Thanks Ste, you know I was thinking to myself today that maybe I'd be better off just getting a couple of short runs in this week and forgetting the long run just in case what you describe above happens.

Might be better to just write off this week and not risk being injured again next week. As you say 12 weeks left so plenty of time to get back to where I want to be. Hmmmm...food for thought

Hey RR looks like we're both having a 'rest' week...I'm confident we'll be better for it and ready to attack a solid 12 weeks, better now than further down the line...best of luck :D

    Saturday 3rd August

Leg feeling a lot better today. Still a sore spot where it seems to be bruised and tender but otherwise felt good enough for me to chance a nice easy short run today. Did 20 mins easy on the exercise bike first to warm up the legs and then some stretching of main muscle groups before trotting out nervously for first run since last Sunday to see how it felt.

Overall I'm happy with how the run went and believe I can ease myself back into the plan now next week with a few more easy runs to start off with.

    2.56mi @9:00

    3.61mi easy @8:57

    Avg HR: 127
    Max HR: 142

had to stop a couple of times during run to stretch out hamstring. Injury was beginning to niggle a bit again:mad:

Going to have to watch this carefully over next couple of days . Might just run one day on one day off this week and just easy runs until I'm 100% happy it's back to normal.

I know what you mean. I did slow it down but I think the pace is a result of having very fresh legs after a week off. Apart from the niggle the run was taking nothing out of me at all.

    Monday 5th August

Not running today. Instead did 20 mins/10K on bike plus 20 mins pilates exercise by instructional DVD.

Will do some stretching later on.

How did you get the injury? Seems to always to come back when you are hitting a quick pace

Hey Darren, I've a long history of lower back/hamstring injuries even going back to my football days. On this occasion I was just doing an easy run and felt a pain behind the knee and I suspect a grade I tear of hamstring. Maybe the recent increase in mileage perhaps, I just don't know. I do need to incorporate more core work and stretching into my schedule so that is what I will do next.

Are you using Voltarol at all? Im using it for my knee and its actually fantastic. I have a bit of inflammation and twinging at the moment and its a god send.

I had been alright then the tube ran out, so was taking some ibuprofen. Hot water bottle strategically placed right now and will invest in a new tube tomorrow. Ive used it before for my back and found it good too. Thanks for the tip. You can also get a cheaper version called Diclac but couldnt say for sure which is better.

Hey Runchick, thanks. Hope you are over the worst yourself and easing back into it.

Re physio- I'm at the cusp of recovery so don't think physio needed at this juncture and anyway I don't have the money until payday. I know this injury well and am confident I'll be back soon. If it does recur though and I don't get back properly this week i will defo see a physio as otherwise I think my DCM plan is in real jeopardy:eek:

I won't run again today as I am swamped in work now (he says as he responds to a Boards post:rolleyes:) and will have to work late but maybe that will be a blessing in disguise and an extra days rest will be good for me.
Tube of voltarol purchased today in lieu of physio:)

    Wednesday 7th August

Plan tonight was to jog up to club , see how the leg was and then head out with Meet&Train group for a short slowish run. Leg was feeling better but needed to test it without stressing it if you know what I mean.

So jogged up to club and this basically constituted a warm up for me. Took it really slow on purpose . Leg felt a little tight to begin with but it slowly loosened up and managed to get to the club without any trouble. Was only one girl there tonight and she was planning 7 miles so decided would start out with her and then scoot off and make a short route home for myself so that is what I did. Again kept it very slow, even slower than LSR pace and was really enjoying the fact that I was running pain free. There is light at the end of the tunnel it seems. Will see how it feels tomorrow before deciding what I will do running wise tomorrow. Feeling more positive about it now though than before the run.

    So tonight I managed a 1.88mi warmup @10:02

    Avg HR:121
    Max HR: 132

    followed by

    4mi v.easy @9:47

    Avg HR: 124
    Max HR: 135

good to see you back at it. It's an absolute head-wreck when you can't run. Very frustrating. I was out a few times last year and found it very hard to handle. Error on the side of caution at the moment and i'll see you at the start line of DCM! Albeit a long way behind you:D

Thanks Ososlo.Yes very frustrating. It was about the same time last year when I got injured and missed three weeks that time.Hopefully no repeat of that this time or I'll have to review target methinks.

Look forward to meeting you at the start line and/or McGrattans afterwards for the celebrations with the Boards crew:)

You're flying at the moment so I'll be expecting big things from you come October;)

easy run really really really easy and hard ones very hard. That's what's working for me this year compared to last when i ran everything at medium pace. i might be running a lot but it's all sub 75% of max heart rate so not taxing on my body at all. It's the key for me. Whether it'll translate to a good marathon time or not is yet to be seen;)
Yes it'd be nice to meet some real-life boardsies finally! I've been thinking about your club too but I think I'll wait until after DCM. Club runners still scare me!

Do come to RR's club! We are not scary! (RR will confirm that). We are also possibly a bit less structured at the non-elite levels than would suit some people, but everyone is v friendly and encouraging, and you do find your group / level.

You should come to a race some Tuesday night (8pm start, 7 euro, 2 miles, tea & biscuits after) - you could race, or if you didn't want to you could just watch, but the tea and biccies after is a great way to meet people and you could chat to people about coming down to run. Every Tuesday night from now till about 12 Sep. You'd be v welcome.
