of killing a task and then it restarting again. Best bet is often to freeze with Titanium if you're rooted.

Put Android Revolution Hd on it...same as stock but tweaked battery etc plus you can wake it up with the volume buttons..really really nice.

My intention was to keep my new One stock for as long as possible. That said, I got home from the shop with it, set it up and was annoyed straight away because I didn't have any of my data from my old phone.
Within 2 hours I unlocked the boot loader, attempted root (which wasn't 100% successful) then installed android revolution Rom. I restored my titanium backup of apps and feel right at home again.

I am totally one of those people who has to have root and can't really explain the benefits to a lay person.

And android revolution is totally rock solid.

ARHD should be rock solid, it's just a stock ROM. It takes longer for him to upload the ROM than apply his tweaks to it.

Why can't I have my home screen as the screen with time on top and my 4*4 panel of apps (see attachment 1944)? I've tried in settings but this isn't an option?

Also from this screen I think it'd be handy if I could scroll left (or up twice) to view my feeds.

last thing/rant- if I organise apps into folders why isn't this replicated into the 'scroll left/right layout (see attachment 1945)?

    Cheers,
    pa.

You want your app drawer to be your home screen? It's only a press of a button away, so is easy to access anyway.

You can organise your apps into folders and then drag the folder onto your homescreen, don't think they stay in sync if you make changes after that.

Can anybody advise what's the easiest way to back up all my data, settings, bookmarks, pics, videos etc before I unlock the bootloader?

Rooting and unlocking bootloader won't wipe your phone. Once you are rooted just do a nandroid backup of your phone, saving its factory state. Things you wouldn't want to lose like pics and vids should be backed up to dropbox.

Sometimes weird things can block app installs. I know that if I have screen filter app working on my phone, I can't install an app.

Are you rooted? People who switched from android to 4.1.2 to 4.2.2 often had storage problems due to not upgrading cleanly. If so, I would completely wipe your SD card and flash from clean. I wrote a guide here.

    http://trickdroid.org/trickdroid-6-0-android-4-2-2-and-your-sd-card/

If you're not rooted, then chances are that space is getting taken up by something you've put on it, you'll just have to use a file explorer to figure what it is.

I just installed Astro File manager and installed it directly from the SDCard and not the Notification menu.

Strange fix, but that managed to sort it out.

AirDroid easily. No need to mess about with cables or anything.

Tasker. Rooting gives you access to the widest possible feature set - for example, you can set your keyguard to become inactive when connected to your home wifi.

Are there plans for an update?

The One came with Jelly Bean (4.1.2) and most have updated to 4.2.2.

The only devices that have gone to 4.3 are Google Edition One's, which O2 don't sell.

You will have to wait for HTC to release it first. While the latest version of Android is 4.3, HTC and other companies will take months to a year to get it on their devices.

The only way to get the latest version of Android is to get a Nexus device, or root your One and install the Google Edition Rom (which is 4.3)

They're a good bit cheaper on eBay. Won't work with some cases unless they're fairly flat. Not sure if it will grip the curved back of the HTC One.
