Taken for the Cathedral ( I think) back of St John'S Sq, rear of what was Mr Binmans.

Edited to add, if you click on the photo in the link I provided, the location appears on the top right corner. Hope I didn't destroy all your guesswork.

There's a few of the docks but one in particular has a load of ships in there, goes to show how important the docks was to Limerick at the time.

You are right there - you can see the Jehovahs hall there in the right of the picture

One can see a lot in that photo, like the former Keanes Bakery (yellow walled factory), the Trade Electric below it is still there, the Gaeltacht Dry Cleaners below it again is gone, the former City Dispensary (Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses) is where you got your polio vaccination in the 60's.

Christ they nearly lost half of John's Square to dereliction back then. The buildings where Dr Griffin, Mr. Bin Man and Dr. Scanlan are today had no roofs. I think the Corporation just caught them in time.

The houses on Brennans Row were on their last legs (incidently my great-great-grandparents reared their family there in the 1870s). Would love to see an up to date photo from the same vantage point.

Fantastic shots, just spotted the gallery on Facebook and was going to post it here.

City Center looked far busier back then than it does now. :P The picture overlooking Sarsfield Bridge and Arthurs quay is excellent.

    Great pictures thanks for sharing.

Sorry to go slightly off topic but would anyone have a picture of the pub "The Hogan Stand"? It used to be part of the complex that is now Arthurs Quay. A relation of mine owned it, I've never seen it.

I never knew they played soccer in the old dog track. Who was using it?

The Markets Field was once the home of Limerick FC.

The hogan stand was on Patrick Street? Grew up beside it.

These pics bring back some memories.

    Thanks OP.

    5646838456_ffec64cbc2_o.jpg

Not only did Limerick FC play there, the Market's Field was a true sports venue.

The GAA started to play there in 1888.

Munster played the All Blacks there in 1906 and it was also the home for the then local Garryowen rugby team before they absconded to Dooradoyle in the 1960's.

The rugby goal posts can be clearly seen in the photo below.

This city needs a museum and gallery dedicated just to itself.

Imagine if someone could co-ordinate an exhibition of the best of
"Limerick: A Stroll Down Memory Lane"; The Old Limerick Journal; Limerick's Life; the Leader/Chronicle archives; the Gerry Andrews photographs; the Milk Market; the Hunt Museum; the LCGA; the castle; the Kemmy Museum; the Granary; Lissanalta House; UL, LIT, Mary I; the churches and cathedrals; the schools; the soccer/rugby/GAA/athletics/rowing clubs; Scouts and Guides lodges; parish newsletters; websites; event posters; pubs; hotels...

Indeed there was a lot of work there at one point. Ironically the docks probably handles more tonnage each day today then in the 60's and 70's, except the ships and cranes are much bigger, so loading and unloading is much more efficient, and stuff like oil is just pumped straight to tanks, so very little labour content at all.

Does anybody have any pictures or links to pictures of Upper Gerald Griffin Street?

    Around the Rashers Pub area.

I stayed in the pier last night (got a deal cheaper than the fuel cost to NCW and back) and my room window was facing the old dunnes and they have a phone box outside it. I was actually stumped to see it. Couldn't stop looking at it. Must be one of very few left in town.

I don't think it's the NCR area because the Condell Road isn't right and the area of the river across from it would be a lot more built up than that.

Yeah we couldnt figure out because the pier is there and also the oil tanks are pretty close which would give it a good fit however like you said the condell road isnt right or even possibly built yet. Plus there seems to be a river in the top center. Mightnt even be Limerick, but got it from a Limerick photographer's page

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 207 ✭✭BlueDrax

It is the NCR - Image is flipped.

Villiers School hockey pitch with Barrington's Pier in the background.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,015 ✭✭✭✭Mc Love

You sure? The other side of the river should be more developed though if it is! And there's that river in the top center

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 207 ✭✭BlueDrax

    Yep!

Load the picture into MS Paint and "Flip Horizontal".

Taken in the late 80's is my guess.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,142 ✭✭✭✭banie01

Is the river in the Background the Ballynaclough?
The river the Dock Road is bridged over near Dennehy's?
If I remember correctly that was drained/diverted during the construction/expansion of the industrial parks out that way

I dont recall there being a river where that one in the top center of the picture is though

As a Bluedrax said the image is flipped, so the river that you don't recall is actually to the right of Barringtons pier in the corrected view.
There are fairly extensive wetlands on the South Bank of the Shannon and a lot of land was reclaimed and altered between the mid 80's and now which would alter the layout of the water features somewhat.

I'm fairly sure it is the Ballynaclough river, anyone using the Dock Road would drive over it, it is bridged between Mike O'Dwyer Motors and the Dock Rd business park.
I've attached a link to the Ordnance Survey Ireland map of the approximate location.
If you flip the image, both the river and the inlets on the left side of the uncorrected image are shown on the map

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,015 ✭✭✭✭Mc Love

Still not convinced lads :D Even if you flip it, the tanks appear to the right and the river in the photo to the left of the pier, which it should be going by the osi map to the left of the pier and the tanks more or less directly across.

Was asking for that wasnt i!

Looking at the flipped image, how do they do that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,871 ✭✭✭Poxyshamrock

Given that the Condell Road is there, it has to be at least the late 80s/early 90s
