Good thing is a lot of people have bought 7950's over the last 12 months, so picking up a second hand one for reasonable money is a good upgrade-especially if looking at a 1440 monitor. So it should be easy enough to sell yours..

Shiieet that's tempting me and I literally just bought my two 7950's for about €570 or so.. Damn it :P

How do they perform? Have you overclocked them? 2 7950s for that money isn't bad like. Overclocked they will almost match a 7990 at the cost of more power.

    And more heat.

Yes I've Overclocked them - If I remember correctly I had them 1130 / 1600 but not entirely sure if it is 100% stable. Was playing CS:GO the other day and it kept crashing every half hour or so forcing me to restart my computer.

I reduced the OC substantially, but also verified the game cache in steam and all seems okay now.. will slowly bring the OC back up and see what happens.. :p

Haven't played anything demanding yet.. I've got exams to worry about so games aren't a priority at the moment.

Repeat exams? I have 4 to do myself :/ Note to self: attend college next semester. :P

Can you up the voltage to make them stable at 1130? Upping the voltage is probably not worth it due to the extra heat. they're probably fine at 1100mhz, id leave them there personally, that's a ton of performance. Have you used them in any graphically demanding game? Crysis?

How hot do they get? Do you have good airflow? I'm just sizing up if its worth it for me to get another 7950 in the future :P

Yessir, two of them.. One on Monday and one Friday week.. :( Bricking it for the Friday one.. failer that one horribly first time round

I could do, but as you said more voltage means more heat. During benchmarking with Heaven I've seen temps reach 75 max.. Which isn't bad considering that was two cards @ 100% capacity.. Reckon I could bring it down to 70 max if I upped the built in fans to full speed but by God they are noisy above 50%..

No, as I said just CS:GO.. Only built the computer recently but I know very well that if I start one of the games from my huge backlog I wont want to stop playing.. College just gets in the way :o

I've got pretty good air flow.. 2 x Front intake, 1 x side intake, 1 x back exhaust, 1 x top exhaust.. Still have space for two more fans.. One bottom beneath the cards which I reckon I will pop in soon, and one more top exhaust but it seems relatively pointless due to the direction of my air flow (Bottom flowing to top).. I could probably use it as an intake but that too seems pointless as all the air would just go directly into my cpu cooler intake..

That all sounds good tbh. Max of 75 with both cards maximally stressed is fine. I'd stick with stock volts and ~1100mhz. With good scaling that's pretty much 7990 performance, maybe a tad less.

I must start studying this week :( And so little time as I'm working full-time due to coop.

How reliable do second hand cards tend to be? Where's the best place to get them?

Not in the market at the moment due to poverty but, with the new drivers, another 7950 in 6 mths to a years time could be just the ticket.

As reliable as any other second hand item. With a bit of luck, and an honest seller, you get fantastic bang for buck. With the opposite, you can get screwed over with no recourse.

Generally speaking, with a bit of cop on, there are good deals to be had in the second hand market. I sold a 460 768MB to a college friend of mine about 10 months ago for 85 euro. He got a great deal (card still working) and I got half my money back on a 2 year old card :).

Depends on where you pick one up, depends on the life they've had. I would be hesitant to buying one off a benchmark junkie for instance.:)

Adverts.ie is a good place to keep an eye on, plenty of reputable sellers (though a few chancers as well).

Plan on picking up the Corsair Carbide 540 soon, planned on getting new RAM and a HDD 1TB or >

Any suggestions? Looking at some ADATA ram. But not sure the differences of HDDs

There's only two choices really for a 1TB hard drive. The WD 1TB blue WD10EZEX and the Seagate 1TB 7200.14 ST1000DM003.
They're much the same in performance. Both beat each other in some benchmarks.

Desktop higher rev drives are slower since they haven't been updated. The WD Black is slower since it hasn't been updated. Enterprise drives aren't worth the money.
Low rev drives, e.g., WD Red are good but not what I'd go for as main storage.

RAM is much the same, whomever it comes from. Try to get 1.5V and not above to avoid issues. Also avoid huge heatspreaders. Finally, high speeds make little difference on Intel systems unless they are overclocked.

Friend suggested the WD Black, even of I was to go for 2 or 3 TB would blue still be my best bet? Like OS and important stuff is on my SSD

The blacks are supposed to be better, but they're not. They're actually quite a lot slower.
If you're thinking of the larger sizes, seagate might be a better option. I'd have to double check to see what lines WD have updated above 1TB capacities.
Alternatively, the WD Red are still a good option if you have a big SSD... they're probably faster than the blacks even though they're a lower rev but a newer generation.

SSD is 120gb so not massive. Was considering adding another one in eventually, probably not a good idea. Think I'll get 1TB Blue and see how it goes frp, there/, can always biy another if I need.

Off hand, would you have any RAM suggestions?

If you're not buying anything else, try memoryc or amazon.co.uk have a few deals now and again.

This if you want to go cheap:
    http://www.memoryc.com/computermemory/ddr3ram/8gbgeildragonrampc312800dualkit1600mhz.html

This is good speed for the money:
    http://www.memoryc.com/computermemory/ddr3ram/8gbgeilpc314900evocorsa1866mhzkit.html

Or this if you want a reasonable all rounder:
    http://www.memoryc.com/computermemory/ddr3ram/8gbgskillddr3pc312800ripjawsxseriesforsandybridge.html

Or course, if you're ordering a big load of stuff, hardwareversand and other places are often cheaper when you spread out shipping across a load of items.

Sure. I imagine the 780 will get slightly better than the 770, basically run any 1v1 map early game and you should have several hundred FPS. Doesn't have to be particularly scientific. I only have ~100FPS. Depends on the map ofc. Some ~90. It is poor performance comparatively and there should not be a situation where I am graphically bound and below 60FPS in sc2.

1v1 map i was getting 130-140 fps everything max.
you sure hes running everything ultra?

Wtf. That lines up with AMD apparently being better adapted for SC2 (according to Linus's benches) in conjunction with the 780 being quite a bit faster than the 7950.

Hmmm. I assume you have a capable CPU? Anything modern and overclocked will easily limit the GPU in the game.

This requires more investigation. I must check if he is actually maxing it out. He's not tech illiterate at all, he knows more than me I would say. Hmmmmm....

    Thanks anyways.

    Edit:

Do you mind screenshotting the early game FPS for me on the map?

What in the fook. That seems realistic when compared to a 7950. Thanks!

Any reason you have your 3570k at 4.3ghz instead of 4.5/6?

since i still have(lol) to buy a second 780, new audio equipment, and a 1tb ssd and i dont know how im going to cool 2 GPUs and a CPU in a 350D :pac:

Point taken. I have all of the above (minus the 780) to buy, as well as a new server, so I know where you're coming from.

But I already have the watercooling. Mwuhahaha!
